I'm getting a refund each other day when I buy something at GD closeouts.

This didn't happen to me before, like ever. But happens now on a high frequency basis.

I've seen that the refund only happens on quite valuable domains that made it there somehow. Well that looks fishy to me, to say the least.

Edit: They either can't deliver the domain, OR they decide to not give it to you and simply refund with no explanation.

Anyone has the same experience?

maybe you should start doing some detective work. take whois screenshots before purchase and several days after refund

When people learn something they start to use it. They are seeing now if they get value by auction now, and then they simply renew and know something new about their own domain. Who cares that you want it or youve been waiting your whole liife to have it but whatever. Business as usual.

Happened to me 2 days ago and they said " It has come to our attention that the seller of *** will not be able to complete the transaction as agreed, as they no longer own the domain "

I think this is out of GD's control.

As Durfer and Dido point out, some of these domains can either be renewed in redemption period, or are served from partner sites.

Has happened to me maybe 20% of the time I have purchased cheap closeouts.

Hell I am getting 2 refunds a day. This is ridiculous.

How come 50% of these names are "unavailable"?

I know already, it's not random. The best quality names I spot at closeouts are retaken back. The better I get at this, the highest the "refund" rate.

It is frustrating when it happens. Watched a domain get overlooked during auction, waited until it went to buy now closeout and was thrilled to grab it at $50. A day later I was refunded. Very sad.

Here is another weird one for you. Just bought one that went to $5 closeout. In Whois it says the expiration date is in February 2022. The date they estimate I will receive this one is 30 days from now? It is usually 5-10 days? Strange, but I won't be heartbroken to lose this one.

Happened to me before twice , When godaddy cannot deliver the name they refund the money and when they get asked why , they reply that the owner seems renewed the name ! But we don’t know the truth !!

Some owners use the auction process to gauge value or interest before renewing their expired name. Happens all the time

It appears that indeed some domain owners decide to renew their domain in the last moment. In such case you are refunded. Getting more info about this was rather soothing as I was thinking something nefarious was going on, but it's not. (Thanks @AbdulBasit.com )

So right now I don't worry about it anymore. Happens from time to time.

Also I've realized that the stream of refunds I had, were all from Namecheap. I believe there was a technical error where non-available domains where listed as closeouts. Basically all the ones that were refunded in the stream of refunds came from Namecheap.

One thing that was strange recently though is that one of these domains has actually been pulled off my account and back to wherever it came from. Have no idea why. But that was an unique situation I guess.

From what I understand when a godaddy-registered domain expires it goes through the cycle and on day 26 it enters expired domain auctions. At this stage when it gets a single auction bid, it gets removed from your account and you can no longer see or recover it. It happened to me.
So normally godaddy-registered expired names cannot be claimed once you bid on them.
Don't know what's the case for domains that are not expired (public auctions).

Like you stated, some of the expired domains found on godaddy auctions are coming from other registrars, I guess that's why you get errors/cancellations/refunds/

Correct, these cases all belong to other registrars.

That’s right , last time I sent email to godaddy to inquire about it they replied that domain was under different registrar and other registrars have different policies for redemption cases and renewals .
