How do you price a domain name ?

Hi

each domain gets it's own "Wheel of Pricing" board
and on these boards are price ranges for that specific name, as some boards have higher or lower ranges.

then... when an inquiry comes in for that name, i just spin the wheel
and wherever the needle lands, that's the price, give or take a few $.

now, how i plot each board, is based on experience and knowledge that i've acquired over the years.
ie: how much i paid, how much traffic, ppc earnings, how many previous offers, what price i've sold similar names for, etc, etc.

and even after all that, i still may have to go back and "adjust" pricing.
in time, some names become more popular, more valuable, and some names depreciate.

only thru real trial and error, can you get the "eye opening" you seek.

If it's a brandable domain name: the simplest and 100% newbie-friendly method is to submit the name to Squadhelp and they will assign a price tag to the domain. But then list the domain on Squadhelp.

In case of rejection, you can submit the same name to BrandBucket, same process.

But each submission will cost about $1, so only submit good brandables (take a look at their portfolio first).

They assign very reasonable, realistic BIN prices to each domain. Sometimes I increase the assigned price by 10-50%.

This is my pricing strategy.

Benefits:
- 100% newbie-friendly, anyone can do it
- multiple different experts will appraise your domain
- relatively low cost

To price, you have to get into the head and budget of your potential end user. Can they brand on this domain, is it a category killer, what is the market for this industry, how much do they earn per sale, etc. Then you have to research places like namebio or have the experience to know what the market price should be.

Using ShipPropellers as your example.
1. Unlikely anyone would call their company that.
2. It can be a high-priced item, so someone may want to use it for an SEO project or feeder site.
3. Not really suitable for an all-out e-commerce site. Too niche

Based on the market and cost for ship propellers, I'd price it at $1488 retail hoping some company would need it for a marketing project and expect I might not sell it anytime soon or ever.

I could try to outbound market this name and hope for a low to mid XXX price. There are certainly some companies that could put it to use.

Overall, it probably wouldn't be something I would have bought to begin with, because it just isn't very versatile. An outbound domain marketer might give it a go, but as a buy and hold domainer it doesn't appeal to me.
