For all the beginners, I am no expert in this but there is some advice I can give you basis my interaction with a number of newbies and from my experience with domaining over a number of years.

When starting off, if you are investing in any extension other than .COM, you may be making a mistake. While some of you may get lucky once or twice and may later move to premium names from the return that you made from the lucky sale, others may have a hard time.

If you are spending your money in any extensions which can be classified as a new gTLD and paying $20 per name or more, when starting off, you should reconsider your options and try to invest in .COMs, while you understand the game.

If you are going for .live, .art or .something which is other than .COM (in some case, maybe .NET or .ORG or something that you really understand and get a hang of), do not invest.

It will get you tired and worked out pretty fast. It is very important to get the learning properly in the beginning for the journey to be shorter and profitable.

I struggled, you shouldn't!

Thanks for the generous piece of advice.. As a newbie, I've never even researched about any other gTLD apart from the King. I'll stick to that for now till i mature from the game.

How has it worked for you so far?

I guess I'm moving in the right direction when i register a (.com), submit to Squadhelp or brandbucket and they accept it. I'm still building my portfolio and prays for luck on sales so that I'll stop stressing myself for brainstorming and move to aftermarket.

I think a newbie could fluke a gTLD simply due to people without budget culling or popular type in on new extension as long as on the standard renewal. The better bet will be with a dot com but the more you read the better you are at knowing where there is a market.

I'd recommend to invest in your local market in the first place. Of course for Americans it would be .com, but everyone else should take a close look at what they have at home, it will most certainly be less saturated and maybe even a rising market with lots of opportunities. With 15 years experience in domaining, I find the .com market hard to grasp and hostile to newbies, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to any beginner, but ofc it's just me.

[edit] But I agree: steer clear of the "new gtlds" until you fully understand what they're about (and when you do, then probably even then).

Sure. But at the end of the day, also look at what was the yearly return. Coz what matters is either a good portfolio which can be converted into $ or money in your account that came from it.

Absolutely. Very important.

It depends. If your local market is not so great, go for some other market. Some markets really are not paying and it is better to target a different market then.
