I recently purchased a domain (.io) on Sedo. The seller has provided the auth code, so all good to go.

Initially attempted to transfer into GoDaddy, as I have done a million times before. However, GD's transfer tool simply wouldn't recognise the domain as being eligible for transfer. Nothing about it being locked or anything - just a simple message saying not eligible. Looked at whois records, and nothing in there would suggest any sort of problem (not changed registrars for years, status ok etc).

Then tried NameCheap - their systems report the domain as eligible for transfer. Enter auth code and proceed, but shortly after get an email saying transfer cancelled due to invalid auth code.

What's going on? If it was just the auth code I'd suspect just an error somewhere, but the fact GoDaddy won't even recognise the domain seems odd.

Have gone back to Sedo to query auth code.

When the domain was purchased? If it's less than 60 days old, it can't be transferred.

Hope @Paul Nicks can help you out.

Domain is about 10 years old. Hasn't moved registrar for years and neither has it transferred between owners at the same registrar.

Oh, okay, that's definitely not the case then...

I wonder whether it might be a registrar issue - the domain is with blacknight.com (never heard of them before) and many who is services seem not to be able to interrogate the domain's records.

hey @whenpillarsfall sounds like an issue with losing registrar. Not exactly my specialty, but if you email me the domain name and GD shopperID (paul at godaddy) I'll fwd to the right team to take a look.

As much as I like GoDaddy for the domains you can get cheap on auction/closeout, their entire platform is a bug filled disaster .. and it's unfortunately almost a certainty it simply spit out an incorrect or inaccurate error.

Are you sure about the accuracy of the auth code? Even if you properly copy/pasted it, it doesn't mean the seller necessarily did as well.

Also .. for the 60 day lock .. even if it didn't change ownership, if the owner changed certain parts of their WhoIs information, that can sometimes trigger a lock. Mind you, I wouldn't think the seller would be able to get an auth code if it was locked (honestly not sure about that, but it wouldn't make much sense).

Quick update. GoDaddy fixed the bug on their transfer tool, but sadly the auth code is still not valid. So at least I now know that for sure. Sedo are refusing to admit the auth code is wrong, so I am challenging them to transfer to their own account and then they can push to me.

I've bought loads of domains via Sedo and transferred, and never been an issue. Very frustrating.

Sedo have now admitted the auth code is wrong after trying it themselves.

Does that mean seller gave wrong Auth code?
Not sure at this point.

I have heard issues where auth codes become out of sync or expire, so who knows. Maybe the registrar has an issue. This whole transfer has been a bit of a pain.

Pain continues.

Got new auth code, and this one seems to be working. But in my GD account I have the previous transfer attempt also listed as failed. This seems to cause GDs website to get completely confused, and I am unable to get up to date info re the transfer. Support are unable to comprehend. The whois data shows pending transfer at least...
