The Official .ws thread

.WS can stand for WEBSITE.

It has pros and cons as a domain. This thread is for people who wish to suggest ideas to build up and help promote the .ws domain as well as to give and receive help and advice on .ws domains in general. Some useful info contributed through this thread below. Views and comments anyone...

The registry is now allowing .WS domain names to be transferred from registrar to registrar. It seems that most registrars just haven't updated their websites to allow this yet.

This is good news for the .ws market as this was a major factor in holding .ws back. Time for .ws to take off? Can we publicize this to help boost the market?

So why buy .ws?
1. Excellent keywords can still be regged.
2. You can buy premium keywords for $20-$50.
3. Excellent development potential, luckily goog doesn’t really care about which extension the site is on but how much content s there and how often it is updated.
4. Godaddy markets .ws - little but its a big brand
5. The ‘website’ christening seems to have more and more acceptance.
6. Its easy to get traffic and thus revenue for better keywords in .ws than a ‘bad’ keyword in .com

I dont know which one was sold for the most, but i saw many mid $xxx sales of .ws names. I sold a few for low $xxx each, and they were not some turbo premium domains, but not bad either.

.ws is an orphaned extension with very little worth at all...last week I saw moped.ws expiring and falling off the bottom of godaddy closeouts, that should tell you something.

As for the most expensive, xcite.ws is the most I have found using namebio.com which got a price of $3605

Have had several reseller offers in the high $$ to low $$$ for most of them just in the past 6 months. Wasn't ready to part with at the time with those offers. Considering now.

I'd start accepting those offers. I have a couple hundred top keyword .ws that I am struggling to sell. It was less than a year ago in November that I sold pain.ws for $517 but not much action since them. I have some great names and am having to decide if I will renew or not.

Your views about .ws domains with very high exact kw volume as well as high cpc

I found few good names where almost all common extensions are taken. They are popular products and do not constitute trademark problems.

Exact search count as per google adwords is more than 100k in USA and more than 150K globally. Consistent trends throughout 12 months with bumps in December.

Only available extension is .ws

What are your views and experience with this extension ? Should I register them or stay away? People who registered .ws domains please share your expertise.

I would stay away from .ws. I had couple of very good keywords (door, forecast etc) I bought at expireing auctions, but wasnt able to sell them for more then mid $XX each (I was advertising them on all domain forums, endusers etc.).

It really depend on your goals and objectives.

I tend to seek names out that have unlimited potential to the upside from a development standpoint and from an end-user sale standpoint. In order to stay within these parameters, I now limit my purchases to strictly .COM and .ORG names.

If you have similar goals, I would suggest you steer clear of .WS domains. IMO.

There is not much value in .ws names. The .ws name was to stand for "Website" but it is the country code for Western Samoa.

The names are also sold by Global Domains International as part of a MLM or Network Marketing scheme that has damaged the credibility of the extension.

Unless you can get good generic names for a very low price to develop I would not register them. Prices for .ws names are very low if you try to resell them.

I have sold a WS name two months ago for $ 300.

But I agree that the market is limited: for most of my WS names, I have not received a single purchase inquiry. Still, I think that some will sell. They are all keywords. And some have traffic - a few of them pay enough for renewal fees through simple parking.

When I see an opportunity with an enduser, I explain that he/she an opportunity to buy a keyword at a low price, with a (pseudo) global TLD (=website).
