There is a domain I wanted that the owner hasn't renewed that has expired last week (by chance I monitored the WHOIS for the past few weeks).

It's not a valuable domain, but is just something I personally wanted. It also fulfills the requirements that I know Hugedomains/similar tend to scoop up and hold ransom for 10 years (i.e. 2 word, relevant words, .com).

In such a scenario, are you better off attempting to let the domain expire and hope to grab it with a dropcatcher or hand-reg it, or to message the current seller and try to get them to sell it to you?

Obviously, if you message the seller they are going to immediately renew it, think it's worth more than it is, and quickly renew it. Domain was hand-regged in 2020 for the first time ever. I wouldn't pay much for it personally.

Alternatively, I'm not familiar enough with how the dropped domain process works, and if Hugedomains/similar always beat out an individual when it comes to getting a dropped domain? And if HugeDomains get it, you're stuck with their 2k price tag for every domain for years until they realize no one wants it.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Don't worry about it too much if it isn't worth a lot just make a firm offer it will be the only offer they get just offer some money and say your offer is valid a week. I will say the value is based on how many times you looked it up. Yes can look up how many times it was looked up.

If it has no value and even 2K is too big a price in your mind why do you want it?

If it is any good it will be renewed during grace or go to auction. If its as weak as you say you should have no problem catching it later in June if it drops.

What registrar? It might never make it to the drop if it ends up at an expiring auction.

Don't email the owner, sometimes it works, but when it doesn't you mess it up.

no you won't i tried running my own dropcatch software that i made running on dynadot API
ran 3 at a time and couldn't catch anything that was caught by any of the major players it is a big monopoly you simply can't compete

Theoretically you could, but you would have to run several thousands of very fast computers imo.

Even if you ran 100,000 quantum computers you will never beat DC or SN while using some registrar API.

When was the last time a name that many wanted was caught by someone other than the major drop catchers?

DC and SN use many registrars (DC has their own, SN has their own and partners) to make direct requests to the registry.

If you like a name that is dropping, backorder it by the main catchers.

The back order is your best chance for the lowest price MrOriginal! AE is right on! And then if you don't get it, since you say it has little value get something else close. The stronger the name the better after all!
