The latest viral moneygrab in crypto is here - emoji subdomains provided by a viral new site y.at.

- 🔑.y.at sold for $425,000 yesterday at the live auction.

- 🚀🌕.y.at also sold for $200,000, and many more 6 figure and 5 sales yesterday too - see https://destiny.y.at/

From their description:

"Yat lets you use emojis as your universal username and identity on the internet. Imagine being known as 🔥🐉.y.at or 🤖👻👑 instead of coffeequeen98 or [email protected]

By owning a Yat - let’s say 🌊🔱🌴 - it’s yours forever. You are the ~only~ one on earth who owns these emojis.

The possibilities are endless with Yat. You can receive payments, use it on your socials, and eventually much more. Your Yat can be used as a link like this: y.at/🌊🔱🌴 (click it to see it!) and automatically redirect visitors to any website you want."

My bunny resolved like seen:

e . mk / 🐰

But when as subdomain 🐰.e.mk then it resoles like xn--4o8h . e . mk

Long story short:

Emoji + Left of the dot = Puny code conversion
Emoji + Right of the dot = No puny code conversion

That's one big difference between Yats and traditional emoji domains.

So what is so special about these vs any other subdomain?
Just some marketing fluff?

So what is so special about these vs any other subdomain?

I mean in theory, and strictly speaking URL, you could use Emojis.com/🍍 just as you could use Y.at/🍍.

Speaking to what would make a Yat special opposed to an Emojis.com, is:
  • Yat is marketing, selling, and dev'ing an ecosystem around these URLs/Identities // Emojis.com is not.
  • Yat appears more focused on the crypto space, // where emojis.com greatest asset would be the front facing domain built around the stability of .com and its authority.
What I still don't fully understand, as I'm not a yatter, is the additional benefits. I mean,
@mobilespecialists can offer you an e.mk/🍍 sub domain, but it doesn't come with the Yat community, dev team, or the resources.

Similar to how you can join Frank (lindell) or you can join 45 (trump). You're buying into their network, just as folks did with myspace, facebook, and more so with twitter and the gray area aftermarket of twitter handles. Lindell/Trump are both leveraging their networks to see if that can create a social media community. Not that I'm a huge Yat believer, but I think Yat has just as much potential to be a success as Frank or 45, if not more potential of a chance to succeed primarily because the Yat folks seem more connected to the tech space.

Q: Why would you want a particular twitter subdomain?
A: It's not about the sub domain. It's about the @handle within the twitter community, and what Twitter can do for you. Not what twitter.com can do for you, but what the twitter community/ecosystem/tech within can do.

Q: Are any PayPal.me links desired?
A: IDK. As they issued subdomains for free, and operate as a different model. Nonetheless, the URL <PayPal.Me/Brad> is a payment address within the paypal.com community, which I assume a Yat will be deployed for similar use within the yat crypto space.

Just some marketing fluff?

I mean, one of the co-founders is <Twitter.com/FluffyPony @FluffyPony> and Y.at allegedly sold an emoji subdomain on April 1st for around $420,000. You tell me?

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Twitter and Paypal are going to be way, way, way more popular than Y.at ever will be.

I know those Twitter and Paypal handles can have value, but $400K...for an emoji subdomain.

IMO this is just combining fads that have been tried before into one shiny package.

Would you have ever imagined Binance or CoinBase having the potential to out-marketcap PayPal and other leading financial institutions?

I think many underestimated the crypto space. And these fads/shiny packages are popping up faster than ever, similar to the 2000 penny tech stock gold rush, just hoping that something will stick before regulation or public concern brings the whole thing crashing down.

Similar to 2000, with shady internet/tech startup companies (brothers in garages) raising unregulated money gave a bad image to volatile tech based penny stocks. But companies like Ebay/PayPal and Amazon, and other tech companies pulling through the bubble have grown into behemoths that threatened the old guard / american dream of mom and pop stores, and now is attempting to bring leach sucking hedge funds to their knees. The old guard could bring forth regulation to hinder/intervene in the crypto V. fintech battle, but will it be done before crypto grows into an unstoppable force? Has it already? Was crypto a planned (multi nation) deployment to combat growing concerns of unstable country currencies, and to better digitally track a world payment system? /rant.

I know those Twitter and Paypal handles can have value, but $400K...for an emoji subdomain.

Maybe it'll help to think/phrase it differently than a just a subdomain.

Crypto company + Key Emoji.
Crypto wallets use Keys to unlock.

Other companies could implement emojis PayPal.me/🔑 payment addresses or Twitter @🔑 emoji handles, but again, I don't think the subdomain, or just the handle is the final form here.

AgainX2, I don't think it was just about the sale of a subdomain. We could say, they sold an emoji email for $420,000 as well, and that may be just as accurate as they sold a subdomain. As email/subdomain usage doesn't appear to be the final form here.

NFT cave paintings? Since we're reversing to hieroglyphs, might as well take another step back.

