How was this even done? I was an infant but I remember the internet being an infant in the late 90's where could this even have been done?

Domains were free until until 1995. You just had to send an email with your request then wait until they got back to you.

Ah cool, I was 9 so unfortunately missed the boat on that but appreciate the reply.

Don't beat yourself up too much, not sure if one can "miss the boat" on something at 9 years old. Could go give your Papi a lil' smack on the back of the head though.

What do you think we'll be looking back on in 30 years time, domain-wise? Hits and misses, should we have done more diversifying across TLDs/blockchain when we had the opportunity? What will renewals look like? What will domain laws look like?

A lot has changed since the 90s, pre-90s, that's for sure, so I can only imagine the domain landscape to be a fraction of what it is today by 2050.

A lot of people don't realize that the web wasn't even close to commercial before 1995 so any speculating before that was risky (except that domains were free :) Looking back has to be realistic. It was a small number of people that had the foresight to actually invest in 95 & 96.

Yeah, I've found a lot of crap that people held for 20 years from the late 90's apparently regging .com for the sake of it is timeless.

Some thoughts:
There are "crap" names registered every day in ALL extensions.
The reg date is not necessarily the date that someone bought a domain.
The financial risk of maintaining a domain is extremely low.

We're now doing polls about registrars on NamePros. Please realize that we should consider ourselves lucky with the way we can now register domain names. Back in the days we had HOSTS.TXT. This file was manually maintained and made available via file sharing. For a few hosts, this was pretty manageable. For a growing number of hosts, a smarter solution had to be invented. That's how the Domain Name System (DNS) was born.

Imagine we had to discuss the policy and contents of HOSTS.TXT on this forum.

It would look like this: https://marc.info/?l=namedroppers&m=95837759026780&q=mbox

So only a small amount of domains are aged and renewed continuously @jmcc?

This is based on the last known new date for the domain name. The market is a lot more fluid than people expect. The domain names that are continually renewed are often in use or are high value domain names.

I was raised by a single mom on welfare. Dad killed himself when I was 6. Shit happens but unfortunately don't get the option to ask him.

I'm sure everyone has some type of sob story though. Life goes on.

I'm sorry to hear that. Yep everyone has their story but doesn't diminish yours or make it any less important. Respect.
