As we all know the world is changing fast every day...

New technologies are raising and often I'm wondering what the future of the internet will be.

Especially thinking about domains, what will be the use of them in 5/10/20/30 years from now?

• Will Web3 disrupt the ecosystem or not?
• Will the metaverse create a new world where we will not have to use websites anymore?
• Will these things succeed and become something we'll use on daily basis or it will be a failure?

How all these new things will affect the domain industry?

It will be become apparent what works and what doesn't with time. The whole "decentralization" (in reference to a Web3) is a bit of a dummy buzz word. Behind just about everything is some form of centralization. Take Bitcoin, people say its the most decentralized crypto, yet most of its supply is controlled by a small number of people...Satoshi himself did a pre-mine, and is said to own about a million, whether hes dead or not. Binance, MicroStrategy, Grayscale...around 40% of the market is owned by whales. People kid themselves that Bitcoin is decentralized, same applies to any new innovation that has "decentralization" in mind. IMO

I think Web3 is the start of the slow transition from a 2D to a multi-dimensional internet, which will most likely be Web4. The true era of Metaverses is still far away; quantum computing will have to reach the consumer market in order for it to become a reality.

We have yet to experience a virtual environment that isn't subject to the laws of our physical world. Therefore, metaverse architects and designers will have to eliminate the shackles of our physical reality and create virtual realities that transcend everything we know. Once that happens, the true era of Metaverses will come.

I'd love to see a Metaverse based on the 26-dimensional Bosonic string theory.

As for domains, some sort of positioning system akin to GPS might replace them.

Buzzwords and bias aside, the web as we know it was bound to evolve. Like most things, the internet is “transitioning”. Whether it’s for better or worse will always hinge on some degree of subjective interpretation. User-preferences, relevant use-cases, technological innovation and special-interests will heavily influence how the present, and future, internet transitions unfold.

Uniquely enough, many discussions about centralized and decentralized domains are being driven by the registry debate, TLD clash concerns, trademark infringement worries and ultimately what constitutes security. However, it’s worth noting that SOME people aren’t too fond of change; and thus don’t care to acknowledge positive potential and possibilities.

At bare minimum, decentralized domains offer variation; and thus a broader realm of internet experience options to “choose” from. Yes, there are people who will favor the more conventional way of browsing the internet; but there will also be those willing to give a new segment of internet experience a chance. Decentralized domains are simply a starter in this regard.

In closing, the situation ultimately comes down to “content value” and “accessibility”. If valuable and/or preferred content is pegged to a “decentralized domain”, certain people will do what’s necessary to access it. (Technical politics and safety concerns aside.) Because the internet is a hub for possibility, healthy co-existence of technologies shouldn’t be dismissed or ruled out as a possibility.

What he said. Would like to add, I feel we are still far off from web3 and related technology maturing and becoming mainstream enough for domains not to matter. It's still very, very early. Maybe in 20 years?

This has got to be one of the best forward-thinking replies in terms of the future of the web I have ever read. I would love to come back to this reply in 50 years and be like "wow, someone got it". It's probably not too far off, nor too far-fetched, to believe the web or an incarnation of it is headed in this direction.

I do think both, Web3 as well as Metaverse, are buzzwords of today, but would really be the future. Although that future might be atleast 10yrs down the line and not anytime sooner.