I would say NFT farts, but they already have those. :)

I think this idea is doomed to fail as its prone to creating more headache than the initial headache it was aiming to solve (making crypto transactions easier)

but it can open the door for other methods of making crypto payments easier to become more mainstream. like .crypto or .eth domains.
what is there to stop unstoppable domains from adding emoji (or logos) to each .crypto domain so you can use the print of your logo as a QR code for accepting payments? nothing. probably will happen in near future so you can just print your logo on products or ads (or even in metaverse on your virtual assets) as both a domain and a wallet.

this is early days of the internet all over again, this time for decentralized web. a lot of early projects are going to fail so speculating on them is a high risk investment.

of course the amount of crypto wealth (eth was sub 10 dollars not that long ago!) makes these moves easier for early birds. I just find it weird that the sales are always reported in fiat. they are intertidally trying to create FOMO by reporting crypto sales in fiat only.

... as they sold a subdomain. As email/subdomain usage doesn't appear to be the final form here.

":spam: just sold for $425k" > pump up ambassadors to market/accelerate the Tari service/s. (for too long they're out of radar/popularity and now trying to escape the service/product death spiral)

With how much anything "NFT" and "Blockhain" is blowing up, just based on hype, marketing, and FOMO...now might be the time to cash in my beanie baby investments. ;)

Maybe I can digitize my beanie babies and sell them as 1 of 1 "art"...on the blockchain!

If you can sell NFT farts, anything is possible.

Brad

this supposedly-new digital art world is very similar to the old physical art world. what gives the artworks monetary value is fame above everything. (the pretentious art critics call it "the story" lol )

you can even sell farts IF you are famous enough..

Right!
A couple of years ago, a local painter guy who lives in a third world country, displayed a napkin in exhibition that he jizzed on and tried to sell it.
Then he got sued.

For the emoji stuff; I'm afraid of that we're trying to go back to hieroglyphs era.
Is the cycle completing itself? I hope not...

its not a cycle its a never ending loop. we're gonna repeat this every few years. stupid is cool and then its stupid again and then cool again.. depending on how much attention/money people can squeeze off of it.

Coming from a country where the minimum wage is 250$ per month (and many people don't even make that), I sometimes cringe at the expensive price of some of these digital goods get sold at :sour:
where you got this info? Austria is a rich country, and their minimum wage is 6X than what u said.

My prediction is that yat is actually the @ sign and they are going to push to get the ability to type it straight into the browser.

So you'll be able to type in @NamePros in your browser bar to go to namepros. I think this emoji thing is just a publicity stunt for what is to come. If they are really basing it off of just emojis, it is dumb and will be gone next year.

I have no idea how that would work in practice, or even in theory.

I have no idea who would even have the authority to sign off on that type of move.

It certainly is never going to work on standard root servers.

"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:

Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things."

- Douglas Adams

I fall into that last category, so I'll leave it to the youngsters.

When you have friends in high places (google) and more money than any industry in existence, they can do just about anything.

Even if they just did it for chrome (+ android...also google), then apple, you'd have most of the market. Just map the unique @ addresses to IPs or even domains. It wouldn't be a full replacement to domains, but maybe your unique marketing tag in some respect. Maybe it will start as a redirect, and then morph into an adopted standard someday. If I were them, I would just start with a visual browser mask in the url bar and when the user clicks on it, it will show them the "boring" old domain name url string.

I too hope not, but I'll be standing in line when they start offering text tags. But emojis...I'll pass.

If they do start dishing out tags, I'll buy up as many great ones as possible. Because if there was ever a dot com "parallel" (not sure it will ever be intended as a true replacement), but we can all guess that, if created, it will be a hybrid of twitter handles and domains which everyone is familiar with. Both the Twitter handles and domains have proven to be worth a lot, so a hybrid of the two should result in similar values.

I remember when the browser bar was a sacred place that only allowed the http(s):// address. Then it all changed when browsers let you use it as a search bar. What's next? If I were to put money on anything, it would be this being some type of alternative use for the browser bar.

For everything that that catches on, hundreds or thousands of stupid "innovative" ideas end up crashing.

It is normally because it doesn't live up to the hype and fails to make people's lives better or more efficient.

People just remember the handful that work out.

just dug a bit deeper and you are correct - hand-registering a yat is credit card only, but yesterdays big discord auction accepted stablecoins.

seems they are paying celebrities also. if only useful projects had as good marketing as these guys

My final prediction...

Since they are including celebrities that use 5+ different platforms, I bet they'll use this as some type of launch pad for your brand. Using Common as an example celebrity, I predict the end result will be that you type in @common and you get a customized portfolio launch pad that includes feeds from:

Twitter (https://twitter.com/Common)
Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/common/)
Next Album (http://found.ee/Common_ABRPart1)
Record Label & Merch (thinkcommon.com)
YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/c/thinkcommon)
Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/thinkcommon/)
Tour Dates
News
Etc

It would be a solution that brings organization to the chaos that exists from the multiple technologies that seem to stick. If his twitter feed just points to his @common, he doesn't need to link to everything. If you click on Common's current yat address it just redirects to his ".com" domain, which further proves that this will either be a redirect technology, or better yet, a portfolio type of technology for your brand.

So my prediction would not be a domain replacement, but an organization/portfolio/brand layer above your domain name. I'd say it would be like an even easier-to-use squarespace-type of portfolio tool mixed with a redirect capability at the browser level when typing in @ in the browser bar or whatever their symbol may be.
