"none had a chance to contest the request until after it was approved and the names had been seized."

The first nail in the coffin of .com & .net domain extensions.

The process of forced geographical indexing was started a long time ago by Google.
We will see the use of ccTld domains come to the fore with Google charging a premium to businesses who want to advertise worldwide, and have their sites displayed in the countries they are prepared to pay for.

Google and Facebook need bringing down a peg or two.

Its all about the money, money, money.
Kerching.

Hard to defend the situation when none of the owners of these domains will openly do it. If they felt this was an injustice by the U.S. Courts then they should have hired a lawyer to defend their position.

But I am worried about the internet being seized by the U.S.. There needs to be some form of treaty or agreement over the issue. Some form of international court to deal with issues. Oh wait..that's right we have WIPO who are useless because U.S. Courts can do whatever they like when it comes to CNO.

Oh well.

Internet started as a Dept of Defense project in the USA. It should remain under US control. No seizure necessary, it's already here under DoC control. It can all be shut down with the flip of a switch in Marina Del Rey, California. You want a treaty with Botswana or Ghana? Haha!

We were first to land on the moon too. Should we claim ownership?

And I'm well aware of the interwebs history.

Companies are already devising ways around that. I have a feeling when we are forced to go ipv6 you'll see a real change for that. 10-15 years is likely that DNS will not be centralized any more and root servers will be globalized.

And sorry but turning off the USC-ISI zone servers would not shut the internet down.
