The Government of Montenegro recognized the potential worldwide appeal that .ME could have and decided it should be operated as a generic name space to gain the maximum benefit for Montenegro. The Government issued a public RFP in November 2007. The goal of the RFP was to find a Registration Agent that could operate an international registry, provide world class backend registry services, and provide the marketing and promotional muscle needed to make .ME a worldwide success. Ultimately, we believe they made an excellent choice!

The contract was awarded to doMEn, d.o.o., a Montenegro based joint venture (doing business as .ME Registry) whose partners are Afilias Limited, GoDaddy.com, Inc., and ME-net d.o.o.

Landrush will start June 6 till June 26, domain names with more than 2 applications will go into Auction.

Go Live on July 17.

SO, what do you all think about the coming .me?

Namepros, hopefully I'm allowed to link to the blog confirming the sale.

thedomains.com/2011/11/10/mostwanteddomains-com-brokers-the-sale-of-meet-me-for-a-world-record-price-of-450000

"I’m proud to announce that MostWantedDomains.com has successfully brokered the sale of the domain name Meet.Me for $450,000 in what we believe is a world record price for a .Me domain name.

The Domain was jointly owned by My company, Worldwide Media, Inc., Rick Schwartz and Ammar Kubba.

The domain name was acquired at the silent portion of a TRAFFIC auction for $5,890 back just over three years ago.

The domain will become the 7th highest sale of the year on DnJournal.com YTD chart and the 3rd highest non-.com sale of the year."

$5,890 ----> $450,000. Nice. And that would be the biggest .me sale to date.

I don't fully agree with that statement:
3. The bar has been raised on .Me domain name values, especially the domains with verbs, call to action type of domains as well as other bang on domain in other right of the dot extensions other than .com.

....

Of course it also raises the value of .Me domains owned by a lot of domain investors.
450K is an enormous amount of money, even for a premium .com.
Because the sale is exceptional, I don't think it will do a lot to boost the value of .me portfolios. You can ask what you want for your domains but few people are willing to pay that much for a domain or even have that kind of budget.
The bar is not the baseline.

There are very few domains of the same caliber in .me and I doubt they will sell in the same range in the near future.

That goes for other extensions too. .ly is what it is, in spite of one domain reportedly being sold for 100K.

Delicious.com has d.me now.

According to Delicious itself, its pretty simple but should have quite an impact on the future development of their service. First of all, the new, shorter domain name will let you visit Delicious just by typing in d.me: four characters, no more, no less.

This is very true. A few years ago, any 'reasonable' single word .com was worth good money. Now, all but the best are loosing their perceived value, probably because of the demize of domain name parking but also because the web is becoming a more personal and social medium. I believe that this is where .me domains can gain some ground. A decent hack or call to action .me is catchy and more importantly memorable. Combine these attributes with a good site, with a true purpose, and someone willing to invest and you are on a winner.
Any one of us could have a domain with huge potential value, but no one will recognize that value until all these elements come together. Another thing to remember is marketing. If you were the owner of meet .me, do you honestly believe that you could have got $450,000 for it?
I think the majority would have got what this consortium paid for it.
Still, this can only be good news for .me

Figured it might be a merchant that won it in the auction. They have it forwarded to the main site.

starting to think that .me is going to have bigger legs than .co! who knows in this business...but its great to see people buying in to .Me

I've had my cashloan.me site going for some time now and although its a very competitive area online it is slowly climbing google rank.

"starting to think that .me is going to have bigger legs than .co!"

Oh, it's easily better. They don't have that confusion problem .co will always have and I see more development in .me.

.me is a great extension, I own a couple too. However, to say that it will have more legs than .co or .tv, that's a bit wishful thinking. .me has very limited application. Nouns, generally don't sound very good with it.

OutdoorToilets.me

Ya see? .co, on the other hand looks good in almost any case by virtue of the "company" angle.

.me goes super well with a lot of verbs but is limited to that.

It's not wishful thinking, it's common sense.

.tv is very limited because there is an expectation of video/something you might see on tv, etc.

.co is limited because it will never get past the confusion part with .co. The one everybody got excited about, Overstock, pretty much verified that.

More development is happening in .me. You can simply take a look at tech sites, Google news on new site launches etc.

SEO wise, .me is easier to get links than .co. Gave you the reason in the other thread.

You can just go reread the .co thread where many more issues have been pointed out.
