domains .eu Turns 15!

Today, 7 April 2021, the .eu TLD marks its fifteenth anniversary.

15 wonderful years have passed since .eu was launched publicly. Since then, EURid, the .eu registry manager, has significantly developed .eu, offering the TLD to residents of the EU and EEA as well as EU citizens around the world. In launching the .ею (Cyrillic script) and .ευ (Greek script) country code top-level domain names, and through the implementation of various solutions like DNSSEC and APEWS, EURid has created a safe, stable, credible, and multilingual European online extension.

Marc Van Wesemael, EURid’s General Manager, comments: “Today we celebrate fifteen years of providing great service to great stakeholders. With 3.6 million domain names registered, we continue to consolidate our operations, simplify processes, and add value to our domain name products. We are honored to have had the opportunity to serve this important extension as the managing registry and are excited to see what the coming years will bring.”

I'm surprised that each name doesn't force you to listen to the EU "national anthem" before you access the site and mandate forcing the EU flag in the corner.

They already ruined the Internet by forcing those stupid useless cookie banners that are equally annoying as they are unfit for purpose.

I might email them and suggest these improvements...

Fun fact: .eu price started at 10 euro and has been decreased to 4 euro after reaching some threshold, also redemption and trade fees have been dropped some time later. That's what happens when a TLD is run by an non-profit instead of a greedy corporation.

Agreed, it would be better if other registries operated in the same way. They are greedy in other ways though to make up for it. Pernicious.

Yeah I'm not saying eurid is great, just that the pricing is right.

Only 3.6 million domains registered in one of the worlds largest economic blocks. Most people would call that a failure.

Which also lost their citizens' .eu names. I wonder if those domain owners really saw this coming. For some, who invested heavily in building that domain traffic, it might be cause for their business going bust.

I'd be very interested to know just how many developed .eu names were dumped by UK businesses.

Not by them but by the registry deleting the names.

If I recall correctly, about 300k names or so

And I believe it was by not permitting them to be renewed by UK residents?

They lost control, so domains are gone. No reg, no renew, nothing

UK residents cannot currently legally own an .eu domain due to their residence, now outside eu.

There was a big business opportunity amidst this chaos, that might have been lost.

Transferring registration ownership of their domains to an EU-based firm that would hold them as their representative / proxy owner (can't rememberthe exact term right now), before Brexit become effective. This is sometimes done in ccTLDs and such.

Someone building this service and mailing all those 300k owners could have settled a very lucrative business for years to come.

These names are now in "suspended" status, and this period is extended to June 30, 2021.

"A domain name in the “SUSPENDED” status can no longer support any service (such as website and email), but may still be reinstated if registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria."

Trustee service.
The UK citizens can transfer the domain name to the EU based registrars s.a. 101domain etc.
