I buy them for 3.50 then transfer them out or sell them before the year is up. Works for me. I don't keep any of my "value" domains there. Just speculating ones that I dont care about but that make me a pretty good ROI.

they're good for checking all the popular extensions available besides .ca. that's about it.
-transfers to other registrars are a nightmare.
-they billed me for something i didnt buy, forcing me to waste time calling my cc company.
-they send me unsolicited spam, disguised as the 1&1 newsletter. for the first (last?) time ever, though, ill admit that the last one offering adwords, adcenter, and ysm credits was good.

Avoid at all costs

They wouldn't let me transfer or cancel my domains. They sent me to a collections agency and damaged my credit after I *won* a dispute through my credit card company.

Pretty Decent...

I thought it was extremely easy to get a domain from them. I see there are lots of negative feedbacks but I've not had any problems. I haven't had to contact them for anything and I'm pretty pleased with what I have.

Customer for several months, no problems.

I have had no problems with 1and1 hosting and domains. The fact that they give you free domains with hosting accounts is awesome.

It's true, they could improve the process of transferring domains to other people... but it's not impossible. You just simply have to know how to do the process... I think it is more secure this way.

They suck!!

I registered a domain with them 5days back and it hasnt shown on my account. I just called them up and this one girl who doesnt even know to speak or understand basic english and used "sir" every sentence told me they have problems with the registrar. I asked her two more things and for everything her response was "I am sorry Sir, the registrar doesnt work"

where do you buy for $3.50?

i signed up back when they were giving the 3yr free hosting deal. ive been with them about 4yrs, they are OK.

love the $5.99 domain name price, but they only allow you to register 1 name each order.
it takes about 20sec to other each name. they do not offer a bulk list order style. but other than that, they are fine.

oh yea, it is a little hard to cancel, you have to log in to a speical page
url: http://cancel.1and1.com just to cancel

Review

I hate them! they deleted all my domains .co.uk ones, beause i violated there TOS, i phoned them up asking what i violated and they didn't know, they were rude and abusive to me through email, and didn't respond to my emails, they are the worst register in the world, please avoid.

I had to pay 60.00GBP extra after they deleted my .co.uk domains (which today i never had a statement saying why) the fees i had to pay was to nominet to change register, good job i only had 6 names with them, imagin if i had all my .co.uks with them would be bankrupt lol, its 10.00GBP to transfer domains to a different register.

anyways just my little problem - they suck

amazing. There are fanastic features and [with hosting] has great domain capabilities.

The hosting is great too. There are only a few problems:

Control panel is a bit slow - and gets annoying to use
username choices are wierd - they are like: u0193583
not manyt features if not hosting.

I would seriously suggest staying away from this company especially if you wish to host a site.

Like somebody said, the only good part is the pricing. The customer service is horrible. I had a problem deleting a domain name name from a package(it wouldnt let me do it)..so I emailed them, got basically an automated reply, I then called and the women told me it would just be easier if I emailed them. So I kept trying..and after having to wait 4 days in between for a response, by that time the next billing period had hit and they bill me for another 3 months. Crazy. If you want the domain there forever, and will NEVER need any customer service..then yeah, go for it.

BASICLAY THERE ARE A LOT OF BAD POINTS…..

* As I haven’t got a clue on making sites all I do is buy domains and change the DNS to sedo or 1plus. And I reckon 1and1.com is just good for newbie’s to get a hang of things so they can learn the domain trade.

** The reason why I said that is good because I make about £10pm just on myspace profile >>

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=88651674

As you will see I have a domain search box in my profile which is from www.1and1.com, anyway when someone buys a domain though my link I make £2. Which isn’t bad I think?

I use upanmes.com now.

But 1and1 is not too bad. I still have 10 names with them. Never had a problem transfering names out. Always helpful. A little slow for some things. But how often do you change settings. Not very often. Overall it OK.

Thanks,
ivnj

Worst registrar EVER

I tried to register a domain with 1&1. They responded, claiming they couldn't verify my order, so they wanted me to call them. They said that they might need my ID. I've registered domains from several registrars and not one has asked for ID.

1and1 Ripped Me Off Repeatedly! No exaggeration!

1and1 Internet Inc. have ripped me off plenty of times, and I'm just a small-time domainer. Imagine what the bulk buyers must put up with!
- I got billed one month when I hadn't even purchased anything with them! Luckily, Visa charged it back.
- I had over $60 in domains renewed when I asked to have them cancelled then followed their instructions to do so.
- Their dispute resolution shmuck blamed me rather than try and help out seriously.

