Anyone else registering 3D domains?

It seems that 3D is going to be the the next must have technology, according to the big brands, they are all launching 3D TVs.

I attempted to find good 3D names but the best domains are already taken, I think in 5 years time or even less, those generic 3D domains will be worth a lot. :imho:

Anyone else registering 3d domains? Do you think they have a future?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
At that stage it is all over. It isn't like registering Mp3.com before anyone knows what it is or picking up Spyware.com on a whim. The next lady next door knows about 3d now. It would appear thousands of 3d names have been registered, to the point where what is being registered sounds little better than random words stuck together.

The actual market for "3D" name is likely to be tiny. Look up every other trend are that has been huge, 3g, VOIP, smartphones, Dubai etc and see how many domains around those terms have actually sold. Companies don't need names starting or ending with 3d to take advantage of the techology. They will use their existing brands in the main. I personally think these trend names have a much lower success rate than domaining in established areas, and when the "wins" happen, they aren't big.

Take 3g.com for example, it has been a park page for 12 years. The best name in that whole overspeculated niche and it still has not found a home. It has been a huge technology but that doesn't mean endusers will be falling overthemselves even for the best names. If you own the best names you have a chance and can sell them to domainers if the ship doesn't come in. If you own the dregs and are registering after every tv show on the planet has done a special on the technology (like those in this thread) you are very likely to lose money.

The usual couse of events is that the names are dropped, as a domainer why even consider developing a name that is worth nothing?

I disagree you don't see 200 million dollar movies in 3G
Companies cannot do a 3d website with the exsisting site it won't work
Heck ToysRUS has 5 websites.

There will be 3D TV channels and with that will be 3D advertisement and with that 3D websites
I have someone already interested in plasticsurgery3D.com a huge potential there not tiny.

Thanks evirtual1, appreciate your comments, I think I will counter with a big xx,xxx and see what happens, if I get turned down, which Im sure I will, I am happy to hold onto it

I also got the plural (3DRecorders.com) so it would be nice to sell them as a pair anyway

giles, that strikes me as a good strategy. a lot of the names on this thread are highly speculative, at best, but 3d recorders are a solid bet. if i owned those two names, i wouldn't sell for xxx now unless i needed the money.

Just got:

3dReruns.com

Used the 99 Cent coupon at godaddy. :)

On the side note, advising people to completely stay away from a new technology and miss out on any potential future opportunities is wrong, at the same time encouraging people to jump in and register hundreds of domains without doing any research or having an understanding of the niche market is also wrong. So I recommend proceeding with caution when it comes to any new trend or technology, don’t stay completely away and don’t go overboard and remember that getting in on the trend at the right time is what makes all the difference while the top choice domains can still be found. IMO

Just received a low xxx offer on 3DRecorder.com, would you take the money and run?? Counter with high xxx, low x,xxx.....Thanks

It is something that at least has a chance of becoming a term used by consumers, would put in in a very different boat to the other names in this thread. Not sure if low 3 figures is fair or not, it seems to have pretty minimal usage at the moment. I would maybe try for very low 4 figures.

Agree, one of the better names from this thread. I would stick with this one for a while or counter with low/mid xxxx and see what happens.

4D domains are pointless as our eyes can't see in 4D...so these types of domains are not worth it.

wrong way if you must get both giftshop3d and 3Dgiftshop
remember goggle search would be gift shop in the search not 3D first
Companies will put the name first and 3D second IMO

ESPN just issued a PR its says ESPN 3D not 3D ESPN name first 3D second
That is called a 3D .com

Forget glasses to many glasses already out there

I have eyes3d thats the smallest glasses you can get

What do you all think names like this are worth, would they be the absolute premium names regarding 3D TV Channels??? What would you say the .COM is worth??

3DChannel (.) com
3DChannel (.) net
3DChannel (.) cctld

Try to google term "BANS".

How can you set up a 3D website with glasses required and not tell the consumer its a 3d website?
People will go see blurry images and leave.
The domain must say 3D

Maybe with putting "Browse this site in 3D" link on their regular web which redirects to 3d.company.com or company.com/3d ?

Exactly. Saying you can't have a 3D site without a 3D domain is like saying you can't have a mobile site without a .Mobi

It is not a necessity to have a 3D domain. The examples below work fine.

Brad

Maybe with putting "Browse this site in 3D" link on their regular web which redirects to 3d.company.com or company.com/3d ?

" It is not a necessity to have a 3D domain."

For company names you might be right, but for products that are well suited for the 3d technology having a domain that emphasizes on the 3d aspect of it can be an advantage, that’s why I got:

3dHomeTheater.US

Home Theater has around 500k exact searches (google keyword tool) and from what I have heard people spend a lot of money (as high as $100k) to have one at their home, so it’s logical to assume that a great number of people (if not all) might want to buy a 3d system or upgrade their existing one to the 3d version.
