Epik Fights PayPal

Just read that.

Apparently Epik lost Paypal. It might seem like a blow to Rob's business but I lost PP years ago and went 100% crypto. Best thing actually, I no longer was under the thumb of their monopoly and never again had a reversal.

UPDATE: I just spoke with Rob for a minute. He's very excited to get the message out about tyranny of Paypal. He's got a LOT more to the story on what happened. Maybe he'll post about it blog it.

Realistically Paypal is a very evil company. They are a Monopoly that has been the gatekeeper of payments online for a very long time. They set fees high, they screw over sellers, and they will lock your account for the slightest of violations potentially destroying a business.

Thankfully the past years we are seeing a rise in crypto currency and it is breaking their hold. I expect Paypal to be a small percentage of their size in the next 10 years as crypto replaces their services as an unnecessary middleman.

I look forward to the fight of Epik against Paypal. May his victory be swift and complete.

I also highly recommend if you have not tried Epik as your registrar that you do so asap. Fantastic service imho.

Thank you.

It was the other way around. Ebay bought PayPal.

Yeah, my memory on that wasn't 100% and I didn't bother to fact-check it.

Assume you know they split again too. Interesting enough PP worth $230B and Ebay worth only $37B. So we know who is the more powerful of the two. Ebay sucks now that Amazon is a better marketplace. Eventually Paypal will lose everything to crypto. If you want to short a stock. PYPL is my pick.

first PayPal just announced crypto support so none of what u said really applies... and pp just got itself an instant injection of millions new accounts for this crypto news.

What are you on about? Paypal entering crypto market is proof they know where the future lies. It's like when newspapers finally created websites. Also PP market cap has dropped $15B since the announcement. Not exactly market enthusiasm for the news. And you have it wrong that PP is getting millions of new accounts. It's Bitcoin that's getting access to millions of new users. No one is joining Paypal to use Crypto.

Curious who doesnt use Paypal?

I do not. They permanently limited my account without explanation so now I am 100% crypto and my earnings are just as good. Plus I NEVER have reversals.

Do you use crypto-based escrows when selling names or do buyers confidently deposit into your wallet first?

Yes they do, but most (or all) other registrars have shown a willingness to take action against hateful domains or sites.

You may be interested in this Joe. There are several resources being published shortly, so we can finally put this myth to bed. You seem to be sincere in wanting to learn more though, so I am happy to oblige.

As per our prior share, we had already received notice "off the record" that PayPal had deplatformed Epik, because the SPLC wanted people to believe we were the registrar for many of the top organizations on their hate watch list. In fact, PayPal's relationship with the SPLC as a guiding force has been well documented, as it has been the significant theme of their CEO Dan Schulman's interviews, comments, and focus points since March. You may not be aware of this, but the SPLC piece originally crafted against Epik and Rob Monster, was a significant anchor for Wikipedia - for a page literally setup and maintained by one of their own staff members. Think about that! It was then used to guide the construction of dozens of other high level pieces, to formulate the most damaging profile of Epik anyone could imagine. Our CEO though has walked through this fire for 24 months, focused every day on lifting those up in front of him, without ever backing down from those who serve to destroy the lives of others.

In an attempt to rectify this, I reached out to an SPLC surrogate, who was kind enough to provide me with a map of the top organizations who they considered to be on their list of leading hate groups. My expectation is that the list will be published before the end of today. The message that came with it, was literally an encouragement to do everything we could to ban, restrict, limit, harm, or reduce everyone listed upon it, and to win "at all costs". The update I received last night, indicated great and massive fear that incriminating videos related to a political candidate were soon to surface. They are terrified of the hosting companies and resilient service providers who may decide to not censor it from the public.

