Hey Everyone !

What mistakes you did when you enter the domaining industry ???

For all the newbies and the veteran's, please tell me your mistakes !

We can only learn from this...

Everybody made mistakes, Share it with us and don't let other newbies or people, to make the same mistakes.

I will start -

1. I did some cybersquatting when I just started, I registered a lot of trademarks and celebrity names.
Please consult a lawyer or find information about that issue, don't do the same mistakes i did.

Please put your mistakes, so we can all learn from them.

I paid over US$10k to a 'professional' marketing consultant - the worst thing I ever did in this business. But it taught me a lot about what I can actually do myself at least to as good a standard as most of these 'professionals'.

The second worst mistake I made was not developing the domains into sites - something again I have learned to do, a site will earn far more money than a parked domain and it can become much more valuable.

The third mistake, but perhaps the one that still irritates me, was forming a partnership with someone else who it turned out did just about nothing but was entitled to a cut of my sales. I guess this is personal, but then again it is all part of the learning curve.

.info

This was definitely my biggest mistake. I never should have created this extension registered so many of them. It was definitely the cause of one of my biggest discouragements.

I'd have to say the root of the mistake was not doing research before I dove into domaining. I would definitely be a lot happier if I had.

hmm, my biggest mistake probably is registered a trademark domain against botw.org, WTH!

I sold a keyword .com with no reserve (having put complete faith in my broker) and lost my pants on the transaction.

I have attempted to buried this memory. Thanks for the reminder. :)

In the beginning, buying up all those shitty domains! 8-X

Amen to that!

GoDaddy's Premium Listing recommendations screwed me big-time! At the time, I figured those were somewhat accurate evaluations, but soon realized (after about 50 purchases of similar domains) that those were just auto-genned and inflated recommendations.

I thought that I was different from the rest and figured that the NP recommendations of "read this forum and follow sales for a month BEFORE making any purchases" applied to all newbies but me. This was actually fantastic advice!

Keeping secrets from the wife was very stupid.

One of my worst decisions was to buy domains that I didn't want to keep to make other similar domains seem more rare. If you don't want the domains, don't expect somebody else too.

This is an excellent thread btw....and the question is tough! I have learned from many mistakes but the one that cost me the most on the backside was when I registered a hyphenated .com domain name that was the same keywords as a .com I was in negotiations on for a possible high $x,xxx sale. I recieved an ok on the final settlement price and then they came back the next day and had noticed I registered the hyphenated name, whilst in negotiations for the other name they had agreed to buy. They thought that was being underhanded somehow and backed out of the deal. I didn't lose anything really but I was in high hopes the sale would be the biggest sale for me yet! And the money would have helped big time. Oh well, ....Here's to %%- ! ........:'(

On the other hand though..... if I had not registered the hyphenated name...they may have just used that name instead to save $. ;) I may have made the right choice on this because now I have an idea how much liquidity the domain they wanted has.......and I have the hyphenated version!

Registering too many catchy, brandable names that have little resale value (unless the buyer has the exact same vision), even though in the back of my mind I knew I didn't have the time to develop all of them.

I think the biggest mistake anyone could ever make in domaining would be to listen to anything that guy with the John Holmes avatar has to say. IMO.

My mistake:

Registered a lot of DILF domains...

At one time i used to own 1762 domains (631 .com domains and 850 .info domains)

Most of them were rubbish and TMed...which i have been dropping these days.

Now i own 621 domains only.... which is 35% of my total domains..

My mistakes were:
1. handregistering useless names without learning anything about domain values
2. not knowing there are coupons for cheaper registrations

I've put up a good domain for auction @Sedo no reserve, I was expecting it to sell for more than it did.
IMO, Auctioning @Sedo is not the way to go with good domain names. It's like selling cucumbers to the gardener.

I registered 2 .asia domains. That was a waste of money. I let both expire B-)
