are the any tools/services out there which offer such ?

Thanks

I offer this service for free on my website. You can find it under domain monitoring section on namecatch.com. It monitors both pending delete and pre-release auctions. You can add a domain that has already expired or that you suspect it might expire in the future.

I recorded a youtube video that compares the two monitoring services. You can watch it HERE.

Whois based monitoring services won't work for redemption period (pre-release auction) domains which is the first and more important auction. They will not even recognise an expired domain as expired before it's too late and the first auction is over.

The reason is because domains that expire are auto renewed for one more year and when you check whois during the first 45 days after expiry the domain will show as renewed although it is actually expired and auctioned at that time. The pre-release auction happens between day 24 and 42 after expiry.

I suggest to pick a few domains that are about to expire and add them to different monitoring services and see which one is better. Except domaintools there is also godaddy domain monitoring which is also free for up to 100 domains.
