"OpenAI has purchased the domain name AI.com for $11 million [(unconfirmed)], which was previously owned by Future Media Architects (FMA) and sold through Saw.com. The domain name now redirects to ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot owned by OpenAI." - u/jonathonhewitt via Reddit

Confirmed on SawSells twitter: https://twitter.com/sawsells
There, someone asks basically the same question we all have:

Was the sale price indeed $11 million?

I did not see an answer from Saw.com, maybe you could link to it.

I guess there is no confirmation of the sales price, only the buyer. I will update original post.

There's no confirmation of the purchase everywhere. ai.com and openai.com use different registrars and DNS, a redirect doesn't prove an acquisition. It could just be that OpenAI has leased ai.com for a redirect.

Edit. Never-mind @sawsells seems to verify a recent purchase of the domain.

I'd love for OpenAI to own ai.com, because there's no other AI-related company that I'd trust more for the purposes of reinforcing the value of .com:s. If a reseller held on to ai.com, it would be wasted potential, and OpenAI might have acquired something like open.ai and added value to the .ai extension instead.

The more big guys that use the .com, the more valuable it becomes.

If they only got 11 mil they were robbed really bad. Ai right now is the hottest topic. Billions being invested. Major companies around the globe are all in. Voice.com 30m NFTS 15 mil, Ai.com during a complete Ai craze, 11 mil or under?

Yeah, $11 million seems shortchanged.

But I don't think the price is going to be disclosed, and I'm fairly certain $11 was the asking price back in 2016 or something like that, so I doubt that's what it sold for recently.

But it's also important to understand that it's difficult to find the right buyer when dealing with these kind of price ranges. So while NFTS.com sold for $15 million, NFT.com sold for $2 million shortly after, even though it's arguably more valuable.

My best bet for the sales price would be $XX,XXX,XXX. But any specificity beyond that I think would be unreasonable.

You have about 30 companies valued at over 250 billion that are investing heavily in AI. A broker that didn't contact all of them using phone, email, mail, to try to sell Ai, did not do their job at all. I hope Saw did the best for the seller, because the 11 million is terrible. It could also be the seller needed the money right now or insisted it close at that.

Your point about them using a .com is very good, we all won a bit by having the big name in this area (although they risk their reputation if it's true the bot is political, they might alienate half of the country) use a .com

I don't think it sold for $11 million.

The $11 million was the 2016 asking prince.

Either way, it's not impossible that this is what it sold for. After all, it's "just a domain" and a lot of large companies would rather promote their own established brands rather than creating new subsidiaries with generic names. OpenAI is relatively new, so it makes sense for them to acquire it.

Yes. As a .com investor with an extensive portfolio of .com domains it's a good thing large enterprises investing in quality .com domains and using them. Because it's going to signal to other businesses that they need .com too.

Almost. Not recent. They said the transaction happened over a year ago.

Hm. Then I'm inclined to believe that someone else bought it and that OpenAI is leasing it because from what I understand the redirect is rather recent.

That's a bit disappointing.

This is what @EJS wrote on his blog, Sep 2021.

Jeff responded to my query and confirmed that AI.com has been sold by FMA. Although the purchase price is not going to be announced, I understand the asking price for AI.com was $11 million. Jeff told me it was sold “to someone in the NFT space.” He also said, “I am elated for the buyer and the seller.”

I wonder if we will know more precisely soon. Maybe it will be mentioned in an annual report.

hope he didn't trade AI.com for a picture of an ape
OpenAi aren't in the nft space are they? Or is it the dall-e side of OpenAi? From what I can tell my searching "site:open.ai nft" and "site:openai.com -community.openai.com nft" there's hardly any results. So I'm deducing that they're not in the nft space.

There is some NFTs built by ai, but I think it's just a small niche in the NFT space.