I would ask you to keep in mind that more than 1500 attack pieces against Epik have been manufactured, labeling us as a safe haven for hate since 2018. The truth though, is that of the 354 websites and organizations listed on the SPLC hit list for termination and service disruption, GoDaddy has 64 of them, Public Internet Registry (PIR) has a whopping 138, Network Solutions has 14, Tucows has 16, Namecheap has 12, and Dreamhost has 11. GoDaddy has Breitbart.com, and many other organizations designated as "far right" in the past, as well as dozens of companies that even sell Nazi merchandise to this very day. Cloudflare provides support and protection to 72 of the worst of them, and GoDaddy actively hosts 54 - on top of the many additional domains for which they provide registrar services. Plus most collect money and some form of premium for direct privacy services to protect their valued customers from the heat.

The irony here is pretty simple - the SPLC designated Epik as a hate group because of its "choice and propensity to offer registrar services to far right organizations". Every single PayPal article generated over the last three days has referenced it repeatedly. But of the 354 organizations contained within the SPLC list, Epik has the least of any major registrar. It only took five singular entries to earn the designation of King of all Online Hate. The greater irony: we are also on that list, because of the manufactured idea that we are the registrar for hate sites, and so the cycle continues.

Yet no other registrar in the world can be found in its ranks.

What do you think it has been like for Rob Monster, as even his neighbors have had propaganda stuffed in their mailboxes stating that he is the protector of all Nazis in America? Some of the groups that GoDaddy and others still protect, are far beyond more abhorrent and horrific than anything I've ever witnessed at Epik. I also still can't find the article anywhere that condemns Network Solutions (or others) for maintaining support to this very day for the kkk.com.

In terms of motivation, it is very simple. They are positioning GoDaddy as a single source monopoly, and Epik is a threat due to our innovation and our commitment to our amazing customers. Many of the alternative registrars in the marketplace are simply strategic proxies, positioned in a timeline for eventual absorption, as these individuals truly think long term in their processes. You can reduce this to conspiracy theories and tin hat concepts all you like, but the numbers don't lie. Neither does the published rationale and logic of SPLC, Google, Wikimedia, Wikipedia, and others, for why they have decided that Epik doesn't make the grade. This again is perpetual false accusations of racism, to fulfill a political and capitalistic game plan. They are so arrogant in their execution, they can literally prop up a domain name like officialproudboys.com with hate, transfer it to Epik on October 21st, and then use it as a headline on October 23rd to attack us. You should all consider that fact alone, when reading the anti-Epik rants here.

I wouldn't trade the 70 pages of positive reviews and testimonials our customers have past submitted for any other position or company in this industry. We get more love, more likes, more positive feedback, and more satisfied customers in a week, than behemoths like GoDaddy can record in a year. It is an honor to serve our customers each and every day. I would though strongly encourage those who want to stand on their pedestals, and continue to denounce our ethics and integrity for personal gain, to find a better use of their time.

This is what unchecked monopoly abuse looks like. Without Epik, it only gets worse from here.

It depends. But I have a high public reputation I can rely on. I've never transferred a domain without either being paid first or using escrow.

To be honest I would NEVER accept Paypal for a domain. Very easy to reverse the payment up to 6 months afterwards and nearly impossible for me to get the domain back. When PP did the 6 months, that's when I stopped using them. Before that I could do DNS change for 2 months then transfer domain once it was past reversal period. That no longer is viable.

Paypal offers you no protections as a domain seller.

EDIT:
Finally the reply I was waiting for.

As everyone can see, this is really Godaddy killing a competitor, or at least attempting to do so.

Conservative domains are being branded as hate-speech site. And even if true that the #1 "hate-speech" site is at Epik, SO WHAT. They should not be involved in censoring. Why shouldn't Paypal allow sites like Daily Stormer to accept their payments? There is absolutely no law against what they do. Internet companies are losing neutrality by making censorship decisions. Today it's Nazi' sites. Tomorrow it's sites that support Trump. And the next day it's sites that question any government action.

I'm personally appauled that Godaddy has influenced Paypal to remove Epik because they have a site like Daily Stormer as a client. Since when do we accept the cancelling of a company for the business clients they have?

