I came across a former financial institution who has now merged with another and let their domain expire. Still plenty of backlinks appearing in Google Search to their original domain, although the domain name itself is an acronym that isn’t very appealing on its own. I’m a newb so an wondering if there any obvious opportunity here. Should I buy it and park it and hope for some juicy CPC revenue for a while at the risk it might be taken away from me down the track (which I’d be fine with)…

Yes, it's the parking business.
However you should verify that is not anymore a trademark.
Moreover you should consider that most probably the domain will go to auction. Financial institution means high CPC, so more than one will be interested in.

"Domain Authority" is pretty much a worthless metric. I wouldn't even bother looking at it, as it means nothing really when it comes to actual search engine rankings--not to mention that it can easily be manipulated to appear a domain has a "high DA". Many manipulate a site's DA just to sell the domain.

Check the DNP Score of the domain, that's much more appropriate for this. It checks the trademark status while calculating the score. Also, you might want to go to USTPO's TESS to check the TM status. If it was a former company or brand, then most likely it is trademarked, that's just my guess.

It means nothing to domainers, but means alot to other industry. They bought 20,000$ up at Godaddy Auctions for these kind of high DA/PA domains. They don't invest in vocabullary words .com. I guest most of domainers don't even get money from domaining enough to compete them.

Yes, DA/PA can be easily manipulated. But the buyers know how to short them. SEO is not a kid play, that's why they have 20,000$ to buy a domain in Godaddy Auction.

Thanks - the trademark has expired. I am based in Australia - it’s a .com.au domain. I think I might try parking it given the industry it’s in. Any tips on the best parking options ?

Thanks - I was in a bit of a rush so have just used Sedo parking for now. I have already made 2 Euro which to be honest I am pretty happy with. Means I could make 100 Euro per year of passive income from this one

If it was a trademark and they used it I believe that it essentially still exists as far as the law is concerned

Really….I didn’t know that. I had made the assumption a valid & current trademark would need to be in place in order to take any form of legal action. Keen to understand this more as I am pretty new to this world and don’t want to overstep the mark and be penalised heavily for it!
