Nice to see that .app is in the top 10 gtlds now according to ntldstats.com.

Gtlds in general have been a real blood bath though, the number of drops... 👀

The questions also is how are people paying premiums on these.

Strangely ntldstats.com's own website is out of order ? Where did you read that...
I'm a bit confused. The list is on https://ntldstats.com/tld

The months from December 2020 to May 2021 should be quite interesting for .ICU. The .APP hasn't been a great success in terms of development.

What, in your opinion, equates to great success in terms of development? Not implying anything, just curious what your benchmark is.

Over 25% natural usage (sites developed on the TLD) and significant inbound redirects from other TLDs. PPC and sales landers are always going to be present in most TLDs but it is the natural development that matters. This is because people see sites being developed on the TLD and then decide to develop sites and tell others about the TLD. Thes are the Mom and Pop operations and they are far more important than big brand owners using a TLD.

From the July TLD website IP survey of 239 million domain names, the .APP results were 56.34% on known PPC parking pages, 3% were on sale, 7.22% were on known holding pages, 1.16% were on redirect and 12.81% had no site. That's just on website IP data responses. A usage survey analyses the website usage but the website IP survey is used to reduce the number of sites to be surveyed.

Interesting.

Seems a lot could be overlooked using just a % breakdown.

What about absolute number of sites developed relative to time available? And perhaps a quality ranking based on traffic (alexa 1m), venture $ raised, public company usage? And maybe even add in diversity of end-users based on geo and industry?

How many % natural usage is it for .COM?
It varies by country but on samples, it is about 30%. Some of the ccTLDs are actually higher but that's due to the highly geographically concentrated markets and the state of the ccTLD country's economy.

The ones not included in those %s above are the ones that would have to be surveyed.

I'd have to go back through historical surveys or run a new survey this month.

And perhaps a quality ranking based on traffic (alexa 1m), venture $ raised, public company usage?
Alexa, as a metric, is highly misleading. The VC $s and public company usage can also be misleading since they are investing in to the company rather than the TLD.

The gold standard is community (SMEs/bloggers etc) adoption. Once they start using it, the TLD becomes popular and renewal rates stabilise. What you don't want to see, as a registry, is a kind of sawtooth pattern (new registration spikes followed just over a year later by dumps) where registrars using discounting to drive registrations have low renewal rates.

And maybe even add in diversity of end-users based on geo and industry?
That can be done on the basis of IP address (resolution is not good due to super hosters like Godaddy that span countries), languages used on the websites and other text that can be found on the websites. That is a much harder problem than determining the use of a domain name (active/PPC/sales/redirect etc).

I added a landing page to https://encyclopedia.app

Going to attempt to build up brand authority and run auctions on the domain. If I dont reach the desired target of +$25k I will attempt to build out a p2p blockchain based encyclopedia webapp.

Encyclopedia.com has had two exits, and everipedia has raised $30million, so definitely opportunity within the information indexing space.
