Dear Domainer and Domain Investors

Am at a crossroad of making decisions about my domaining business journey and just thought to post this and hear from the wider community and share from your wealth of experiences.

Have you ever dropped domaining biz for another biz or niche or contemplated it? And why are you still in it or came back into domaining?

My story:
A few years ago, I decided to put my 12+ experience in SEO, Digital Marketing and Web Design/Development to use in domain buy helping individuals, bloggers, startups find SEO rich Expired domains which eventually lead me to build a website where clients do consult me for deals.

I also listed some expired domains for SEO and sold some while eventually developed some to niche sites myself.

Now its been over a year have been much busy finding my foot on the next generation of the web known as Web3 which lead me to opt for building my skills more in Programming and finally am into Smart contract programming, found opportunities that most people and developers don't even know about this amazing next generation of the web called web3 yet (if you care to learn about it I will send you a 2hours+ video where I explained it in-depth and the opportunity for early adopters).

So, am launching a full-fledged free online course platform for programmers in web3 which is yet the first of its kind as students will also earn while learning with free web3/Blockchain/dApp development courses. This will surely be the next project to get 100%+ of my attention for the next phase of my life.

Thus, being at a crossroads of dropping my domaining biz and do away with the website and domain I used to do the biz.

But I love SEO (can't even drop that ever because it is useful even in the new project) and enjoyed my time SEO Domaining.

So, am like should I just hold on to the domain used and I may later still be back to invest some more in domain biz. Yet, am not sure when I will ever have the time to do my Expired Domains SEO research to keep the domain biz going because this new project is time consuming working on new programming projects and courses.

What do you suggest based on your experience of the same or similar crossroads?

Should I just sell off the domain/website am using for the domain biz and move on based on offers that may be incoming (Meanwhile, I once listed the domain for sale and eventually withdrew it back again because I just love domaining as part of putting my SEO expertise to work and help others get quality SEO domains).

Or

I should just let it be maybe who knows I may still find domaining as a biz to re-add to my portfolio later in future.

Head-On:
I got an offer today on one of the domains I listed on the site which interestingly have developed a niche site that is now gaining organic traffic from Google because it's an evergreen niche with unique contents. Still contemplating if to sell it or not.

This was the reason for me to post this as am wonder if just close the chapter and sell off the domaining site domain or hold it while still getting offers once a while via the site I sell the expired domain (Usually custom offers that I do not even list, like someone requesting you help get an expired domain with good SEO in Health niche, Automobile niche and more...Then I had to go into research for such prospect either they will end up buying or not - a bit of distraction now that am not into the domaining thing fully like before)

And if I decide to eventually drop the domain am using for the domaining biz, what can you value it to worth as a domaininer to help me choose from offers to accept as minimum?

Am CONFUSED!

Thank you for sharing your story

I think this has a part assumption that everyone does domaining for a 100% full time living within the community. I would say "most" people do have another job, and that domaining is a side income or pleasure (or both). For me, its a pleasure, for the most part

Regarding your sale, take it if its worth it to you. Everyone has a different circumstance, a different mindset. The right decision is what you want, its your business. If the sale can finance your future endeavours, and it would really help right now, maybe its a consideration

Keep a hand in domaining if you want to, with what time you have spare. You know your priorities

IMO

Interesting story, but nothing unusual. The problem I see here is that failing to plan is planning to fail. I'll not be surprised if in another year you're seeking for advice whether or not to part with your new-found love - web3/Blockchain/dApp.
Read more about SMART principles, adopt and stick to them. If you do, there is no way you can go wrong.
Good luck.

I view domaining as a supplemental side business. Last year my total profit was 2k. I'm guessing most don't make a full time living from domaining. I have a main business venture Wibbets and chewing on making some of my spare domains into a PBN or online media venture. Do what works best for you.

I started domaining in january 1999, and where is all here from then, I was thinking some people 2000's decade might have stopped after comfortable wealth.. as for me, new news makes me always appreciate the WHOIS .com opportunity available if you check..

..got into traffic domains instead of SEO over the years, as luck would have it. Now, fond of NFT favorites a first (these digital assets have NO RENEWAL COSTS starting to notice)

There is no time. Seriously wonder if I can really only manage efficiently "Top50Domains" = just keep upgrading for the best

- have a special day

I sold thousands seo domains years before.
I stopped about 5 years ago as seo data is now available for every one...

I continue to earn money with domains, but differently...

Think Diffferent said the Apple commercial, outside-the-box

I used to sell .coms I reggged from 1999, it was harder to make a living wage with one-and-done sales by myself.. rather I'd like to utilize about 30 or so traffic combined domains for now and tomorrows for yesterdays' werk

That's smart in my opinion definitely the future. I think you can do both if you can properly balance your time between domaining and programming. Best of luck.

I used to spend an enormous amount of time on domaining, monetization, building sites, affiliate programs, adsense, etc.

I realized my time was better spent on other things offline, so I dropped my portfolio down from a high of about 1500 names down to about 250 and went with a buy and hold, fixed price model.

I average about a 10k profit yearly with very little time or money invested. When I get bored or sell a domain, I add a few more to my portfolio.

Thinking about ramping it up a bit again, but sticking to my business model so I don't invest too much time or chase a bunch of other projects.

I want to keep domains as a profitable hobby until I retire and then I have development plans for many of the domains I own at that point.

Hello interesting response...I'm just wondering if you would be interested in looking at some brandable domain names that I'm aware of?

In my point of view, we should put stay on holding our domains until they become valuable enough to go for high price on sale. If we recognize that the domain's category/ field of aspect cannot reach high resale value, we can opt for selling it better. Anyways if we consider it as an asset, we will protect it and not exploit it. I consider it as an asset useful for our future or for friends.

Domaining for me is a secondary revenue stream. I own a construction business and domaining is a hell of a lot easier and less stressful. I would never quit domaining because it requires a fraction of the time Compared to my other business and generates pop up income through the year which is additional to my construction company. I would never just do domaining, it would be too boring, but as a second revenue stream, I don’t see why I should ever stop.
