Are you going to be buying more hyphen .COM domains in late 2019?

Just sold sushi-man.com from an Epik SSL lander for $4200. This is one of Epik's O&O domains. I don't normally report sales but these days we are routinely asking for $10K+ for good hyphen .COM names and seeing sincere engagement.

The great gTLD experiment has been run. I now routinely sell even ccTLD registrants are upgrading from their ccTLD to .COM if they can afford it. I was late to acknowledge it but the risk-reward equation for speculators overwhelmingly favors .COM.

When it comes to hyphenated .COM, SEO is your friend. I recommend to use SSL landers but any SEO lander will probably do the trick to drive inquiries.

@frank-germany Must remember that if you see a 100 marks note on the ground you would walk past it as it is not 'worth the effort'. Oh sorry, you use that Euro thing now don't you.

let me quote Rick Schwartz:
"the domain doesn't cost you the $10 USD or so
it costs you $100 USD"

actually it is even more expensive
you need to pay yourself
and the taxes
and a lot of stuff

Let me quote reality, most people are not millionaires and they only pay tax on profits, so stop quoting rubbish.

didn't you just talk about the wonderful hundred dollar profit?

No, I talked about you being so up your own that you give the impression that you would walk past a 100 mark (OK Euro) note on the ground because it would have been too much effort to pick it up. But of course according to your supposed argument you would have to calculate the time spent bending down and back up, and of course YOUR time is so valuable it wouldn't be worth it. That is the impression you give out of yourself.

That is what I was saying.

its not about my time

you register 10 hyphenated domains

how many will sell?
for how long do you need to renew them?
in order to sell 1

on average
10 years

that makes them cost $100 dollars each
that's $1000 USD

now you sell one for $100 USD

Bingo

next you pay yourself
pay your bills
pay your taxes
( I need to pay VAT w/o making any profit )

and you believe that hyphens are a good invetment
why?
because Rob said so
and now you read of $100 - $200 sales

@frank-germany - Why not say 150 years? Why not include inflation, or lost interest, or the price of razors you would use in the time. LOL

Why would a domain have to be registered for 10 years if you are only going to sell it for $1000? I don't.

Oh, and by the way, have a look on this site at how many unhyphenated .com's go for a lot less than $100.

At least you should try to make sense with your arguments.

@frank-germany That I fully believe.

End of as far as I am concerned.

Looking at all of the hyphenated names in this thread and comparing with the straight run together, there is a high probability that the nonhyphenated equivalent will take the traffic. The buenos dias example above falls flat when the nonhyphenated buenosdias.com is introduced, for instance.

The arguments about how people write or understand is irrelevant. It is how the algorhythms of the search engines interpolate that matters. And nobody adds hyphens to their searches.

Did you hear flaired trousers are coming back into fashion (yet again)? So did I. But I don't see many people wearing them.

Don't be daft.

What I am saying is that 'internet-satellite' is how people would more commonly refer to such, that is all.

Internet satellite would refer to the satellite in space and is thus more limited by the potential end users. Satellite internet could mean the product (internet enabled by satellites) and thus could have bigger pool of providers interested and higher potential and value.

That one sentence is the most ridiculous thing I have read on this site. I think you would have done well at Yellow Pages, no doubt you would have been a star employee with beliefs like that.

Coming back lol...they never went away. The trendy hipsters just call them 'bootcut'.

Maybe, if I stick around on NP long enough I will come back into fashion.

Trying out an experiment here on NP.

I have listed a three word 2 hyphen domain name, State-of-California.com, in auction, whilst at the same time asking in the appraisal section for members to give valuations on the unhyphenated domain, StateOfCalifornia.com (I have asked both for reseller and end user valuations).

If (and yes I realise it is a very big 'IF') the threads are successful and both the hyphenated gets any bids and also there are a fair number of valuations given on the appraisal thread, then we will be able to directly compare at least domainer value for the domain one against the other. In other words we would have a piece of hard data to actually value hyphenated domains with even if it is in comparison of just reseller pricing.

So far only one valuation of the unhyphenated domain, '$5k', with the comment that he would hand reg it if it was available, but not a single $1 bid on the hyphenated domain. :xf.frown:

Perhaps the next few days hopefully will be more productive on both threads. We can hardly rely on just one valuation to assess a general valuation of the unhyphenated domain and then compare it against the lack of bids on the hyphenated. Patience is a virtue, and domaining requires a great deal of that virtue. LOL
