I have a domain expiring today and when i place order to renew it and added to cart i find that i am obliged to buy privacy renewal also !!

i bought the domain with privacy added before , but since godaddy now offering basic free privacy why they force people to renew the previous privacy and that add cost on renewal !!

i turned off the privacy yesterday and turned off the auto renewal inorder to renew it manualy but in the
cart i found like in the below image and i tried to remove the privacy from the cart but unable !! the option
to delete it is disabled !!
Any solutions for this !!

Click the little waste basket or trashcan icon to the right, below the price, and privacy option will be removed.

😂 Good luck, Lovely4ever.

Had issues with the 'domain protection + privacy' earlier this year. It was unremovable at domain renewal. Kept putting the code emailed to me but the response was that I had put in the wrong code. Same for an unexpired domain.

Sent an email saying I didn't want it but had to pay for the 'domain protection'.

Got refunded later without asking.

If you're the current registrant and the name is in your account, then it's possible you had privacy already on the name, so it will likely renew the same way as the prior year.

Regardless, try going to Control Panel and choose Renewals & Billing. It should bring up a list of up and coming renewals for all your renewing products, including names, services, privacy, etc. Scroll down until you find the Privacy option for this specific name, which should be listed apart from the name itself. Click the box on the left, and click Cancel Renewal located at the top. Once it updates, it should allow renewal of your name without the privacy renewal option...IMO.

If you're having continued troubles it might be time to simply contact GD support for assistance...imo

Maybe this is my anti-Godaddy bias speaking but I have to wonder if they didnt make it difficult on purpose to encourage people to give up on canceling privacy and just pay for it....🤔

Yep, they want you to turn privacy off using the method above (both steps) but then, immediately, your info is available. I had hoped it would go into the partial privacy status rather than being fully visible. Because it goes to a 'full info' mode, I am doing as I have been doing for the last several years and I move the names away to a registrar that gives full privacy for free. I am not willing to chance my full info showing if I renew a name there.

I have not bothered contacting customer support as this is just business as usual I am afraid. I had hoped with someone new at the helm the little 'intricacies' around renewals would be squashed...I guess not. As a result of this issue, I've put my plans to move domains BACK to daddy on hold.

The easiest way to workaround the problem, transfer the domain out. Many registrars offer free privacy.

So do they still require you to remove the full privacy to transfer out?

Not sure it still works this way but we did find a workaround for that, to avoid publishing personal details especially any sensitive email address. Go into DomainsByProxy and change registrant details behind privacy to ones you are willing to publish. Then remove the full privacy from with DomainsByProxy - then the registrant details become public and you can transfer the domain out.

You might ask whether changing registrant details throws up Godaddy's notorious 60 day transfer lock as usual? No, certainly at that time doing it that way did not, presumably because what was appearing in the whois before and after the registrant change was just DomainsByProxy, so as far as GD was concerned there was no registrant change.

A lot of pointless hoops to jump through, no wonder people sued them over paid privacy.

Another solution would have been to renew the domain + privacy first.
Then refund the privacy through live chat.
Privacy can be refunded within 30 days of purchase.

At least in my case I have to...not sure if they have another method of doing so while keeping full privacy in tact. The two steps mentioned above are what I do...it happens so quickly when I transfer out (within minutes usually) I am not too concerned my info will become visible unless someone happens to check it in that time period.
