Nobody writes about this, a complete write-up, beginning to end. Updated October 21st, 2019.
Shout out to NameCorp for publishing, & Alan Dunn for writing fine piece... Here’s a preview:

A man registered his family last name (Nissan.com) in 1994, for a company he started in 1980, when Nissan Motors was known as “DATSUN.” Years later, he is sued by the Nissan Motor Corporation, starting what would become almost two decades of legal arguments and maneuvers, even entering a request to the United States Supreme Court...

I never found an up-to-date compilation of this case, makes you want to root for the little guy

I don't think there is a domainer here that doesn't already know about this.

I've never understood why domainers are so fascinated by this story, which has zero relevance to domainers.

For a lot more about it, you can type "Nissan" into the search box on this page, and read any of the 142 posts about it here. Or the Wikipedia page. Or any of the many articles about the case:

Is your last name Nissan? No?

How about Coca-Cola? No?

Okay, so absent your last name being a well-known brand, how does this story affect you as a domainer?

Yes, Uzi spent a tremendous amount of time and energy, and also received quite a bit of uncompensated legal help fighting Nissan over Nissan.com. He got to keep it, and the site is pretty much a useless repository of information about the fight itself. At least he's not pretending to sell computers anymore.

He got nothing. Nissan Auto got nothing. Several of the lawyers got nothing. The only winners are some of the lawyers who got paid.

But, for some crazy reasons, domainers get worked up about this story every time it makes the rounds. I've never been able to figure out why, since this story has nothing to do with domaining, and the domain registrant didn't make a penny.
