SAV.com Launches New Drop Catching Service With No Backorder Fees
https://www.dnjournal.com/archive/lowdown/2020/dailyposts/20201026.htm

The no fees part great but...

The part I like is that when there is more than one bidder it goes to marketplace and anyone can bid regardless of if you backordered the domain or not.

Highest bidder wins... Period!

That would be “Google domains”

longest beta in the history of betas?

I recently backordered about 15 names with them and was surprised to see that, in addition to not catching a single name (which I may understand, due to the fierce competition in the industry), four of the names dropped and I was able to hand-register three of them.

So, my question would be: Was that a glitch on their system or does it mean they aren’t putting any effort in catching names, but just using the announcement for promotion, without any basis?

I opened an account with them recently after I saw the “news” on DNJournal.

It is common for backorders to occur tens of minutes or even hours later, with many registrars. In fact several don't even start their backorders in the drop window or very late in that. Backorders are not drop catch.

Furthermore, whoever fires their connections fast will ask for tens of dollars in return for the backorder being successful.

Given the fact that it's a no-cost backorder service, you can kind of figure out it has a low priority.

Google Domains is in beta forever LoL :)

With Sav... Talk about success catch % rate!

But free; and that’s what’s different. Good luck,

I don't think SAV will ever be competitive in the drop catch market unless they invest heavily in their infrastructure.

But this is unfair to all the people who did their homework and put in the effort to backorder only to be taken by someone with the highest budget

While I am fairly unskilled in picking diamonds from a shitpile and rely on number of bid to shortlist, I still think it is unfair to public auction off a backordered name.

But of course, it is not in best of the interest of the drop catching service.

How so?
If you plan on spending $100 for the domain and the auction is closed you are maybe the highest bidder.

Auction is open and other people come in and bid up to $1000

Drop catch service makes $900 more

All in all it's bad for the domain investor but a boom for the auction house.

Being an investor myself I consider time as money.
I personally prefer to gop in, place my bid and not have to worry about anything else.

So you will have two types of domainer, some like you and some with bigger budgets that just prefer to swoop in and buy what they want.

In the end the most profitable drop catch service will be the one that is the most open, that only makes mathematical sense.
I understand that is controversial but nonetheless profitable for the service.

It's likely that you were the only person to backorder and therefore, the catches were ultra low priority to them (at least the ones which dropped afterwards).

Money talks.

You pretty much get what you pay for.

I just signed up with sav.com for their backordering. I couldn't figure out how to backorder anything. I couldn't figure out if the backorder was public or hidden. I got through approving my paypal account, and I got a default backordering code. What else do I have to do to get started with backordering. Perhaps someone could explain the steps required to place a backorder.

Go to "my backorders" and there you will see a field "add backorder"

If you are the only who backordered, you win (not public). If more people backordered, yes public

It should be in "Add backorder" but it says you have to add a valid payment method and auctions username must be set in your account

I forgot that step :xf.smile:

I have already added paypal and there is no way to change the assigned username. But I have no way to add any backorders.

I've just sent this email to [email protected]....

I've setup PayPal as my payment method and I cannot change the assigned Auctions Username: x_x_xxxxxx and I have no idea how to give you the last for digits of my email address using paypal username, xxxxx@xxxxxxxxxx.com, unless that is ".com". So please tell me what else I have to do to be able to add backorders. Because as it looks now. I have no option to add backorders. To me, it looks like a bug.

If you already have an actions username, then, I don't think there is a need to change it

when I registered, there was no paypal option so I added a card and It worked

So it looks to me that this is a bug. I'm not going to add my credit card when, the paypal option automatically selected my credit card for paypal payments without ever allowing to pay with my paypal balance. It's supposed to be a backup payment method for when there is no money in my paypal account.

I would be happy to take a look at that for you. Can you DM me your Sav account's email address?
