I know that there is a lot of domain registration with .io extension and there is no comparison from volume point of view.

However, .io is “Indian ocean” Cctld and .page is generic.

I had a look at insurance.io which is redirected to a site. There is a proper business running with insurance.page and they have several branches. I assume they are paying premium renewal fees.

I think if I have to choose between business.io or business.page, I will go for business.page as a company as I am not based in Indian Ocean.

I understand Google treating .io as generic nowadays but still I don’t want to run business on that extension.

What would you choose between those two for exact keyword if you run a company not in Indian Ocean region?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

If they treat it as generic I can't see a reason based on that not to use .io though there may be other reasons not to...?

I personally don't like either extension but unfortunately I think that .page is very unprofessional sounding. At least there are known websites on .io.

There are 4.4 million results for .page
and 254 million results for .io

before .page came, I would have preferred .IO, but not .page seems a better choice for developed websites. Indeed .io domains have more value than .page because they're aged, short, more tech-savvy! But for novice website visitors "io" seems meaningless extension - for them one should use .page, .site, .app, etc.

Yes, people are thinking io as input / output and I find it strange. This. io reminds me of. ws when people think it refers to ws=website.

There are thousands of extensions. I fail to really see what .puts page ahead of the endless other similar extensions.

I am not a major fan of .IO, but at least you can point to solid sales and usage.

It seems like an odd comparison because there is really no correlation between the two extensions.

1. buy pa.ge
2. sell subdomains like insurance.pa.ge

or

1. in the new round of new gtlds, apply for .iowe or .inputoutput
2. start competing with .io

the .io is assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory, But it's administered by the Internet Computer Bureau, a domain name registry company based in the United Kingdom, So physically .IO is Based in the UK

TECH STARTUPS LOVE TO USE .IO DOMAINS, cuz I/O means input/output.

Funny fact that's there is only one reported sale of .page on namebio. So it's shame to compare .io with .page

I was ;)

It is like watching Hollywood movie about aliens and spectators discussing how something in the movie is too unnatural or unreal )))

As I mentioned, volumewise. io is performing much better. I was just saying if I run e.g insurance company, I would rather use insurance.page than insurance.io if I have to choose between those two. It is personal preference for me. Maybe you will prefer. io.

One thing I notice is. page control premium keywords with premium renewal fees. If not, there may be more movements in sales. I am prepared to buy loan.page for low x,xxx or more if the renewal fees is $10 per year. After few years of inactivity in domaining, I was amazed to see so many. io domains.

Indeed, .io has the advantage of being known by the average geek now.

Yes, I agreed. But majority of customers are not geeks and they might be the same as me when they see. io, what the heck it is. I had to research a bit about. io when I saw it first time. I am more used to domain extensions than average customers as I have 500-600 domains with different extensions.

On a serious note, there is one reason I'd never build a business on .io:

The islands have been forcefully and deceitfully vacated from the indigenous people and .io directly and indirectly benefit those that have done this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_the_Chagossians

Hopefully, they prevail and take back their land and extension.

Talking of profiting, tell your government (USA) to stop renting the land then! :nailbiting:

Further digging reveals no evidence that .io profits ever have gone to the UK government according to them.

I would never buy a .com for similar reasons. I hope they get their homeland back!

There is a slight flaw in your understanding of how google treats urls.
A ccTLD is just one of various ways to tell google that it is a country specific website.
But it doesn't stop the google from recognizing the site in other countries.

Google doesn't treat any TLD specially so .io or .page or .com will have similar view on google eyes if you are not telling google specifically that you are using IO to target IO region

You can even use .io to target a totally different country if you want.

Instead of worry what google will think, I would worry about how my brand name looks like when read with the extension.

Because unlike a brand that you own with all the extensions, think apple.com, apple.co.uk, apple.ca, if you own a single extention that is not .com, you will be wise to brand your website with the TLD, specially if .com is owned by someone else.

SO you need to think, does tech.io makes a better brand or tech.page makes a better brand. You can apply the radio test
