Actually I think this is legit. Have you heard of the recent (crappy) phenomenon sweeping the internet called ChatRoullette? It gets 20,000+ uniqes at a single time. CamRoulette is in many ways a more better name and it seems someone coughed up a lot of money for this. A lot of other tlds are taken now too.

CamRoulette was reportedly getting 700 uniques a day earning $10-15.

Just a fad that will fade away imo.

As DomainManDave, I am inclined to think it is a legitimate sale. This is not the first time a phenomenon like this occurs. We all know the domain industry exhibits a great deal of unpredictability. In addition to the ChatRoulette and CamRoulette phenomenon, there is what I call Factor X, which is no more than the willingness and financial capability of an end-user to get hold of a domain. In an interesting note, many combinations of _____roulette are being suddenly registered. The blank before roulette can be substituted with Text, Texting, Domain, etc. The very sale of CamRoulette.com has created another phenomenon.

I highly doubt anyone here is going to believe me and I don't know why I want to embarrass myself like this when I've posted on another forum claiming it wouldn't be mentioned outside, but I hand-registered CamRoulette.com @ Dynadot on December 12th, the day I heard about ChatRoulette. My original idea was to recreate a clone site, but that fell off. Months passed and nothing happened. On the same day I received about 3 offers for the domain, ranging from $400-$1200. I talked a bid up to $1400 and I sold the domain. A month later the guy I sold it to sold that domain for $151,000. That's going to be a life lesson.

I'm a 20 year-old affiliate marketer and that was my first dabble in the domain game. I had no idea something like that could happen and it is extremely hurtful and depressing to look back on it, I thought nothing could have really come of the domain. That's an amazing sale by Adam and although I do regret this more than almost anything in my life, it gives me a little bit of hope.

That is a major shame :(. but i suppose well done on having the hindsight to register it in the first place. I am sure many others would have also sold at $1400 so I wouldn't feel too embarrassed if I were you. I wouldn't call this a lesson but more of a "oh well these things happen" sort of moment. All I can say is better luck next time and all the best in the future.

Wow,
That really truly sucks.
Just try to think of it this way, Were you happy with a $1393.00 profit off of a hand reg on the day of your sale? If so, then don't look back.

I have seen this name all over the place chatroulette.com. I have no idea what it is. I'm gonna have to research it now just for kicks.

Hey, you're reading a post from a guy that sold Dell Computer stock off at 4 1/2 bucks a share, only to watch it immediately surge to 100 bucks, split, one hundred bucks, split, etc. I stopped keeping track once I realized the value, had I kept it, was over $260,000 .

The lesson I learned was not to make a decision off of one WSJ article, which suggested Dell was in trouble. The stock had doubled 2 weeks after I read the article and sold out.

It is truly hard to judge the absolute value of a domain, so many unknowns, and so many variables between buyers and sellers. But, you are on your way, no doubt about that. Find the new technologies, or hot topics and product niches, it's easier to flip.

It's a huge potential loss but a 4 figure turnaround on a hand-registered domain that ended up being my first ever sale made me very happy, up until a friend showed me that DM2 auction sale. The guy I sold it to, Adam, seems to be a very nice guy and he did a very good job of recognizing what was going on and it's not as if he swindled the domain out of me or anything, he's just an experienced guy from what I've seen.

The day I read the article about the sale I emailed him congratulating him and telling him I was shocked and amazed that anything like that could ever happen and he let me told me that he would like to discuss some things on the phone at some time about the sale, so things could look up for me, although that certainly isn't a requirement and I don't expect it of him.

However, very, very stupid move. Right after the sale the YouTube invasion began and CR videos are all over now, it's getting exposure on CNN, MSNBC, etc. I regret it but I'm trying not to be so hard on myself about it and I may get a little something out of it anyway.

Wao! That is an amazing story. The positive side of it for you is that that hand-registration shows you have vision or instinct when it comes to domain registration. I would have sold the domain as you did. No one could have really predicted this incredible outcome.