Imagine if AT&T cancelled your phone contract because it heard you say "Nazi" into the phone. Your phone is listening to you ALL THE TIME. And before you say, well that's impossible, NO IT IS NOT.

Who Epik does business with is NONE OF PAYPAL'S business.

What? This is literally leaving them to die;
Paypal is a monopolistic in an of itself like GD.
cant just assume epik wrong based conjecture or like them or not.. Why i tagged both Rob.

It’s coordinated effort to take out the “little guy”
This most messed up “cancel culture” seen yet
Feel for Rob, and know he has plan get thru
Epik is not in direct competition with PayPal as they both offer very abstract services. It seems Epik violated one of it's policies. And we all know how PayPal take their policies serious. If I was epik I wouldn't fight this. There's already too much bad press from time in memorial. They probably will lost some customers because of this.

I think Rob should desist from making business conflicts a personal feud something and start issuing professional press statement and not rant blog posts..

By the way. I still use epik though. Because they serve me well.

"A Mashable source "close to the situation" suggested that PayPal's action may be over Epik's digital currency, Masterbucks, that is used to pay for domain services and can be exchanged for U.S. dollars."

Haha, nice marketing stunt... not. PayPal is as scared of mastebucks as Walmart is scared of a lemonade stand.

is that official? has anyone been notified by Epik?

No. Not official. Noticed how Robert does take the effort to continuesly debate with @jberryhill but lacks the decency to inform their own customers?

Another client reporting failed autorenewals, something I addressed in the other thread, no reaction at all. It's pathetic from a customer support point of view.

I'm on no one's side but my own. Epik is performing sub par at the moment. It should be about businesses, not some kindergarden fight.

UC30; now this. Come on, jberry!

What is UC30?

Do you mean BC30.com?

Speaking of which, perhaps somebody should remind Epik their subsequent lawsuit after losing a UDRP for BC30.com was dismissed by the Seattle District Court, and as such Epik is required to relinquish BC30.com to the UDRP winner.

How so?

Epik needs Paypal

Paypal does not need Epik

it can set precedent.

Dropping a partner over decade work with over politics is a poor business decision.

This could push other registrars to be even more in control of their pay processor system.
Paypal has too much; able just cut you off that

Their reasons were dubious, lacked context and they have yet to comment other than post about “cancel culture”. Paypal many clients; hurt epik may substantial let’s middle ground, not lawsuits.

I agree. They should work together and in a perfect world they would. I still like rob. But don't like the direction they're heading business wise.

In my opinion it's them playing a dangerous game that will hurt their company a lot if they don't alter the course they're heading.

It's not just the PayPal issue. It's the verbiage they're using. It's all worded quite clever, all high and mighty, but ment to escalate rather than unite.

What happened to 'turn the other cheek'?

I wanted them to fight it out of principle:

You wanted them to fight a previous customer of theirs? Going as far to make statements threatening an attempt to invalidate the former customers trademark?

Silly Samer, that's the wrong kind of legendary service. I'd hate to be one of those "supporters" who advised Rob to "fight" this one out; true supporters should know better.

And by extension it will hurt domainers, listing a domain for sale on epik now, all of a sudden, is an unnecessary gamble. Not only the potential buyer cannot use paypal to purchase the domain, but also they can read all kinds of stuff about epik when they decide to research the company... Fortunately they still have the afternic fast-transfer connection (but for how long?).

They thought it was fight worth fighting protect
and applaud them; tried defend right to BC30.

went down fighting; tried defend BC30; respect
Even if they disagree with the court’s decision; respect them more for trying than giving up.

Not entirely.

Epik filed. Then, didn't follow through.

By default, the case was then dismissed.

Why does Epik/Rob still possess the domain? It's almost as if Epik is awaiting an ICANN complaint to force their hand...

Exactly.
Just finished removing all the domains I had for sale on Epik's landers just a few minutes ago.
