I crossed 27000 domain milestone today. I meant to start the sequel of my "5000" thread when I was at 20k, then at 25k, but never got around.

I am curious how things have changed for all of us since mid 2020 when I had the first poll.

My portfolio is 5.4 times larger than 2.8 years ago, so growing probably around 80% a year. Not quite doubling, but still a decent rate.

Almost all my names are with Godaddy save for hundred or so with Dyna. This helps with reducing admin load.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You're basically running a marketplace, RightBrand, like BrandBucket & others. Difference is, you only sell your own inventory.

Is it a one-man show in terms of management?

Will you ever start selling our domains? Curious..

Good luck

That's great, 27k domains most be a lot of hard work and lot's of initial investment. You were saying about 260k in renewals and some profit, but did you counted the initial investment and in how many months/years you will recover your investment? I mean, most of your domains were not hand regs, so even at $50 on average, from 5k domains to 27k you would have invested 1 million dollars in 2 years, that's a big amount. Counting the renewals, I can guess that you didn't recovered your investment. Do you have an idea, when you will be on pure profit, counting acquisition cost, renewals, commissions and your time? As the saying, you need money to make money.

That's a nice looking site. Was just going thru my Wordpress theme folder, getting it organized.

So is that a custom WP theme and it looks like sometimes it passes thru Dan and sometimes you handle it yourself, WooCommerce?

Side note, your privacy-policy and terms page are showing up blank for me.

Manslaughter is still my favorite.
Remember me when you’re famous, @Recons.Com

A real killer domain
For Lawyers, misdemeanors can be considered a “win” for severe cases that get downgraded. He’s a genius.

What’s the relevance. Same with manslaughter? I think. @jberryhill would be godsend to answer this question —I dont know why i love it; still my favorite one he has.

congratulations

Do you ever drop names or just grow?

Thank you! I drop around 1% as I keep improving my "brand sense" and some of the old buys might not look good any more at the time of renewal.

Indeed. There's a definite and definable ratio to be had. Your time spent or the money outlay/income. Unexpected life events can suddenly also change everything overnight as I found out in 2007.. One moment everything seems to be on course for ever. Then it isn't

For me it was the sudden death of my Wife at 44 and the impact that several hundred thousand pounds, that you didn't expect appearing in my bank account. It's long past ... But the changes that follow in your life have very little to do with logic. Of course we had our insurances but it just added to my confusion at the time, I learnt you don't even claim - your bank in the UK, just processes everything automatically. Not necessarily a good idea

I couldn't concentrate on domains for several years (Whisky, yes)- Renewals just become another monthly outlay, nothing more. I could see myself has being very much in your shoes had things stayed on course. Sue was such a good administrator. Certainly made up for my lack of.

I just felt it appropriate to explain my change in direction. Not to impact on the general thread I hope.

I am so sorry to hear what happened to you. I hope you are ok now. It is never to late to restart and pick up where you left.

What's your current STR and average sales price?

You are definitely big enough to request special pricing from domain registrars.

STR: it is not easy to calculate for a fast growing portfolio. But if I adjusted for weighted and also for the time it takes for the names to propagate through FT and get on the radar of buyers, then it is around standard 1%.

Special pricing: I mean GD DDC pricing is pretty much close to the verisign wholesale. Not sure how it can be lower without some Verisign specials for registrars.

Thanks for starting the discussion and poll @Recons.Com and congratulations on achieving such a large, quality portfolio. Hats off to your management skills.

I really like your emphasis on learning, both from your own portfolio and discussions, and your quantitative focus.

My keeper portfolio around 500. If younger in life I might be tempted to a larger portfolio. In a strange way, spending time on analysis and writing keeps me from spending as much effort growing, but I am happy at my portfolio size.

Best wishes,

Bob

Thank you, dear Bob. I always felt you could scale your portfolio if you wanted to with your knowledge and analytical skills.

Domain investment, of course, is not easy if you are risk-averse. The costs are as certain as taxes and death, while the revenue is not guaranteed by no means. But I am used to probabilistic approach to investments due to my work experience and education (for example, an oil company can easily spend 100 million $ on a well with 85% chance of ending up dry), so I realize that it might be harder for most people.

congrats on reaching 27000. Just a question... Is 27000 your whole portfolio or keeper portfolio? If your whole portfolio, what percentage do you have that you will never sell?

For me, I have about 200 domains. I am about to drop about 30 of them over the next year. The rest, I plan to develop / sell. My actual keepers (that I will never sell) are only about 10 domains. So in percentage terms currently 5%

Congrats @Recons.Com on this milestone. I am amazed, not a long ago when we spoke you had around 24k names and you managed to add a "few" more in no time. Still cannot understand how you can analyze, filter, spotcheck and buy 1k+ names a month... I am happy for your success, everyone sees the glory moments usually but they forget to take into account the hard work behind the scenes.

I know this is not an AMA, but I hope you don´t mind I am asking two things that might help others also here.

- having the financial backround : how do you keep track of such a huge portfolio? Do you do balance sheets each month via Excel?
- how do you normally proportion sales money when it comes to scaling such a high pace? reinvest+renewal 60%, 20% taxes, 20% to keep it for yourself? Is it a fair assumption? Has this changed now with the recent market situation?

Wow, 27K! :xf.love:

That's massive compared what I have - slowly growing only with 150+ names.

How do you manage so many names though? Or more specifically, what tools do you use?
If you ever get time, please consider writing a post on your domain management tools.

Best wishes 🌹
Fayaz.

I used to have close to 3K names up until ~last year, but only 5-700 ”keepers.” I’ve scaled my time investment way back, and buy very very little on the aftermarket these days.

But 27,000 “keepers”? Sounds like hell to me :xf.eek: I can’t imagine the time and cash it must have taken to bulk up that fast, and the energy and focus it takes to keep it up. But if it pays to grow that much that quick, it must pay real nice...

That's really impressive! As someone that previously worked at GoDaddy, I can confirm you are in the top 1% of domainers at GD.

You focus on quality is very similar to my strategy; I focus on brandability as well as liquid domains for safe investments (3L, 4L, 5L in rare cases) as well as top paying keywords from a landing page perspective. I'm sitting at roughly 200 names right now; large majority are 4Ls.

Keep up the solid work!
