$13.56 cheapest .app renewal. (almost 2x com

This extension is owned by Google.

avoid ngtld until β€œpremium" renewals gone

Go ahead and try to register "electronic.app"
Save ur money, unless want pay $435.70 year

Hope sells for same price shop.app, right? ;)
They keep the best .app for themselves.

Not the right strategy because of 1 sale

Anything decent in that extension has been taken long time ago.

The next .mobi?

No I don't think .app is the next .mobi. Mobi is just an ugly extension. I can see why sites decided to simply use m.site.com as their mobile friendly version. There was no need to have an entire new extension for the mobile version. Many up and combing businesses, however, start off as solely an app and the developers and entrepreneurs behind those apps are young fresh blood who missed the .com grab of the 90s. I guess one downside though is that it's probably safer for businesses to have their NameApp.com for now until the public recognizes the different words that can occur to the right of the dot.

Thanks for asking I really love .app extension somehow as I think apps are the present things which rules us in mobile applications and may continue in future too for this reason I love them.

Not having much yet but soon will get them more but I would be very specific to certain niches or business only with app.

Top keywords are available in .app still but as samir pointed it out the renewals for premiums are not within my budget now but nevertheless there are still good names (Premiums) available to be had in .app.

The next .mobi?

I have to disagree here .mobi is no way near .app.

i agree that .app has alot of good keywords still available and is a good alternative to other tlds

plus if a .app domain i hold doesnt sell within a year i just dump it. .coms is the king but thats the past for me anyhow and alot of people look for new exts now

its worth a punt .

.app makes sense and is a cool ext imo

The shop/app sale is not a registry sale and the buyer is a large company Shopify. It shows that .app is demanded by large companies and domainers can buy premium .app domains for investment profit. Currently Namebio shows an average .app price of $8,929 and total 61 sales, which is quite impressive for a 2-year-old extension.

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) have started becoming the new trend in web and replacing apps, and .app is the only perfect extension for PWAs and indicates that a website is a web app and functions like an app. .App will be more popular and valuable when PWAs become more mature and common.

aren't the yearly renewal fees $2000 for shop.app? In cases of premium renewals (most of the good names it seems) the majority will be from the registry as this is just too much for most domainers

Yes, the .app domain has a yearly renewal fee of $2,000 and $12,500 EAP Day 1 registration fee.

I think the shop/app sale has already explained to you.

There are many wealthy domainers and investment companies in the world that can afford premium renewals and registration fees. Also, there are many premium .app domains that have much lower renewal fees than $2,000 for the less wealthy domainers.

It is encouraging to see now a number of 5-figure .app sales, as well as the 6-figure shop sale, and as I read the sales data almost all were domainer sales.

Is it a good investment? As with anything, the answer is, it depends. You need to look at the original cost and renewal cost, as well as try to estimate your probability of sale.
DomainProfitability.png

As pointed out above, on the basis of the 61 .app sales that are in NameBio, the average price is substantially higher than in .com, mainly indicate that the .apps that have sold are the high value ones that sold long ago in legacy extensions.

In terms of annual holding cost, if you can find a non-premium name that you think has a bright future, the wholesale renewal is $12, with some registrars offering retail not too much above that, versus $7.85 wholesale for .com currently.

What about probability of sale? Over the past year there are 46 NameBio listed .app sales (average price on those $9941) and using Dofo.com currently there are about 39,700 .app domain names listed for sale, suggesting an annual sell through rate of about 0.12%.

By comparison, when I looked at domain name sell-through rates, for .com the comparable apparent sell-through rate (just using NameBio listed sales) is 0.60%.

Of course the .app stats are small dataset, and these are NameBio only, missing sales at many venues, as well as including a mix of wholesale acquisitions and retail sales.

So it suggests that your odds of selling an .app in any one year compared to a .com is about 1/5 as likely, but the average price is likely to be higher by about the same factor, so this analysis does not allow you to conclude anything, perhaps! :xf.eek:

I agree that decentralized app developments may push further use for extension. People tend to have different views on Google, but in general I like what they have done with recent TLDs including .app.

Personally, if I can find a name I think has reasonable probability of sale, and standard renewal, I would not hesitate to invest in .app (although I have none right now myself).

Bob

PS I recently read @jmcc book Domnomics (see my NamePros review/summary), and in chapter 8 he suggests 7 factors to consider when investing in a TLD. On most of themm I feel relatively positive re .app. I find the average person on street has heard of it. There are some big name users. There is at least some record of aftermarket sales, including high value ones. I at least like the owners of the registry. He also mentions in book it takes time for an accurate picture to develop about a TLD, probably longer than .app has been around. For this reason, there is I think a bit higher risk in any newish TLD, because if you wait until the pattern is clear, investment opportunities at reasonable prices will be largely gone.

That's pretty close to the average of what .com names will go for in a few more years.

Not everybody can get the .com. So the .app is an ingenious extension. But you are right about the costs.

IF you want to build a really useful site (and specifically an App) then only get .APP domain.
If you are interested only in buying/selling domains then get premium, one-word, generic, dictionary name .APP - else don't waste money is acquiring crap.TLDs that sit with you for next 10 years!

I’ve had a few offers for Neobank.app

Still holding out to see what comes of the emerging competition for big banks.

I picked up a great 3L dictionary word .app name at auction last month, I am hoping for a run. It seems like a neat extension for a punt.
