Type of Contest: App Logo/Icon Contest

Prize: USD 10 + USD 60 bonus via Paypal

Contest End Date & Time: October 20 at 00:00 GMT

Size Requirements: Vector (scalability is a requirement)

Color Requirements: No particular requirements at this point, though keep it within reasonable limits. Nothing too playful.

General Requirements: This contest is for an app icon for an RSS reader application.

The name will reference a "dovecote" or "carriere-pigeon loft", so a suggested theme could (not required, by any means) incorporate a stylised dovecote or also the typical RSS logo (emphasis on incorporate here, the logo should not be just the Nth version of the RSS logo).

Again, that is just a possible suggestion, no requirement, please let your creativity roam freely. What's important is that it incorporates the meaning of news/RSS in one way or another. That can be via mentioned suggestions or something completely different.

The icon/logo should follow a somewhat modern style and not be too playful. Again, creativity is more than welcome, please just keep in mind the primary use will be as an app icon, so it should definitely be suitable for that and should follow also Apple's and Google's guidelines.

Additional Information: This generally is a $70 contest. The $10/$60 split is due to the rule that I have to choose a winner even if no entry is to my liking. In that case the closest entry will be selected and the fixed amount of $10 paid and we share the rights to the art work 50/50 and agree that neither of us is using it further. The overall compensation is budgeted with $70 however, so if an entry is submitted which I intend to use please be assured the $70 will be paid in full.

Thanks, I like the combination of the RSS symbol with the letter, however the name is not "dovecote" and that would be also difficult to use as an icon.

I have to stress that part again

Again, creativity is more than welcome, please just keep in mind the primary use will be as an app icon, so it should definitely be suitable for that and should follow also Apple's and Google's guidelines.

I don't mind something of a traditional logo, but it definitely has to fit into a rectangular shape as well.

Thanks for the revision, though that's really rather a variation of the RSS symbol, particularly because the E is in no context.

Thanks, that is getting closer to an icon, but I am not sure about the bird concept to be honest. It is rather similar to Twitter (don't want a trademark violation in that context) and I am not sure if we should focus so much on "a bird".

As I mentioned, the stylised dovecote is only a possible idea not a hard requirement. Essentially the icon should communicate that it is about a news/RSS hub and in this context an allusion to the name is a possibility.

What about this?
I made it in Powerpoint quickly but can convert to svg if you want.
A pigeon showing something or trying to draw attention to something.
Colors can be changed.

Thanks everyone
  • #11: Reminds me more of a chat application (WhatsApp).
  • #12: Can we get away from the pigeon analogies? :) It's more about mentioned central hub where the dovecote reference comes in. The pigeons would then be rather the invidual RSS feeds. Not saying the concept "pigeon" is a complete no-go, but so far there was a bit too much focus on it. Also, the icon reminded me of a rooster.
  • #13: Thanks, but that's really just aforementioned variation of the RSS symbol.

Thanks, though it still is very close to the generic RSS symbol (just mirrored) and I am not immediately recognising the connection to a news hub, maybe you can elaborate on your thoughts.

Thanks, though that is probably not so much the style I'd look for. With the gradient and the overall styling it has a bit of a 90s/2000s touch and reminds me of AT&T or some satellite company (see the modern bit in my original posting please) and not so much of news or RSS.

From the three designs you have submitted so far the second one was probably closest. The first one was not bad but simply way too much a direct copy of the RSS symbol (which I addressed in the requirements). The RSS symbol is not a complete no-go and incorporating it (like @kraman.157 did) definitely is an option, but as I mentioned in the original posting that should be an incorporation not just the RSS symbol on its own with a visual whoosh.

Maybe you could follow the style of the second submission and give it a bit more of a character and a subtle but distinct reference to a news reader.

Thanks once more.

@logoexpert, not bad though a bit generic to be honest (could be stock images too). Could you refine them a bit and add a bit more character?

One more feedback, the icon does not necessarily have to be only white :)
