Why is .ws such a bad extension?

I've noticed a lot of domainers say .ws is horrible, and is basically crap that will never sell. I feel .WS is a lot better than the other tlds (.name / info / .mobi / other country tlds (some of which are really expensive) at least it has one thing going for it, the fact that .WS can stand for WEBSITE.

Why is .ws not more popular? Is it because of the GDI MLM business connected with the domains? Is there not any great websites that use the .ws extension? I just don't understand why it's not more popular.

Also can anyone give me a website that lists the .ws domains that have sold? Thanks.

.ws names sold in 2004-2006

blogs.ws $1,600
save.ws $417
green.ws $227
Avatars.ws $400
VOIP.ws $2,000 Sedo
Game.ws $1,000 Namepros
VacationRentals.ws $800 Private
VoiceOverIP.ws $600 Sedo
PersonalInjury.ws $600 Private
NikeSports.ws ($480)
UsedBooks.ws ($240)

Thats a big part of it ;)

Also : The cheesy MLM type marketing they've used .....

I still own a few keyword .ws Domains and even one rare one (The type of this domain is reserved , But I got mine :p ) But for the most part - I've never seen much resell value in them or any Natural traffic to speak of. Whereas - I own two of the other extensions you mention above and have seen Instant traffic from at least one of them (.info).

I like .ws ok, but I don't like that it is not popular. I also don't like that just as .bz you cannot transfer the domains to another registrar. This means that any .ws domain that I buy at Godaddy HAS to stay at Godaddy. My only options are to sell it or let it drop and try to get it again at another registrar. But the domains are popular enough that I would probably lose if it I let it drop...

You can build a nice site on a .ws domain and you can also get some good parking revenue if the domain keywords are good, so what's wrong with it?

In my opinion it's Domain Snobbery. They may be trash for some people, and treasures for others...

didn't know it wasn't transferrable between registrars!
why would they create such a limitation?
that's most likely the reason why their hard to sell!

if they are regged at godaddy or dynadot i don't see the need to transfer them. Anyway if in 2010 only your registar put a $200 .ws renewal price, you have to pay it.

But anyway they are west samoa domains (.ws), why should they be a good extension?

Or you could sell it or drop it... Of course if you have a site on it, you will probably pay the fee, but if you are parking the domain, you may not want to keep it.

Personally, while I have quite a few domains at Godaddy, it's because I bought them from others. I will be transfering all of them to places that are cheaper, and I think as good or better (Godaddy does have very good support.).

But as to what country an extension belongs to, I don't think it makes too much difference after the top 6 (com org, info, biz, and us). Of course I am speaking from a US perspective. For those in other countries the list of top 6 may be different.

But they all work fine for hosting a web site, and with other TLDs you can get words you can get in the top 6. And in some cases a ccTLD can be a plus for people to remember it. Delicio.us for example, and Living.in for another.

Can we start a .ws section at Namepros. I think there's a lot of scope to promote the extension and I for one volunteer to work on it. What do people think and is anyone else up for working on this? I am also PM'ing namepros management on this..

:hi:

That policy was created as an incentive so Registrars would offer the .WS extension.

This way, unless the domain drops, the Registrar would be guaranteed the renewal fee.

Yes, .WS is the country code extension for West Samoa but that's not
how the extension is marketed to the public.

Two entrepreneurs licensed the right to operate the .WS domain extension.

Originally .WS was marketed as World Site.

Then it was later changed to mean Web Site which is much better :imho: .
