The domain name ChicagoPizza.com sold on GoDaddy yesterday for $9,400 USD, What are your thoughts on this domain name?

The domain name was registered back in 1998 and didn’t resolve for many years according to Achrive.org historical records, It was then parked at GoDaddy CashParking for a number of years and now has dropped and been auctioned on GoDaddy for $9,400 USD.

What is Chicago Pizza or Chicago Style Pizza – I do love myself a slice of deep-dish pizza – Do you?

Chicago-style pizza is pizza prepared according to several different styles developed in Chicago. The most famous is the deep-dish pizza. The pan in which it is baked gives the pizza its characteristically high edge which provides ample space for large amounts of cheese and a chunky tomato sauce. Chicago-style pizza may be prepared in deep-dish style and as a stuffed pizza

The domain name ChicagoStylePizza.com is already taken too before anyone heads on over to check it out, registered back in 1997 owned by The Malnati Organization

So what do you think was $9,400 USD a good buy?

I think it was and there are a number of companies who could take advantage of this great name, it will be interesting to see who acquired on GoDaddy Auctions, I suspect a domain name investor not an end-user but we will know in due course – Congrats to the buyer, I think you got a great name with nice opportunity in for future resale.

Hi

for city residents...no such thing as chicago pizza or chicago style pizza

to us, it's just pizza and we all have our preferred pizza joints

where some like thin crust, and some like deep dish

imo...

you are targeting every pizza shop in the Chicago area generic geo domains are the best you never run out of end users.

Hi

every pizza place in chicago, doesn't want to be chicagopizza.com

as so many of them, have their own identity, and followers, like italian fiesta or fox's pizza
and that's not including the franchises like dominos, pizzahut, etc

maybe a name like that would be good for frozen pizza brand, but for individual mom & pop stores, it would be a hard sell.

imo...

Hey “ChicagoPizza” aligns with even “ItalianPizza” ...I suppose it’s only more Americanized somewhat ...If I had to pick, it would be a tough choice 🤤 I was always a burger person 😅

i see your point but i always saw it as a way to be the one and only in your field having a generic name redirect to your brand name website not sure if i explained that right i have sold few domains this way

You reminded of the days of going to Godfathers Pizza and getting the 5 pounder (had over a pound of cheese and TONS of ingredients). Truly the best chain pizza I have ever eaten...wish I had one now!

Hi

for redirecting, i can agree with that.

i have sold a few chicago .com names including
chicagoescort, insurancechicago, chicagorealestateattorney

also own chicagodrivingschool.com

There is a chain called Chicago Pizza, here in Indiana.

Hi

now, they might have more use for it.

being out of state, eliminates chitown competition
while, the name can solicit anticipation, of what we get locally.

but the taste, will dictate the reviews.

imo..

It is a very fair price for a domain with almost endless potential end users both for the GEO (Pizza places in Chicago) and the style in many other locations (Chicago Style).

I think it will easily sell for 5 figures to an end user. I would be a buyer more in the mid $X,XXX range personally. I don't think at near $10K there is really enough expected margin IMO.

Actually, the chain I am thinking about is called Chicago’s Pizza, and they are located online at chicagospizza dot com. 19 pizza restaurants in Indiana. So maybe approach them as a defensive registration/purchase. Still some possibility they would want that domain. Certainly you would get some type in traffic because of them.

It's an excellent domain and one I was personally looking to acquire. I set a pretty high budget of $6,000, but was outbid at the last minute. To be honest, domains like this are quite rare and rarely hit the market. When they do, they're a fury of people bidding on it. At the end of all of the madness, pizza is the main go-to for most. Chicago pizza is on an entirely different level, especially the infamous deep dish pizza.

There are several extensions registered and thousands of domains sharing the phrase 'chicagopizza' and in various extensions. For me, this domain is very powerful and worth every penny. My main regret was not bidding more. Whoever won the domain had deep pockets and had no interest in letting a domain like this slip out of their hands. A domain like this would make an excellent addition to a Chicago pizza restaurant. #exactmatch #catagorykiller #directtypeintraffic

Hi

some observations:

chicagopizza.com / net and org are all parked

chicagostylepizza.com > doesn't resolve
chicagostylepizza.net > Michigan Pizza location

if other domainers were not willing to bid higher, then they probably decided that the "potential ROI" for that domain, would not be high enough to risk investing more..
.
at that closing sale price, along with other extensions not being "end-used",
there may not be much demand or desire to acquire it, especially if end-user price, is too high.

imo...

That domain didn't sell @ Godaddy Auction, the owner renewed domain ... last moment (testing $value...for years). The GD Auction ToS: domain can be renewed > 45th day. The Auction is null/canceled and your refund will go to your cc/paypal/bank.

Regards

You sure about that? And curious how you came to this conclusion, are you basing this off of the new 2031 expiration date?

Comparing WHOIS Entries:

to

upload_2021-3-21_14-11-57.png

...

Just curious, which "domain owner" is Afternic, LLC representing here in the WHOIS details?

Is Afternic holding the domain for their long time customer CARUTHERS ASSOCIATES who paid GoDaddy hundreds of dollars over the years in renewal fees for ChicagoPizza.com? Or is Afternic, LLC holding the domain on behalf of the incoming domain owner (eg GoDaddys buyer) who allegedly bought the domain for $9,400 at GoDaddy expired auction?

Curious how a a registrar decides when and how to alter WHOIS details. As if Afternic LLC really is holding the domain on behalf of CARUTHERS ASSOCIATES, I would hope the GoDaddy UI allows that user to quickly renew without being exploited or price gouged.
