The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Eversince at least one registrar started offering opennic 'tlds' I've read about multiple people getting suckered in.

Will Namepros continue to allow these names being offered alongside the real deal? Where do we draw the line? We have rules for IDN domains, how about alt TLDs?

https://www.techjunkie.com/how-to-get-free-opennic-domain-names/
These are the TLDs currently available through OpenNIC for free registration:
  • .bbs
  • .free
  • .fur
  • .geek
  • .gopher
  • .indy
  • .ing
  • .null
  • .oss
  • .micro
  • .parody
If you want to see one of these in action, I registered one myself: http://rich.geek. If you have OpenNIC’s DNS servers loaded in, that site will work.

The domain [rich.geek] that the author [nik] stated he registered [quoted above], appears to be available for reg at epik; assuming it wasn't renewed?

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but what year did .o launch? I don't see it mentioned in the above mentioned 2010 TechJunkie article.

Alt TLDs are designed to run across networks that support the Anonymize.com DNS resolver. The Anomyize.com DNS resolver can be accessed in three ways:
  • 1. The free Anonymize.com VPN
  • 2. The free Anonymize.com Secure DNS resolver
  • 3. Through partner APIs
For more information about Alt TLDs, or to partner with us, contact us at [email protected] and we will be happy to advise.

That is Epiks price list for the VPNs. It CLEARLY states what they are.

To have all these opennic domains work, install for Chrome or Firefox the addon for free from https://blockchain-dns.info/

Afterwards, you can type in your address bar for example: nx.bit/ and you will show the domain. The Anonymize stuff is just advertisement form Epik to buy that feature as well. I have received the same email from Epik when registering my .geek

Do not forget to add a trailing slash or http:// in front, or else Google Chrome will search google.

Really now do you know where other can be register ?

You can most likely register .o domains for free by simply emailing the TLD operator, as with most OpenNIC TLDs. It's a bit of a pain; you won't even be able to change your nameservers via a website. Everything has to be handled manually by the one person who runs the TLD. I assume Epik is essentially charging a convenience fee.

I believe .o is run by Jonah Aragon. The easiest way to reach them is probably the OpenNIC IRC channel. Jonah also pops into the OpenNIC Discord server from time to time, though I haven't seen him in a while.

Re: [opennic-discuss] Important: reg.for.free, and thus .geek and .indy signups unavailable

https://lists.opennicproject.org/sympa/arc/discuss/2016-12/msg00232.html

There's never really been a consistent, streamlined way to register or manage OpenNIC domains. Historically, it has essentially be run by enthusiasts, albeit in a relatively formal manner. I've always thought it was a cool project, but I think most participants never really expected it to see widespread use. It's cool to see mainstream registrars and investors taking an interest; just keep in mind that the usual caveats for such projects apply. Sometimes they take off--like Bitcoin did. Usually they don't.

Investing aside, OpenNIC is a cool project. Regardless of you opinions on alternative TLDs, it's worth reading more about them.

I agree. Seems to be more of a hobbyist/geek thing :). The tech is nice.

The question is though, should these 'domains' be allowed to be advertised over here as being domains? or should they have their own category or be categorised as services?

It's not like it's a new thing. opennic has been around for over a decade if I'm not mistaken.

Like you said, regardless of how you feel about them, I see people falling for the newly started hype here on NP and especially new members/domainers are vulnerable to this. I think as a community we have the obligation to be as transparent as possible about this.

Someone mentioned earlier he regged 29? 39? Domains without realizing what they are. Even at $2,99 a pop that's a fair amount of money wasted.

For a tech person, yes. It's clear. The less technically knowledgeable domainer? I doubt that's very clear.

When you search for domain.o you get the option to register it without any mention of it being an alt tld. No mention at checkout. Its just not right.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's ok that they offer them as they provide easy access to alts but it's confusing for the general public. List them under your VPN services or whatever but it's a totally different product offering. It shouldn't get treated as a domain registration.

but, in any reality - they are domains...... and if you have no technically knowledge - you shouldn't be a domainer until you gain some of the basics, such as research.... When i purchased my first .Coin & .Bit domains, the first thing i did was look them up. What this is, is a case of "Monkey see, monkey do" One guy bought and sold .Geek names here so others thought they could as well, so they ran to buy them all up, failing to RESEARCH. That is the "Domainers" fault.

And it says it in the most simple of terms (They are VPN domains) come on bro, the dumbest domainer should at least have some sort of sense to RESEARCH what a VPN domain is.

I agree to some extent. You should know what you're buying but the way it's advertised isn't right. Not entirely the registrars fault as you pointed out.

If I developed my own chrome plugin and let people register .web domains that can only be used by people running the plugin, would you call that a domain? I wouldn't. In essence that's what they're doing.

".o is Global Domain Name. A new generic extension that is for everyone, everywhere & everything. Whether you are a corporation or a small business, a student or a startup your online presence is your success. Your ideas matter because it can give you a global recognition. Don’t compromise on your domain name and get what you want to represent who you are."

I tried replacing the O in the url with NL and it's an identical page, so it looks like it's default place holder info and an oversight that these pages would not apply to openic names, they may not realize it's even a 1st page google result for .o domain name and if it's not linked internally on their site maybe google found it in a sitemap.
