How to do a transfer to name.com?

In the years I've been domaining, I've never before had to transfer a domain. Sounds odd maybe but that happens when you only register for your own use rather than for frequent reselling.

So I got a domain I'd like to transfer. How does this work? Is it just like adding a new domain to the cart, typing the domain as if it never existed yet, and then when the site says it already exists typing the code to transfer? Or is it a different option alltogether?

PS: I own the domain myself, it's just transfering to another registrar but not a domain buying from someone else. I already own it, just need to change registrar :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
1. Unlock the domain at the current registrar
2. Go to Name.com, choose transfer, and pay for your domain. It's similar to adding a new domain to the cart.
3. Get the EPP code from the current registrar and enter it at name.com.
4. Transfer proceeds.

How long more or less does a transfer of a .com domain take?
This process of transfering a domain to name.com does by no means affect any other domains already in my Name account?

Why transfer to shady registrar Name.com? I would reconsider. If your name expires and they like it, they keep it for themselves.

I'd do GoDaddy before Name.com, anyday. They won't even admit to the acts that go on every damn day! 'We'll research the problem' for weeks and never get back to you.

It could take up to 5 days if your current registrar doesn't have an expedite feature exposed in their control panel (which name.com doesn't so they keep your name for the full 5 days if you wish to leave them, unless you get in touch with their support)

It can take up to 5 days to transfer the domain. Transferring from Godaddy is often quicker, I can transfer from Godaddy and have it at the new registrar within an hour.

Transferring a domain to Name.com will not affect your other domains at name.com. Just like registering a new domain.

Godaddy is WAY worse than name.com.

Godaddy is WAY worse than name.com.

Normally I'd agree, but GoDaddy is a far more respectable company regardless of all the BS they do... which means... imagine Name.com.

They give you the run-around for weeks and in the end tell you 'they can't do anything' after keeping your domain and request $18K for it as 'they don't own it, and someone else does'. If an internal customer support won't tell you what's going on (when it's extremely clear what it is), who the hell is?

I'd pick GoDaddy anyday. Hell, I'd choose RegisterFly over Name.com.

I recently did a transfer out in 5 minutes after a sedo sale.
1. start the transfer elsewhere
2. login to godaddy and go to domain manager (click "my account" on top menu, then "domain manager" on left menu).
2. Inside domain manager hover over the top menu item "domains" and click "pending transfers" and accept the transfer.

In my opinion, Name.com are an excellent customer focused registrar. Their support is good as well. If they don't own the domain, there isn't anything they can do about it. You shouldn't let your domains expire at any registrar.

I definitely understand what you mean by don't let them expire, but... which would you prefer? Expire and go pendingdelete or expire and have the registrar pick up the domain and try to sell it back to you for more than your cars worth?

When you have many domains (thousands) sometimes it's inevitable...

Shady business practices is the way I look at it.

I thought you said they don't own the domain?

Why name.com? First of all, except for one, I have my other domains at name.com so having them all in one place is handy. Also, I've been with Name (and previously Domainsite which is basically an identical twin) for several years and never had any issue. Their control panel is very user friendly, and so far I found their support to be fast and reliable.

I had bad experiences with GoDaddy. People all tell me Namecheap is great, but haven't tried them as yet.

I guess occasional bad experiences happen with EVERY registrar ; however, if a registrar has a large customer base, ICANN accreditation and stays succesful for years ... it usually indicates the majority of customers are satisfied.

Now in regards to the domain transfer to Name.com: once the domain has been transfered into my account, do I need to do anything to activate it (and if so, how much time is there for it?) or is this just like registering a new domain where it just appears in your account and that's it?

What I did so far was paying the registration fee at Name.com, then enter the alphanumeric transfer authorisation from the previous registrar, received a message asking to confirm if i wanted to transfer to Name.com and obviously pressed the confirm option.

Is my part of the job done now, or do I need to do anything else to activate the domain once it arrives in my Name.com account?

Name.com is a good registrar. So is Namecheap.

Once the transfer is done, the domain will show up in your account, just like if you did a brand new registration. Your part of the registration sounds like it's completed, only thing left to do is wait for it to show up in your account.

You might want to checkout the nameservers, contact details, auto renewal are all to your liking. They should be as defined in your account. But it does no harm to check them, just in case.
