discuss Is calling a good idea in outbound?

After having dropped a mail, is following up with some of the leads (say you only email 5 - 10 leads per domain name) which are highly thought-through, targeted, and written a very personalized email, a good idea?

I have read posts from people saying that it has worked for some of them but not sure about the success rate. I understand that there are a number of questions and factors that come up here like:

1) Did you drop the email first and then call up as a follow up OR do you directly call-up?
2) Was the number from the same country?
3) What is the time when you call?
4) The domain name that you are selling?
5) Pricing and negotiation

Having said all this, and there might be n number of factors whether calling works for one versus not. However, in general, when it comes to calling and selling your domain names to highly targeted leads, does it make sense to carry out such an experiment especially given the time when people are working from home?

While I do realize that emails are a better way to sell, and nothing like it, there were a couple of responses in my previous post bringing out this method of pitching the domain name to prospects.

I mean, given the way big brokers conduct deals, it looks like email wouldn't be the only method used in such deals. There would be discussions, meetings maybe, and a number of calls before the buyer press the Buy Now and transfers the funds.

Have you ever tried it in any stage of the negotiation process as well? Say after the buyer confirms the sale but doesn't process the payment or as a means of direct reach out?

Kindly share your experience, views or thoughts around the same. If it is seen in fair light, I may go ahead and try it out, and later share the results on the forum.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The top brokers are dealing with much higher quality domains than you are likely dealing with. With those type of assets targeted outbound can make sense, though many of those brokers also have existing connections as well.

If you are just spamming mediocre or bad domains, I doubt phone calls are going to be all that effective. The average person is not going to be receptive to giving money to some random cold caller for a domain name.

Cold callers are the lowest scum of the earth. imo.

Negotiating by phone can work. Send an email and schedule a meeting.

I think calling should only happen if your prospective buyer requests it. You should certainly not do cold calling.

I made a living from cold calling when I was younger :xf.wink:

Being hung up on, verbally abused and threatened was just a typical day......

As people have already said would not recommend doing it with domains, thought about it when I first started getting into this but decided it would not be worth the hassle.....

Lol, yeah that's a hard job. But I reckon you were working for a company that got their leads in an appropriate way. There are a lot of loopholes but it doesn't compare to domainers picking up the phone trying to flog some names.

I block all numbers from abroad to be honest. Just whitelist my contacts. If someone really needs to talk to me and they have something interesting to say their email will most probably get past my spam filter :)

Cold call if:

A company has BestWidgets.com and you are offering Widgets.com.

Do not call if:

A company has Widgets.com and you have BestWidgets.com.

Cold calling is a bad idea.
I don't answer my phone unless it is a number I know.
Most people these days let voicemail screen calls.

Yep. I will never answer the phone from a number (or at least area code) that I am not familiar with. If something is that important the person can leave a voicemail.

I can't remember the last time an unsolicited call provided any value.

Sure. I agree and I hear you. But even for smaller deals, if you can call the right person and close it, doesn't it look doable?

Sure. Ya in that order. Schedule, get consent, call and sell.

Makes sense. But what did you market earlier. Maybe there is some learning from that experience. You should create a thread on cold calling, pitch, conversion rates, product, stats etc. Could be extremely valuable.

The reason I started working online was so that I don't have to talk to clients.
I prefer inbounds and letting the broker handle everything lol

But did you initially start off with outbound?
Or was it always inbound?

Not online, but I started my career in sales. While I was good at it, I felt like shit. And decided I don't want to have to talk to client, so I started developing websites, did PPC etc where I was never working with consumers directly.

If I invest in Big Names (Single word high value names) which I eventually plan to, as I trade up my shit domains , and gain more experience, I will do some networking to make sales.

Ya that;s how brokers do it, it seems!
They know people who know people!

There is a huge difference between being cold called personally (which we all are allergic to) and being cold called as a business. Businesses are being cold called all the time and it's not that unusual. You probably want to sell your domain to a business, not an individual...

So once you get past the gatekeeper, what do you say to the decision makers? The best brokers also do cold calling, so any tips would be more than welcome.

You can drop a mail and then call up people. I have read that people do that more often, when calling and selling.
That way, the potential buyer either has some context or has something to refer to, after the call.

You are just wasting your time and will be called Spamming.

1. The person who pick up the phone will never be able to make a decision.
2. The person who can make a decision will never pick up the spam call.

True.
Unless you get an intro from someone, cold calling will always be spam and you need to do it at scale.
So it needs to be for a domain that has several potential buyers. Like GEOs. and It will still be SPAM.

You gotta have a call center operation to filter the cold colds into Warm leads, and then another set of calls to filter warm qualified leads, and then you make the closure calls.. Messy affair. Works, but messy.

This is generally true. Twenty years back, it might have been the right thing to do. Unless you were seen as extremely busy, you didn't need an appointment for a phone call. These days, the norm is to email first and ask permission to call.

Does anyone remember the scam that you would get an email asking you to ok the registration of a domain (different extension) some call it the "Chinese Domain Name Email Scam"?

I got a call like that a few weeks ago, they said the person is in their office now trying to buy the domains, but because I registered the name first (dot com) they must give me the option to buy it first, they warned me the other guy buys it my seo will be deleted.

I don't do outbound but in the past I called several companies to inquire about domains they owned and were not in use. I had sometimes succes and many other times no as the domain wasn't for sale or too expensive. Anyway almost everytime I was able to speak to the right person, this I think because I wanted to buy something from them and not sell something to them.

Calling for selling something I think is much differenIt. I would never do this personally.

Telephone outbound marketing has become very annoying. I dont care to reply to unknown numbers in my personal phone. But if you have a business number you have to reply to all calls, unfortunately. When someone starts the conversion with "I have to propose you..." I hang down immediately.

Who knows maybe I missed also some good domains at very good price, lol...
