The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.mobi is still alive however most people making money in the .mobi extension will tell you that it's through unique and compelling content (aka domain development), not through buying/selling/trading .mobi domains. As far as domaining is concerned, the extension is pretty much dead with a very limited number of people still profitably buying and reselling .mobi domains.

Just wait another 2 years and see what happens with .MOBI, it has not really taken of yet.
You know how many years it took .COM to succeed. The mobile internet will be huge and .MOBI
will play a big role in that.

Just kidding, indeed it's quiet but not only here and I wouldn't blame the MOD's for that.

And yes, I own some MOBI's. (Good ones ofcourse)i

This section is dead because of the new layout. Mobi enjoyed a top position on the page with not only upper left hand corner but also an image. Now this section is just one of many and there is no draw here.

There is really nothing left to discuss about mobi. I guess we could rehash any one of a thousand different arguments but why? For all intense purposes mobi is dead for most domainers. A few die hards hold on tight but the general domainer has moved on to greener pastures.

This section had it's day in the spotlight...the fat lady has sung.

Dream on Labrocca, this section died a long time before the layout change. You and others rag on .mobi and it's enthusiasts for years until they leave and then you declare the extension dead. What a demented spin.

Actually .mobi is not dead. It has a sustained level of new registrations each month and now it has started to grow again. Domaining is not the sole method of evaluating an extension.

NamePros.mobi is nearly dead, so the .mobi addictions have no convenient access to NP any more :(

Based on the above, fewer and fewer addictions will be NP .mobi section ...

From what I've seen, .mobi domains seems to rank better on Yahoo and Google's mobile search engines -- if that's indeed the case, then they have a very obvious use for development.

Well it really depends on what timeline you go by to start. I would say it was doing very well in 1997 or 1998 and that's about the last couple years that registering keyword domains was possible. But the internet was around since the 80's. I would mark the start of the modern internet in 1994 when Netscape Navigator was released. Mosaic was released in 1993 and was the first graphical browser but I would start at 1994. So that's imho about 3-4 years before the net took off.

Mobi is already in it's 3rd year now isn't it? Many mobi fans say it will take years for mobi to be a success but I think it's going to take years for mobi fans to realize the failure. Mobi was done incorrectly. It had a chance but ultimately it is not catching on.

Agree with you there Jesse -- would be silly to say .com took 10+ years because you start counting from 1985 when nobody even knew what an Internet was

Theres no reason to use a .mobi when you can (semi)easily browser detect and redirect to m.yourdomain.com or even serve a mobile css (stylesheet) to optimize your site for mobile.

In another 5 or so years you probably won't even have to do that.

RIP .mobi

.mobi dead or .mobi on NP dead ?

mobi on np is going through the final stages of rigor, which is in no small part due to how the users investing in dot mobi have been constantly berated by certain individuals. It is however, very much alive and flourishing elsewhere.

I look in every now and again to see what's happening on here, and I can see the number of people willing to post on here in the mobi section dwindling. Soon ... it will just be Jesse left to play with himself, if it doesn't pick up.

Believers will have you believe anything :D

They'd like you to believe that .mobi is a major success in an alternate reality.

I posted this in the .tv section - just as relevant here - The Cult Test, Questions 0

Sad to say this section has deterioated over the past year and a half or so. Jesse, anyone who's been around awhile knows this has absolutely nothing to do with the new layout. That's just flat out laughable. Quite frankly, it's quite interesting to see you were chosen as a Mod here. Was Jeff not available?

Rep to you for the link. It will help quite a bit for research for my upcoming cults.mobi project

To say .mobi is dead is only a very slight exaggeration, it is a bit like saying .biz is dead, ok some people still speculate in it but it is as good as dead.

The new theme now with .mobi speculators is talking of development, that is what happens when there is no money left in anything else, you take down the goalposts in favour of a another more opaque scoring method.

Here is an interesting comparison,

In 2007 dnjournal reported 44 .mobi names in their global contenders sales chart (44% of the global contenders chart)

In 2008 dnjournal it was 10 .mobi names in their global conteders sales chart (10%)

In 2009 dnjournal they have 1 .mobi name in their global contenders sales chart (1%)

You can see how sales have shrunk even compared to other less than stellar extension that make up that chart (.net, .org .info, .biz etc)

Admittedly mtld seems to have given up on the auctions though still the extensions performance is lame.

Snoop, there's nothing new about it, I and others have been discussing development since '06. The problem is you've been too busy trying to declare .mobi is dead to notice.

Well, part of the question was if .MOBI is dead on NP and yes it is. It's getting a bit scary now if the
.MOBI community has withdrawn themselves in the holy .MOBI church. and we all know where that is.
You can still join the .MOBI community but please do not talk about things outside the church, where the bad guys are. I think there is a word for that kind of communities but I won't say it here.
Don't y'alll see that you are not helping dot .MOBI by not posting here. You all ought to promote .MOBI
wherever you can, despite some people overhere who are bashing the TLD. You all are making a big
mistake by not posting here anymore.

Oh wow, I had never crunched the numbers.. Didn't realize it was that popular in '07. You're right though Snoop, development really is the only thing left for the extension at this point imho. Too much hype, too many promises that weren't delivered breaking the trust of even many of the faithful, a recession that has hit speculative investments very hard...

If it does rank better for mobile sites and assuming it stays that way, the domains may have value in the future when the mobile web becomes more popular. It does seem to rank better at present on both Google and Yahoo for mobile searches however not much stays the same in the search engine camp and I'm pretty sure if my oberservation is correct, SEOs will exploit it until it's changed as soon as they see potential profit.

I've tried to be more proactive of dealing with trolls (not referring to you headstart) -- you don't see it because deleted posts or threads become invisible to everyone other than mods and NP staff. That having been said, there's a big difference between a troll and someone who disagrees with popular opinion.
