Uni Registry & Naming (UNR) is auctioning off 23 of these top-level domains (TLDs). Winners will receive both the TLD and an NFT representing the ENS version. The NFT acts as part of the mechanism that easily allows TLD owners to hold control of their TLD on ENS.

UNR says this is the first instance in which both a TLD and an NFT representing the ENS version are being auctioned. The NFTs were minted using the ERC-721 NFT standard.

Are the ERC-721's able to be used as wallet addresses and domains?

I have a few 5L ENS NFT's but I'm waiting for the infrastructure to mature. Doubt there is a great deal of utility in them bar wallet addresses right now. IPFS is still very clique. FYI, there are a heap expiring this year.

Lazer.eth

Cuddle.eth

Datum.eth

DPoS.eth - I'm aware the consensus didn't progress to DPoS, just a punt. Still it's neat.

etc...

(Coindesk)

In a blog post announcing the auction, OpenSea compared TLDs to scarce assets like IP spectrum and internet fiber that are key to the functionality of the Internet.

“Each TLD already generates its own subscription revenue. The future owners can not only use domains within their namespaces as they see fit, but also adjust their pricing models and monetize thousands of premium names and registry-owned inventory,” it continued.

The auction winner would receive ownership rights to the top-level domain asset; ownership rights to the NFT representing their TLD on ENS (and therefore essentially the ENS version of the TLD); control of the entire TLD namespace on DNS and ENS, including all current subscription revenue streams; and the ability to further develop and monetize their assets.

Seems like a novelty to try and generate interest in extensions not many people care about.

.blackfriday
.guitars
.hiphop
.tattoo

etc.

“.blackfriday” is non-politically correct and highly Domestic (like a “US only” thing. I know no other in the world celebrates “Black Friday”
It’s only a matter of time.

Blackfriday is non politically correct.

It’s only a matter of time.

The bigger issue is an extension like that is good for (1) day a year. Retailers would rather just have the sale on their own website. It is pointless.

Not to mention a mouthful

“BLACK FRIDAY” is TWO WORDS, BRAD.

for an extension... used seasonally.

I’m not going to be participating in the auction, but if i won it with a bid of millions or whatever, first business move, i’d make is axe BF (abv.)

How many keywords even fit in an extension like .hiphop or .guitars?

At least ones like .game, .property, and a few others might have potential with the right owner.

Ens may be creating the future. So it's a matter of the future. Domainers should pay close attention to it.

NFT’s are hot and all the rage...

I swear, even Elon Musk takes shots at ‘em, and Elon’s biggest crypto bull as they come.

The only problem is copyright;
Some people pissed; peopls profiting off NFT of their tweets, without their consent.

In this case, Uni owns copyright ownership of ngtlds in question. Smart business move.

I know no other in the world celebrates “Black Friday”

Actually we do have your American Black Friday here in the Netherlands as well, since about 2015. It's highly commercial, and it has no relation with Thanksgiving, like in your country. We already had "Sinterklaas" on December 5th, and Christmas on December 25th, so this additional Black Friday thing at the end of November is a burden for everyone. But we can't stop it...

I think it's more of a hassle regardless, seems very niche market.

And mark my words. Soon the terms "Black Friday" will be deemed too offensive, irrespective of all this. Even if it's a misnomer, context, or otherwise.

This reminds me of the term "Urban" which i also think is falling out of favor. Unlike BF, however, dont believe there is a (.)Urban extension exists, nor is it a Holiday, so seasonal applicably, doesnt exist. Anyway... Point being, "Blackfriday" least favorite of all uni ext, and i dont even find the term disparaging.
