Hello!!!

I've had a frustrating week...

Last week I sold my domain name on Sedo insurance.casino for $$$$ to Sriram Gopalan. He immediately wanted a receipt with my signature. (Red flags are going up.) I waited and waited and no payment...then I decided to do a name look up and I found my domain for sale on Dan.com with Sriram Gopalan listed as the owner. :rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage:
I contacted Sedo and they said that his cc was rejected due to security reasons. They would try a wire transfer and then cancel the escrow.

I CONTACTED DAN.COM
(See below)
Sriram Gopalan is selling insurance.casino on your site.

He bought the domain from me on Sedo over a week ago... but has yet to pay for it...so he should not be selling a domain name he does not own.
Their reply:

Thank you for notifying us.

Please grant a print screen of the domain residing in your registrars account and I will make sure to remove the domain for you.

What kind of security does DAN.COM use??? I guess anyone can sell a domain without verification??? Why am I on the hook to provide them with proof of ownership??? HEY DAN.COM - SHOULDN'T SRIRAM GOPALAM BE PROVING HIS OWNERSHIP OF THE DOMAIN???

PS Everyone...it is STILL UP FOR SALE!!!!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Mid 2018 I hand regged a domain and tried to list on Dan and found out someone else added it in their account. I informed them and they fixed quickly and moved the name to my account. It is very easy to fix.

Am I the only who finds this thread a joke and completely out of order?

The OP has slandered a company and a person without a shred of proof and this is acceptable?

This guy was the previous owner and failed to remove a listing, very annoying but not illegal.

He then failed to make a payment, very unprofessional, annoying and not cool

BUT calling him a scammer without proof is crossing a line and the OP needs to apologise and get this thread or her slanderous posts removed.....

Yes, Dan confirmed the listing is old. The previous owner seems to need the domain a lot since he was willing to pay 4400 for it. I believe @Mod Team Alfa @Mod Team Echo @Mod Team Bravo @Mod Team Foxtrot should fix this thread, the title and some of the contents.

Might have had a bid on another platform? Or a direct offer? Or just really like the name.....also considering the process with Sedo has not even been completed yet, who is to say the buyer will not pay via wire transfer?

Some people do not check their cc balances as regular as they should and are not the quickest of payers....

whatever the case may be hopefully the mods sort this thread out.....

It is possible he has a bigger sale waiting, could be at any place even.

Verysassyc,

To my surprise, I found a 4-page long thread on Namepros regarding a statement you have made which could have been solved within a matter of minutes.

It is easy to ramp on about this topic without providing a clear and factual picture. Please consider:
- we have our own verification methods at the moment of subscribing a domain
- the domain you are referring to was listed for sale by this particular seller in 2016
- we do not perform a continuous check of live ownership. If a domain expires the seller is responsible for removing the domain(s). Regardless, we are developing a live ownership verification ensuring this situation will not happen again
- the entire portfolio of this seller was listed in 2016 meaning it is likely part of the portfolio expired over time

Please bear in mind that we receive hundreds of inquiries on a daily basis. Amongst those inquiries we receive dozens of remarks stating a domain was stolen, illegally listed or not allowed to be listed for sale. In 90% of these cases, it involves a former owner who neglected to renew the domain and lost it through auction. You might understand that we cannot contact our sellers multiple times on a daily basis to verify these claims. If I was a seller on any platform I would not desire to be contacted regarding this frequently. However, we do not want to disregard your statement and ask you to send this print screen in order to get this resolved straight away.

It is unfortunate to see that something this simply resolves in such a large post with several unprofessional remarks. Regardless, our support will tend to your ticket this morning and make sure the domain gets removed as well as any other outdated listing of the seller.

Hey...to my surprise...I found my domain still for sale after I let you know....I guess we're even :)

"gaslighting" & "emotional woman"

Your phrases that you have used when people say something you don't agree with.......

You have accused someone of being a scammer without a shred of evidence......

Saying people have called you an "emotional woman" is a downright lie and accusing people of gaslighting when they disagree with you is also unacceptable .

Just stop with the baseless accusations

@Verysassyc we're sorry to hear about your experience, however, I would kindly like to ask you to not engage in defamatory actions against us for no good reason. The title of this thread is extremely inaccurate and negatively impacts all DAN users.

We've spent quite some time on building a solution to prevent problems like the one you've faced and are on the verge of introducing a new domain verification system that will ensure to avoid us promoting outdated inventory.

Having said that, no automated verification system will prevent internet users from adding domains that they might not own. Our own domain: DAN.COM is offered weekly on all major marketplaces because a prankster thinks that's funny.

What's important to know is how we handle these cases. We have a zero-tolerance policy against sellers that add domains which they don't own and since the seller is never paid out before they deliver a domain, no fraud can ever be conducted by someone that lists domains which he or she doesn't own anymore.

