My domain portfolio strategy (after 3 months)

I just started domaining 3 months ago and I've learned a lot here, so wanted to giveback and share my strategy. There's no right or wrong as everyone has their own strategy that works for them. I'd be curious to hear other strategies, especially those that are similar to mine.

My strategy:
1) Keep my portfolio small and focused, so it is more manageable to buy/sell and also so I am disciplined to keep within budget. I'm currently around 40 domains, my max would be 75 domains. I would not buy more unless I sold some.

2) 98% of my portfolio is .COM. Unless there is a keyword in another TLD that is unregistered (rarely) or worth buying aftermarket. WIth so many new TLDs over so many years, my observation is .COM is still king in value and longevity.

3) 70% of my portfolio is aftermarket purchases, 30% is handregged. IMO, all the good .COM have already been registered and rarely will I come across an available one. Therefore, I'd rather invest and buy 1 good name for $1000 than hand regging 100 bad names for $1000. I feel good names will at least retain value and has more potential to increase in value.

4) 60% of my portfolio names I have the intent to develop. I feel developing the domain names will further promote visibility, market the usage to increase value, while allowing me not to waste the name just sitting in the aftermarket to try to sell especially if it is a brandable domain name. In the end, I can always either the sell the domain only or sell the domain + developed website. I feel the latter will always be more attractive and hopefully fetch more.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
My strategy: Don't really have one, boring. I own less than 100 domains (COM, NET AND DOT CO DOT UK). End user pricing of my stuff is probably XXX, with a very, very small number entering X,XXX. I want to change things up in the coming year or so, reserving some cash for some things that I care about in Biotech / AI. Raising the quality of what I've got (keeping, not selling), with development...a pending strategy

If you have a small portfolio and wait for a first sale....
Imagine you wait maybe 6 months for 1 sale, what will you do after this sale ?

thinning out with quality over quantity and developing them -- you're on the right track!

some people are late bloomers.......
To be fair it should be a requirement to be a member for 10 years before you start buying domains. That is pretty clear.

That allows you to clear at least 15 hype cycles.

Haha, yes I didn't realize I joined 15 years ago.
But I left after back in 2009, to get married, have kids, now I'm back!
A posting gap of almost 13 years!

in early days i was thinking same like you ( few but good quality ) !
unfortunately i realised is not a quality names only , it is more of a numbers game !
means larger portfolio of ( good quality + medium quality ) and to be 97% .com .
Thats my opinion .

yeah I know I can get carried away and keep buying names, but since I buy most of my names aftermarket than handregged, it could get expensive real fast, so I cap the size of my portfolio....it makes me discipline to must sell some before buying more

if domaining is just a hobby for you and not seeking serious monthly or annual profit , of course its good to be discipline and have enugh patience to wait till you sell something , but dont lose that patience over the time and control your self even if took you very long time . ( i hope you can ) .
i wish you all the best :xf.smile:

Way too slow...
not sure what you mean, what you suggesting then?
I don't have unlimited budget to keep buying premium names

I suggest nothing.

With your strategy what could happening ?
1) You sell nothing, you waste your time and your money
2) You have chance, and make 1 or 2 sales, your ROI is positive, for example you invests 5K in 100 .com and you made 2 sales of $3K, so you have 6K by the end of the year, you decide to renew your domains as you spent time to choose them, by the end you have around 5K, so why not continuing but way too slow and risky, as maybe next year, you'll sell nothing...

To be sure you have a good strategy you have to make much more sales, otherwise maybe it's better to play poker or casino...

A proper test would bring you more than 20 sales, otherwise you cannot know how good is your strategy.

My take on this, you have made a few good points regarding quality over quantity so thats good, however....

If you have 40+ names already, this is far too many. I would get between 1 and 5 names after doing lots of research into a prticualr niche. Approach end-users and try make a sale. Get the hang of finding end-users and making a sale before buying more names.

Dont hand reg available names
Stay away from numbers andhyphens
Stick to .COM until you get some sales under your belt
Stay away from company names/trademarks
Dont buy decent keywords in weird extensions that don't have a good sales history
Check our namebio.com and DNJournal to see what names sell

With 40 names at say $10 each, thats $400, if you make a $500 sale, thats only $100 profit.

Even with a plan of developing names, thats still too many to develop and develop properly where they start making money (unless you have a team behind you)

Buy 2 or 3 names at say $200, sell them for $500 or $1000 each, then reinvest that $1000 or $2000 into 10 names at $200....rinse and repeat.

Good luck and welcome to NP

I do have a website of my portfolio with associated domain names/concepts I'm developing but it's password protected as you can imagine the sensitivity as my development is just underway.

No longer surprised why you have such a properly plotted strategy.
Better late than Never.

It's possible! https://www.namepros.com/threads/how-to-develop-domain-names-for-profit.1242996/. Value your input if you get started developing your domain names in 2022.