I HATE 1AND1 and ADVISE YOU NOT TO GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS. THEIR CHEAP PRICES DONT MAKE UP FOR THEM STEALING YOUR DOUGH LATER!

The worst i've come across.....serious domainers beware!

I used 1and1 during the free info bonanza....and i'm glad i did. The free info deals let me see just how horrible 1and1 really is. I never purchased a domain with them, but i had major headaches when trying to transfer some of my infos from them.

They also take the liberty of renewing your names for you, and sending you the bill. Whether you wanted to keep the name or not.

You have to jump through hoops to drop a name.

Not worth the headache and hassel!

How do you cancel something you don't want on there?

I (well, my mum did) got a letter yesterday stating that if I didn't pay up for something I didn't even realise I had 'bought' then it'd be sent to their lawyers.

I've bought a domain from there which I used for about 3 months on a free webhosting company but this other thing which looks like web hosting I've never used.

Any help?

Rep left too.

the fact you have received this letter suggests it is too late to cancel. They can and will call in debt agencies unfortunately.

They are not a pleasant company to del with.

I've paid it now. Probably best to avoid all the hassle it will cause even though I've never used it and didn't even realise it had been purchased.

Thanks anyway.

Ensure it is now cancelled as well otherwise you will have the same problems next year.

Done so. I couldn't login on the link that was left above but found that it was contract.1and1.com and have managed to cancel. Also emailed them to make sure this was the case too.

Thanks people. :)

Too many things wrong with 1&1 to even list!

I have used 1&1 for both domains and hosting for over 4 years. I would have left them long ago, but they make it nearly impossible to cancel or transfer service, at least without paying double. Their domain interface has no bulk features, meaning that dns, lock/unlock, transfers, etc all have to be done one at a time, usually takes three or four screens to do the most mundane functions.

The real evil brilliance is in their TOS, a must-read for anyone seeking to write a "How to sodomize your customers" contract. Its terms include a mandatory extra year registration fee to transfer domains out, express rights to bill your credit cards months and even years after you have transferred or canceled a service or domain, automatic assignment of accounts to collection agencies for unpaid domain fees after 7 days (In violation of ICANN, of course) and, finally, since the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are not good enough, 1&1 even tries to change the legal statute of limitations for complaints against them from 3 years to 1.

Here is a sample from their TOS:

------------------------------------------
2.2.5.

1&1 will accept the transfer of domain names from other registrars, provided however, that you will be required to pay for an initial year of registration fees upon transfer. Domain names which have been prepaid for a period of more than one year but with fewer than nine years remaining may also be transferred, subject to the payment of an initial year of registration fees. An additional year will be added on to the remaining term of any transferred domain. Domain names with more than nine years remaining on the registration period may not be transferred. Upon the expiration of the one-year extension you will be charged an annual renewal fee for any subsequent renewal period. By requesting the transfer of your domain name you authorize 1&1 to debit your Payment Account for the one-year registration fee and any related fees or charges.
-------------------------------------------
In other words, months after canceling a hosting service or domain name, they will still bill you on the anniversary date of the service, if not before. I experienced this firsthand. Using cancel.1and1.com never works and you have no proof that you clicked the links on their emails, so it took certified letters from me with screenprints to escape their re-billing!

If you have had problems with 1&1, here is another helpful post from:
http://www.brainfuel.tv/1and1-hosting-cancellation
-------------
I am an investigative journalist, and have just had a major run in with 1&1 over a fundraiser that they botched the website. Thanks to industry contacts, we have an active file with Tom Corbett’s office at the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Here is the information if you’d like to be added to one of their many complaints:

Madlene Dakour
Bureau of Consumer Protection
Philadelphia Regional Office
21 South 12th Street, 2nd Floor
Philadelphia, PA 19107
(215) 560-2414

She is great, and is taking information regarding problems with 1&1. We are also working with other national media venues regarding this story, and currently have more than 10,000 written complaints within a few days. Keep up the fight, and keep calling the BBB and Attorney General’s office.
-----------------------

All of the above is just the tip of the iceberg, I haven't even started on the problems I experienced with their hosting service or billing department. Do yourself a BIG favor, and go anywhere else for domains or hosting!