So, DAN should be the first to implement the following:
Require custom TXT record to be published in DNS in all relevant times, not only initially. Or, require the owner to use DAN dns servers. If the domain is no more using DAN dns servers, and there are no appropriate TXT records in 3rd party DNS, it should be instant;y removed from the markerplace. This would eliminate situations like the one we are discussing.
As for this thread - it contains a number of useful opinions on various subjects, so it might be good to edit it as appropriate - change the title, remove unnecesessary images etc. Not an easy task for the mods though...

They already know this. But of course for them is more easy to let people upload 1000 domains without any probe of ownership.
The Sedo way, that is uploading a TXT DNS record to probe domain ownership or use their DNS servers, is the proper and professional way to go. It's more time consuming, but at least they know they are listing for sale domains with probed ownership.
PS: They would not be the first. Sedo already requires this kind of verification to list domains at their platform, and has been requiring this from some time ago.

People just make every problem BIG and waiting for the opportunity to attack others.
Everything can be solved in a peaceful manner without posting here.
Contact the company/registrar/organization first before posting some accusations:
- Godaddy stole my name
- xyz member is a scammer, etc......

KEEP YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE down and You Will Live Longer.

Try to list a domain you don't own at Sedo.com, and let me know if you have success.
Sedo.com, and even Godaddy.com, are using TXT DNS record validation to validate domain ownership (Godaddy for domains not registered with them). And they have been doing this kind of verification already from some time ago.

By the way, a good implementation would mean that the rules are the same for all sellers. Even for big sellers. Afaik Sedo allows _some_ sellers to add domains without dns verification (I've seen hugedomains adding my domain to their sedo account a few times in a raw, even after I added it to my sedo acct. with appropriate dns record).
So, DAN should think of a better implementation:
- one rule for all
- apply it for existing domains as well, rechecking the things periodically

Maybe those domains were listed for sale by Hugedomains before you acquired them. Sedo still has domains listed for sale before they implemented the TXT DNS verification.
But once you upload the TXT record to your domains DNS, Sedo will delete the previous listing, and add your listing.
This has happened to me just 2 days ago. I uploaded the TXT record and sent a message to Sedo letting them know about it. In few hours, the previous domain listing was deleted, and my domain was added.

My case was exactly the same. Initially. After a few days, the domain disappeared. Was again listed by somebody else (hugedomains). Which means that hugedomains is (or, at least, was at some point of time) allowed to add stuff without dns verification to Sedo. Which is wrong.

WRONG!

@DAN.COM
Spelled out for you in black and white.

There are some scenarios where a TXT verification won't be sufficient. For example, DNS settings move when you transfer a domain. Having the verification txt record (knowingly or unknowingly) of another seller active for a recently purchased domain, will still cause issues.

Since you mention Sedo, it seems Undeveloped.com is listed for sale at Sedo:

We've mentioned this before. As long as human beings are involved in marketplaces, you will have inefficiencies.

You need to start with something. With (or, actually, without) whois in the current global picture - DNS remains the only source. So, you need to start with DNS. Also, and most importantly, for existing domains with periodical checks. I can imagine even more specific situations which should be taken into account, but it is not a technical thread about markerplace backend, so it would not be practical to go that deep here...

In this case, the new owner would have it very easy to change the TXT DNS records.
You cannot say this method is not sufficient, because it works in 99% of the cases.
I understand that for you is more easy to let people upload 1000 domains without verification, because it's a lot faster for the sellers.
But, this method is not professional in any way, having the TXT DNS record verification method available.
By doing this you let growing your domain listings very fast, but also you know that some buyers can pay for a domain not owned by your seller, and this won't give a good image to your company neither.
This is just what I think. Of course you will do what you think it's better for your business.

If I've to vote for system with or without verification, I'd go with what they're doing now. Love DAN for its simplicity and ease of doing business. And for issues like OP's, the Sriram dude looks like serious scammer and is an exception. May be they could remove/suspend such user instantly for at least few days or months or forever as penalty. My 2 cents.

You nailed it. This is why DAN is not too optimistic about implementing extra verifications. Which is understandable.

No it is not. It's sufficient. You as Marketplace Website needs to live check TXT all the time. Also you need ro check if NS server still the original. If NS server has changed, notify original user who addes the domains "Are you still listing your domain?". If in week no answers, drop from your list.

For registrar. If domain changes owenership and you see TXT for GoDaddy, Afternic, DAN, etc then asks new owner if they are aware of it. Keep them or delete them. Then live check from Marketplace website will drop next following days.

The one that stop you from doing this because you may want to keep offers coming to your table even if domains are not legit listing.
