is it a good idea to use a domain like the one mentioned above for a local business?
for example, will it be a good idea to buy the domain hotels.com.uk for a Hotel reviews websites based solely in the UK?

Thanks in advance.

Yes .. when specifically talking about the UK then ___.co.uk is still the extension people use most for local commerce.

Just be aware that there are location requirements for registering just about any ____.__.uk or _____.uk domains. Essentially you need to be a UK resident or have a business there. There are ways to get around it by paying extra for a proxy registration, but it's definitely something you should look into yourself.

Many countries have such restrictions like Canada (.ca) and the USA (.us).

When it comes to the ___.com.__ or ___.co.__ domains of different countries be very careful .. they are NOT all the same. Some are NOT even controlled by the country and could be private (like __.co.com was, although it wasn't a country code domain), so could be cancelled/stolen at any time.

So to answer your specific question about .uk domains, the answer is yes. But if you were just using that as a random example, then be warned that the answer is different for every country.

Just to make you aware that this is a common misconception. There are no restrictions on who can register .co.uk and .UK domains. Yippee!

Did that change at some point? Maybe with GDPR? I know i tried getting one a while back and had some pop-up or warning saying I needed a UK address.

Even Uniregistry still has ..

In order to register a new .co.uk domain name, the registrant must either reside in the UK or provide a UK address for service. P.O. boxes and their equivalent are not permitted. Nominet, the controlling registry for all .uk domain names, utilizes a data validation process that automatically attempts to validate the name and address data provided by registrants. If this data cannot be validated by Nominet, they will contact Uniregistry to undertake further validation activities (See section R3.37.2 of our TOS under the TLD specific terms as to how we will handle the requests).

Just tried grabbing one at GD and got ..

This domain has eligibility requirements. To continue, log in or complete this form.

I entered my Canadian address expecting to be rejected .. but it indeed did go to the final page of the checkout (I didn't buy it because I used fdsgfdgfdhds.co.uk as the test .. lol)

Well there you go .. just goes to show how you need to be careful about knowing the rules of each ccTLD! :)

Here's the rules of registration: https://media.nominet.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/22141819/dotUK-Rules-of-Registration.pdf and there's no mention of it in there.

When .UK was initially launched (after .CO.UK) it was restricted to UK residents, but I believe that they opened it up to everyone.

I'm really not sure why GD or Uniregistry mention anything to do with residence in the UK. Sure they verify that the details that you have are valid, but that is all.

It's not worth the reg fee in my opinion. No .me.uk is.

Very good. Where are you from and through which registrar? Did you get any residential requirements notices during the process?

I'm from India. I was going through expired domains & saw a nice CVCV .co.uk domain. That day cheapest one was dynadot for .co.uk, so I registered there. No additional document was asked. It was as simple & fast as .com.
