GoDaddy closeout: I bought a name, but the name belongs to a different GoDaddy account.

So, couple of days ago I bough BuddyBee//com at closeouts.
Paid for it, got a receipt as usual.

Just recently I received refund saying that the closeout was cancelled.

I contacted their chat support and I got a very odd info :
They told me that this name was purchased at godaddy auctions, but the name belongs to a different godaddy account now.
I contacted [email protected], but nothing so far.
Did something like this ever happen to you?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This domain is registered @ Tucows, and I assume sold through sold kind of expired partnership with GoDaddy.

The odd thing is the domain still shows as expired both in the WHOIS nameservers, and if you go to the actual website.

Not odd in my experience.. Those don't update with Tucows & NameCheap & another registrar I can't remember which, until it is delivered to the new account.

Again, in my experience.

Thanks everybody for the reply, what's odd is that according to godaddy support (chat), the name belongs to a different godaddy account now.

Normally it will either get into your account, OR you will get a refund.

It takes some time and often the sale can be reversed, when a partner is involved (e.g. Tucows).

All my closeouts bought at Namecheap for example are always reversed for some reason.

Ok, I somehow thought that it cannot be reversed now.

If you got a refund, then it's over.
It happens when someone is faster than you when purchasing the domain.
The domain appears at closeouts. Then you run to buy it, but at the same time another person also is running to buy it. So the one that first finish with the shopping cart process and pays for the domain, is the one that gets the domain.
In this case I guess that somebody was faster than you when paying for the domain.

Isn't it difficult and stressful to be running while buying domain names? I find it easier to sit by a desk with my laptop.

If domain is added to shopping cart, it cannot be added to another shopping cart.

No man, you must try it. It's quite healthy and de-stressing! :xf.grin::xf.grin::xf.grin:

Nope. When a closeout domain is added to your cart, it still can be added to another shopping cart by another buyer. It only will be unavailable once the domain is paid, not once it's just added to the shopping cart.
EDIT: This happened a few time ago at least with domains registered with another external registrar, like Tucows.

This is not the most common problem.

The most common problem is that (I have been told) those domains are still active in their owner's accounts. They can still renew. And if they do, you won't get the domain anymore. This is for everything that is NOT at GD directly.

Edit: I get a lot of those refunds.

Yes right. But the OP has asked specifically about one domain, and that domain still has not been renewed, looking at the Whois database. So that's why I said what I said :xf.smile:

So, I got an email from GoDady:
this domain was bought by another Go Daddy customer Right before you had completed your order

Looks like that's exactly what happened. But it's kinda new to me: I had a couple of times when i clicked the "buy it now" link, then I clicked "Cart", and it instantly told me that something like "item cannot be added to cart". No way that somebody would process the payment that fast. So, I assumed that somebody has clicked it before me, got it in his cart, and it cannot be added to my cart now.

Anyway, that's odd policy by Godaddy: let 99 people pay, then we will refund 98 of them, and faster person gets the domain. What a race!

Auctions will be able to tell you for sure as they can share the account specific information with the buyer. I cannot on a public forum. I can say that what is posted directly above is true. Domains can be added to the cart by multiple parties but it is the first person successfully complete payment who gets the domain.

Is the same true for handregs – multiple parties can add an unregistered domain to the cart?
