Hello.

In view of the recent success of .ORG domain sales, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the value of the .org extension.

1. Share Recent .ORG Sales

2. Share Your BEST .ORG domains

3. Share Your Opinion on .ORG

---------- Post added at 04:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 AM ----------

Here are some other notable .org sales:

Engineering.org - $198,000
Date.org - sold for $150,000
Attorney.org - $38,500 sold @ SEDO on 9/25/2009
Hockey.org - $22,500 sold @ Moniker Traffic on 11/27/2009
HomeLoans.org - $37,000 sold @Private Sale on 08/19/2009

What's your best .ORG?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don't own any .orgs that I intend to sell. I am a .org buyer and a .org developer.

My best .orgs are some pure geos of cities.

I've shared my opinion on .org many times. .com is virtually always the best decision, however, .org is a TLD that 'makes sense' and occupies a permanent space in the minds of the public. I believe the .com instinct is severely overrated here in the year 2010, particularly as it pertains to using a .org. People know .org, people comprehend .org, people understand .org and .org even has a finite and desirable purpose that .com doesn't.

I like .org when the keywords aren't blatantly commercial (discountMP3players.org is just bizarre). Good rule of thumb; if you're selling products, .com is the trivially easy choice. Anything that involves gathering the attentions of people is well served by .org and in some cases, even preferable to .com.

In 2003, I hand-reg'd Americorps NCCC (dot) com (I am an alum of the programs). I neglected to register the .org at that time, since everything was "DOT COM OR DIE!!!!" Obviously, once I started 'getting' domain names, I severely regretted not getting the .org. It was owned by a rather tenacious possessor who refused to get rid of it (I wound up getting it this year when the guy FINALLY let it drop). But yeah. .org. Good stuff.

Kinda funny that there are domainers who still don't 'get it' on .org and subscribed to outdated TLD hierarchies where .net is always the preferable choice to .org... LOL @ them. The sale of poker.org means nothing here, either.

Pretty much agree with what Dongsman said above.
I have some pure geo ones too, like the first two in my sig:

Whitsunday Islands - a group of islands in sunny Queensland popular for holidays, diving, sailing etc
Lindeman Island - one of the Whitsunday group, home to Club Med's first Australian resort

hmm. i just went to sedo to see if i've ever sold an org there. nope. .net, .co.uk, .us, even a .at, yes. but no orgs. haven't sold any at snapnames, either. i know i've sold some on the boards - at least one product name comes to mind.

i probably should be more conscientious about how i use the extension. most of my .orgs were fairly early regs and i used the extension not because it made sense but because the .com and .net weren't available. nowadays, i gotta say that, except for the strongest of keywords, i rarely check to see if the .org is available.

It's funny how .ORG is perceived by most people as strictly non-profit, yet one of the biggest money industries invested in this extension.

For example (Loans*org) has developed their website into a lead-generation site for secured and unsecured loans. And that's probably what Poker*org is planning to do; to use this website as a secondary URL resource to bolster website traffic and increase consumer conversions.

In the long run, ORG is only as successful as we make it. I think that we must understand how to both develop and position this type of TLD for greater success.

Thanks,
David

.org has been my primary focus over the past couple years. Even with the Poker.org sale, I predict .org to remain highly underestimated by most of the domaining world. It conveys trust and authority more than even .com in some cases. Wikipedia running off of a .net wouldn't have people trusting it as a source of true and factual information, and the funny part of it is in many cases they are NOT as it's entirely user submitted (albeit moderated but stuff slips in often). People swear by that site as the definitive online encyclopedia, and that's the kind of effect .org can have.

I make a living selling .orgs, sell a lot of them on Sedo and forums, occasionally sell some to end users, and overall am happy with how .org has performed for me since I've put focus on it. I've never mustered more than $1,500 for a .com reg but have done that twice for .org reg's (SixDegrees.org and HomeBusinessOpportunities.org). Personally, my favorite .orgs that I have are sayings or phrases like PeaceOut.org, HelpVictims.org, LiveHappy.org, etc. and even some where usage may not be immediately understandable but they'd be catchy if used, i.e. OneMillionDollars.org (charity with mini-goals of one million dollars for certain causes) and OrganizeMe.org (for helping people start up organizations OR for helping people with self-help type info to sort out their own lives). I just like the extension and guess what? I've had non-profits buy domains from me on a number of occasions as well. They need their domain for an online presence too!

HomeBusinessOpportunities.org

Nice one!

I really like .org's and don't understand why so many domainers write them off as "non profit" -

Org = organization. There are all kinds of organizations - professional, medical, educational, financial, industrial, technical, promotional, hobbyists ... If the domain could conceivably be some kind of organization then a .org would fit.

A sales page or a real "in your face" bunch of ads probably wouldn't work well on a .org, but it's not difficult to monetize quality content.
