Magmahost acquired by Yomura Holdings

just got an email about Magmahost being acquired by Yomura Holdings.

I'll say it right now I'd like to see Andy post an update on what will be happening and if he'll still be involved. Lots of NP members moved to Magmahost when another company was sold so obviously some people might be worried and yes I'm one of them.

Thanks
db

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'm with you on this one. Joined them a week ago and just decided they were of a decent standard. Was gonna move my entire portfolio over tomorrow, then saw that email. Can we get some reassurace please. From past owner and present. I'm keen to hear what changes if any can be expected in terms of service and server performance seeing as a change was mentioned in the email.

Regards,
Gregory

Just heard about this, Yomura Holdings seem to have purchased a few hosts recently. Here's hoping that your stable hosting experience continues under the new ownership :)

The problem is, Yomura holdings seems to have no information about them anywhere...apart from this thread and the one at WHT.
Not sure if these guys are trustworthy/reliable, I never got the first email, can someone please post the contents of that email here?
Please clarify things Andy.

I too have received an email from Magma Hosting, only one came through but I logged into the client area where both emails can be viewed.

Here's the contents...

1st email
We are pleased to announce that Magmahost has today been acquired by Yomura Holdings.

Magmahost will continue as a seperate operation, but will have the immediate benefit of access to Yomura's datacentres and network.

If you have any outstanding issues that have not been attended to, would you bring it to the transition team's attention at [email protected]. Please include in the email the ticket number so we can look into it directly.

We will make further announcements over the coming week.

Regards
Giles Anderson

2nd email
Hi,

Following on from my email yesterday, I wanted to address the main bulk of the questions in a mail to everyone

1. Will prices remain the same?

Absolutely, we have absolutely no intention to change the pricing model at Magmahost. It works for you the customer and for us the service provider. There is no reason to change a good thing.

2. Are your sites safe?

Yes, we are experienced in operating hosting services and we are a cash positive company.

3. What changes will happen at Magmahost

Immediate changes will be the addition of servers at Yomura's datacentres. We expect this coming week in our Atlanta, San Jose and London datacentres. This will help eleviate the current loading on Magmahost's existing servers. You will be given the option to move your services to these other servers. However the existing servers will remain in place so you will not have to suddenly migrate to a new location.

We are working with our support staff to streamline and improve response times, whilst we want this to happen overnight, its not going to. We need to introduce a proper support infrastructure

We also want to hear your needs, if there is something missing or something doesn't work - tell us.

4. Do you have to change your Paypal, 2CO, Moneybookers subscription?

No, everything stays the same. Yomura has taken over the banking and merchant accounts of Magmahost. You dont need to make any changes

We'll update you as it happens, but in the interim if you want to contact the transition team please email them on [email protected]

Regards

Giles Anderson

I have done some research and found that Yomura Holdings has aquired several other hosts, I also found that Giles Anderson seems to be their main guy as he appears to be the main voice. I don't have any experience with this though so I can't comment further. Maybe a complete backup just to keep our minds at rest wouldn't go a miss. Hopefully all will be well!

Just to re-assure you, things will be staying the same but quality should improve such as server speeds and everything else, if you want to know anything more please e-mail them.

Andy does that mean that you are no longer working for/at magmahost? So if we had any concerns we could not contact you directly???

From what I understand Giles would be your main point of contact now.

I have seen fusedhosting issue, now worried about this.

I would not be worried. Its obviously a coporate venture to grow bigger and be more of a global player. Thats why hostnhub has good web exposure because we are a wing of Godaddy and use all the data bases they have. This gives domains better web exposure for those who understand web hosting and registries. Godaddy makes millions and other players want in on the action.

I would be worried about $1 hosting plans to begin with, regardless of who the owner is. I've seen countless "companies" come-and-go over the last 10 years, trying to survive on such a business model. It simply does not work. Not long-term. It might be a good thing for a short while, but it usually runs dry within 1-2 years.

Honestly, if the sites are important to you, I recommend spending a little more money. The peace of mind is worth the extra cost.

That's not to say some $1 host don't succeed, or that some 1-man hosts don't succeed. Some DO. But honestly, they are the exception, not the rule. So be careful. And back-up your data yourself. Don't rely on somebody else to do it.

Please don't take this as an insult towards anyone, because it's not intended that way. Good luck to the Magma customers. I can't say anything bad about the company or the owner, old or new. I'm just making a general statement and warning regarding these type of situations.

Very interesting - I just read a poor review on WHT about a magmahost client. How do you guys (mh clients) feel about the service? What about this acquisition?

I suppose that just another prove that not every one can be happy with the same company. As for me that is comonplace situation.

I think it's getting harder to tell a good host by its prices now a days. One thing that's slated alot is advertised "unlimited" as we all no there is no such thing as a hard drive that provides unlimited gigs of storage. Yet those who offer it seem to be unreliable. But...

Look at Host Gator. They now look a lot like one of these hosts with that they now offer unlimited bandwidth and web space on all their shared packages. Luckily they have a very good reputation and so can be trusted easily.

Its very hard for a single person to start up shop today because he has so much to compete with. A typical package I would say would include 1 gig of webspace and about 10 gig of bandwidth. A price of $5 seems reasonable I think. But the packages that offer more for less come across as way more attractive.

I think in the long one, new businesses will fail, and the only way to find a host is to trail through reviews first. Even then though, some reviews are fake!

I am a branch of a larger company (if not the biggest) with this [database ] behind me and more in the US and Europe I'm not really concerned suppliing anything my clients need. Some person running a few servers from home could never compete for web presence. If you can not beat the big boys you join them.

You should read up on when another Namepros member sold their hosting company (Fusedhosting) and many people moved over to Magma.

I'm with Magmahost, and Andy has been a great help, but the rest of Magmahost support staff have been..well...dissapointing.

Their replies often make no sense, are slow and just repeat themselves and give little/no relevant information.

They promised daily offsite backups, I asked for a backup and they say they didn't have one :(.

I'll stick with them though, unless Andy leaves, then I see no point.

Am I the only one who finds it a little creepy when the majority of people who respond in such topics are other hosts?

For customers of the old owners/host it's like being tossed off your boat into the water and finding yourself surrounded by sharks.

Heh... no disrespect intended. :p

Yeah, it's like they're waiting for us to look for a new host :P

New email today from Magmahost. Things seem like they are settling down a little. Reports say serveres were overloaded, explains the dissapointing speeds from my website.

Hopefully things will speed up!

Well they seem to have lost my site from there servers.... but had no problem billing me, even thought I could not log in to my cpanel or whm.

Now my site is completely down and it's been over 13 hours sense they said they were migrating me to a new server....

Why is it when I find a host with decent customer service and reliability they get sold to someone else and go to crap.???!!!