This is such an amazing story. Most of us would have done the same though i would have been a bit curious about the sudden inquiry for the domain just after reg but would have still given in on the offer. This is one more unpredictable domain sale story.

Yes it is an amazing story but I guess you need to be experienced a little if you get offers just like those.. I think thats one of the best ROI I have heard of in a while.. The dude must have known to offer $1400 or else no one really does. But I have learnt from my past mistakes as well if I just registred a domain and I am getting some decent offers then I would either hold on to the domain or research and see how far can I go with the offers... But Going from $8 to $151,000 is just something amazing.. Most people would not be able to do it.. Unless they really really know the value or future predictions of a domain.

If it helps, you could think of it this way:

I doubt the buyer offered $150K right off the bat.

Would you have been able to negotiate the end user up to $150,000 yourself, or would you have sold to them at $1400 as well?

If so, it was Adams negotiating skills that made it a $150,000 domain. You made all the profit you were going to make.

Just a thought!

I eat my words. Hyphen, this is how business works. Hopefully you translated the $1000 plus into a sound investment which will realize you more gains.

I've considered the situation this same way, who knows what I would have got for the domain had I waited a month but I think it's safe to say 5 figures was in reach. However, Adam has an amazing business sense for being able to find someone willing to pay $151,000 for that domain, I'm not an expert when it comes to these things but I can imagine that is NOT something that happens every other month.

I think I'm over it now and I'm glad I had the presence of mind to understand the potential of ChatRoulette when I originally registered camroulette.com. Onto the next one!

Congratulations to Adam for this amazing sale and congratulations to Hyphen for having the vision to spot a valuable domain faster than anybody else in the World.

Is Adam a NP member? Does he have a blog? It looks like there are lots of things we could learn from him.

I have read the ChatRoulette.com story at wikipedia. It is an amazing story. The site was build just a few months ago by a 17 year old boy. What amazes me is the fact that it was mentioned in so many major news channels in such a short time. I think if he didn't pick "Roulette" as the second name, the site would never become so popular. There is something funny and attractive to that name. For some reason it reminds me of westerns and duello.

Yeah, that kid is destined to be a millionaire for sure and he's been very humble about it, turning down lots of offers to appear publicly and such. He hasn't thrown a ridiculous amount of advertising on ChatRoulette either, I hope he is profiting nicely because I know the server pricing to host such a popular site streaming cams has to be a killer.

The only information I have about Adam is that he runs Ideal Hosting - web hosting and server solutions - looks like a decent place to get web hosting if you're interested. I'm sure he's very busy right now, though he did mention he would like to speak to me on the phone about the sale sometime.

At wikipedia it explains that the site works with flash which transfers data directly between two users and not over the website. It also says the site is hosted from a computer in his bedroom. I think the server load is minimal.

I believe the kid (creator) of chatroulette has meet with major VCs in Silicon Valley -- they like the platform -- more the random "next" idea -- which can be used for music, shows, dating, clips, etc

I regged a few roulette names for fun -- viewroulette.com, shareroulette.com, postroulette.com --- let's see if the "roulette" concept take off

per camroulette.com --- pretty amazing

I wouldn't. Even today after I have known about the ChatRoulette.com story, if I was the owner of CamRoulette.com I would still sell it for less than 2000 USD provided that this recent 151.000 sale didn't happen. Of course if it generates some park income I would multiply the monthly income by 60 and sell for that amount instead.

If I had 151.000 USD to spend on domain names I would buy top quality generic domains with stable park income. One year from now on and nobody can guarantee CamRoulette.com or ChatRoulette.com will still be remembered. You are spending all your money on a project that has the potential of success. CamRoulette.com doesn't have any generic value. It is a potential imitation of a currently popular website. The buyer could end up losing all his money. Of course if you have millions to try out some ideas then good luck to you.
