The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I use both and have not noticed a lot of difference in terms of lag time, service, customer service, etc...

Personally, though, I like using cPanel so for that reason alone, I would pick Blue Host.

cPanel IS fantastic for a layman like myself.

However, I was with BlueHost for just under a year and in that time I got DDoS attacked.

They weren't set up to handle it at the time (a couple years ago) so when I called tech support to find out why my website had gone down, they seemed to be going nuts and were incredibly rude.

Had to actually call back a few times to get an idea of what was happening and what I could do - only got the info when the lead guy got on and said quite angrily that I was, quote, "bothering" his "guys".

(Keeping in mind I had no idea why my site was down at that point, why I was locked out of the aforementioned cPanel and everything else, or why I'd recieved an e-mail about my account being cancelled.)

The woman I spoke to about the cancellation of my account (they passed me off to a scripted "divorce" specialist of some sort) she just continually tried to steamroll me, rattling off the pre-written information despite my constant injections of "Excuse me... Excuse me... EXCUSE ME..."

Finally got a word in edgewise and managed to convince her to actually tell me how to get my files off their machine.

Then when I asked why they penalized ME for someone else DDoSing my site, she said, exact quote, "Well WE don't know why they attacked you!"

In other words, maybe I deserved it - how should they know?

A while later I went to their forum to post about my experience and found I'd been pre-emptively banned from posting, presumably back when they realized I was mad about the ordeal.

Years later, I found some private Bluehost tech support chat logs on a tech support employee's blog where she openly made fun of customers.

It had personally identifiable information, including my name. I contacted BlueHost about it (her site was hosted with them, naturally) but they wouldn't do anything about it - supposedly because my name had initials and my last name.

Keeping in mind that "L.L. Lastname" combined with my domain name mentioned in the log identified exactly who I was.

After BlueHost told the employee about my request for removal, she added more instances of my name and invented interesting pieces of the story in order to make herself seem like a victim.

It's still up as far as I know.

So... er... I wouldn't recommend BlueHost.

:)

I was using godaddy hostings about 4 years ago and i will tell you my experience with them was horrible so far. I purchased a dedicated box there everything was good except when you dealings with some issues. The online support not even responded with handwritten text they allways copied and pasted some long bullshits and never ever received any little help from them. Was so happy when i have decided to move my websites from them and never looked back.
Sorry but I dont recommened them at all.

bluehost is better then godaddy, they are cheap and reliable as well, beside this they offer customer support and anytime money back guarantee.

Bluehost had a lot of down-time when I used them and I was shifted between servers (or whatever you'd call it) a couple times. Keeping in mind I was with them for under a year.

Their customer support was okay, nothing to write home about, and as mentioned above you can expect no reaction if any of their staff share your tech support logs publically on the web with crude comments about your intellect. (Or even if one of your users contacts them to ask why the site is down.)

I don't know what the money-back guarantee is about, but I did recieve a pro-rated amount for the small amount of time left in the year after they deleted my account because I was attacked.

My advice? Do not use Bluehost.

If they were leasing you a storefront, they'd kick you out for being burglarized (once) and stand on the roof shouting your transaction data to everyone below.

Go with Bluehost. I've read that Godaddy hosting is very slow and there are always sporadic downtime. Just use Godaddy to register you domain.

I'm not very familiar with Blue Host but I know that Go Daddy's hosting service does not typically get very good reviews

Find a third hosting option.

There are plenty out there.

I can't stress enough that Bluehost lets tech support employees post your unedited tech support chat logs online with your name and domain in order to make fun.

That's more ethically and logically flawed than the majorty of complaints about GoDaddy.

I agree with motorhed, don't limit your selection process to just these two hosts.

Also, know your requirements first. Are you looking for the standard shared hosting, or something more?

I'd use Bluehost for the hosting and get the domain from Godaddy. I never buy my domain from a hosting service.

I would say GoDaddy I don't use their service, but my friend does. Prices are affordable, and customer support is always there to help. I remember that he had a typical beginner problem, he purchased wrong package I mean server with wrong OS, they where there all the time they solved the problem in less than 2 hours and switched his package from Windows to Linux server. :)

Bluehost is cool if you're willing to risk the loss of privacy, service, and respect.

I am sure that it will be reasonable to contact them both, tell your specific requirements and see what they can offer you. then, make your final decision.

Why do you want to have a deal with one of these companies, the OP?

I am transferring my domains out of GoDaddy to BlueHost, but @motorhed, I will definitely keep that in mind when dealing with customer support. @David, I do recommend looking into other hosting companies after seeing motorhed's responses. However, BlueHost seems to be a good fit for me and my hosting needs.

It's a personal choice, to be sure. I'd begrudge nobody reading this for going with Bluehost if they want to.

I just find it odd (speaking generally) that so few people I've mentioned this to care about tech support logs being posted online.

In my reading I saw people's full names along with their domains. Since they were of course customers of Bluehost, all this tech support weirdo would have to have done is accidentally (or purposefully) leave in a pass or secret answer given by the customer and it's a domain thief's dream.

David is gone, he hasn't been here in 2 months.

What was said above, you should never get your hosting where you get your domains.

As far as shared hosting HostGator is clearly the best, can show you polls from people who have lots of sites.

What's funny is I think HostGator and BlueHost are under the same umbrella, no? :D

Nope. Bluehost and Hostmonster are.

As for Godaddy vs Bluehost, I'd say the optimum choice is neither. But if you really had to choose one, the choice would probably be Bluehost. Godaddy's been slow all the time in my experience.

I feel bluehost is better. It provides more support.

I had used Godaddy for more than 2 years. I have a forum is I host for my friend and it's a none profit. When we couldn't use shared hosting anymore everywhere only Godaddy shared hosting account did save us. We had a forum with 100-200 active members (daily) hosted at their lowest shared hosting package and had pretty much hassle free time there.

There are only few downsides I have noticed. They don't have Cpanel and their control pannel is bit slow and take time to get used to. Their support is okey but don't except them to babysit you (if you are a newbie).

I don't remember having a downtime with them either.
