no you only get an account when you buy a domain or hosting but i would HIGHLY recomend not using them I have had problems with them as have many others.

1&1 (or oneandone as they also go by) have grown way too big for their own good and dont seem to care about their customers.

I'd stay away as their transfers are a royal pain. The seller has to send a fax and the new buyer has to send a fax with their personal information to get an account set up if you don't already have one with them. Their domains may be cheap, but so is their service. Remember that you get what you pay for. ;)

I've definately noticed that as well filth, haven't heard to many good stories from customers of their service.

yeah if it wasnt for the way they treated customers they could be a real good company.

When I had a site with them I didnt notice a single time my site was unavailable and it always had good speeds (the site was with them for 2 years). But their complete lack of customer service kill them. Alot of the time they don't even respond to suppot quieries

I ordered some free .info's recently and they came up on my account as 5.95 a piece. Apparently hidden somewhere it said you couldn't get the infos if you already had an account. So I told them to take them off of my account along with the charges, and have not heard back yet.

That's odd, as I received an email from 1and1 encouraging me to take advantage of the free domains.. I have registered 17 in the past 2 or 3 weeks and have had no charges appear as yet.

Hopefully you're wrong on this...

Here's the partial text of the email I got:

Special offer - free .INFO domains for 1&1 customers

As a special offer for all 1&1 customers, we are offering you the chance to register up to 25 .INFO domains, free for one year. This offer also ends soon, so act quickly to secure your distinctive .INFO domain for a particular project, hobby, or that special area of interest.

Quick tip: To add on a domain in your existing package, log in to your Control Panel and select your package. Click on 'Domains' and in the domain overview table's toolbar, click 'New' to start your order.

You'll note it specifies the manner in which to add .info to an existing account, so I'm surprised you were charged.

Thanks a TON for that copy. I'm going to be replying again to their email and including that in my text. Again, thanks a load.

After I responded to them telling them that I would issue a chargeback, I got this:

"Thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry for the errors we have issued the credit the charges.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely
Carlin Chesnet"

Think they were just trying to pull it over my head or something?

Certainly seems like it.. you know, for all the bad press they have gotten, I have yet (knock on wood) to have a problem with them but all the complaints I hear have certainly kept me on edge!

My major complaint has been that there is no easy way to push a domain to another account. If there was, I'd probably buy all my domains thru them.

Great! BTW- this is on 1and1's own site:

Please note: These promotional prices are valid for one year and are valid as long as you have a contract with 1&1. Professional Preview Package customers are welcome to take advantage of this offer by upgrading their package.

You'll note it specifies "new and existing" customers.... hope this helps anyone in the future as well.

If I remember correctly, when I got those 25 free infos I was agreeing to allow 1and1 to automatically charge my credit card for the next renewal cycle. Cancel your cc about 60 days before expiration just in case to prevent any headaches.

I questioned 1and1 in advance about the renewal price per domain. Here's their response:

1] What is the .info domain renewal price after the initial free year?
>> The renewal price after one year would be $5.99, based on the price before our promotion.

2] Is there a restriction regarding moving the .info domain to another registrar before the free year has expired?
>> No there are no restriction in transferring a .info domain.

Thank You!

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.
