Rumor: Microsoft To Buy Nokia For $30 Billion

I wouldn't be surprised, not after their purchase of Skype, that's the software, Nokia would be the hardware.

Lots of synergies between the three companies as well.

I wish Nokia had taken the android route. It would have bought better smart phones at better prices.

Microsoft does seem to be on a spending spree as of late. If this is confirmed it would be huge news right now we can only wait and see. I do think that Microsoft does have some big plans, because there making some huge investment and that doesn't come without plans.

If this true, It could be great competition between the 'giants' in mobile device.. microsoft vs G.Android vs iPhone lets' see..

Microsoft will allways be king of the hill

Seems they have preferred "cheaper" skype, what is also significant in the infoprmation world.

This has been talked about since Microsoft chose Nokia to build their handsets a few months ago. And Nokia's CEO has already said that they would consider selling to Microsoft in the future, and that they've been talking about it.

Not sure how reliable that Russian blogger is, but I may have to pick up some of Nokia's stock next week

But I find it hard to believe that it is true seeing as how they just announced the Skype purchase. If they buy Nokia now they'd be swimming in debt.

There is no way NOK would sell for $30B, that is less than their current market cap now. The handset business is very low margin for these companies currently, and NOK has fallen out of favor. MSFT has $50B in cash, so that is debt they can assume, not to sure they would want to invest their money into something like this, NOK has had many buyout rumors, but the price has continued to fall, MSFT would have to offer a 20% premium to get a sale done, which would be closer to $40B.

Then all phones will show bing.com as search engine, do you believe me? I see their future. Then new phones will be released called "skykia", or "nope".

M$ would only need to come up with enough cash to buy 'controlling interest', not all the stock, so might be closer to $20B.

Also, NOK might be out of favour, but that's primarily due to the lack of hardware / software development, something M$ is ready / willing / able to provide.

Will it actually happen? Who knows and unless M$ sees huge margins in terms of savings, probably not.

Technically Microsoft could offer any amount to Nokia as long as its above current market price for their stock.

With the valuation at $11Bn now and the fact that both meego and symbian are being abandoned in favour of the windows phone os, the acquisition might just start making numerical sense.

Will they, won't they, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Their Operating Systems are crap. 7 is the only usable OS they've sold since DOS, imho.

And don't even get me started on Internet Explorer, quite frankly the worst of all the browsers from the supposed king of the hill??!

They seriously need to consider spending some of their money to update their existing products to 2011 standards rather than constantly retrograding to 1995 and earlier.

Anyways, getting back on topic I can only suppose that Microsoft is doing the same tactic that it has always done, come late to the party and trying to bully everyone into leaving; they are doing nothing but trying to pick up an old rivalry with Apple by taking over one of the biggest mobile phones manufacturers if the rumours are true.

I seriously doubt they will ever topple Apple though, where they are sleek and sexy and have thousands of people developing their applications Microsoft fare will end up costing a fortune for not much of anything.
