Hi all.

I am holding a poll for what I should call my domain marketplace. The ideal name would be something like NameTraders.com or DomainDealer.com but my budget won’t stretch to something like that. So, I have the option of a number of similar names and while I realise hyphens are a no-no, I’m not exactly going to be advertising on the radio, so it doesn’t totally rule out those. I have thrown in a few that are purely brandable as well. You can vote for your top 2 names. Oh, and I’ll have some spare names available after this – PM me if interested. 😉

How do you know this, have you ask for the prices of these names?? (if they arent developed) Don't assume a name will be too expensive before asking, try not to settle for 2nd best when picking a name to develop.

I would try find a good brandable name rather than a hyphenated keyword name. Not too keen on the brandable names you have there....just my opinion though

None of the above.. Surely you can come up with something good available I know I could.

Yup - I agree. Find a good brandable name instead of a hyphenated keyword.

I was going to use RodeoDomains.com. I hand reg it years ago but decided to use other names instead.

It is available!

It's memorable, has personality, and could be a strong brand with all kinds of rodeo blurb material to use in ads and such.

Otherwise - I'd go with Namrs.com

If you do not have the budget to acquire a solid domain for your domain business I would suggest just listing in the various marketplaces. Who would pay $75 an hour for a personal trainer who is seriously out of shape and overweight? It is kind of difficult to make the argument that a business which already has a domain should pay $1500 to $5000 or more for a domain when you obviously were not willing to spend more than $10 for yours. Undoubtedly there are individuals in this forum which hold domains suitable for a domain reseller business. Perhaps an $xxx budget might convince someone to sell.

This is like the person who obsesses over their pen, paper, and writing tools who never writes a word, instead of simply writing every day.

What I'm trying to say is who cares what you call it when the names you have there won't sell. Learn to focus on improving the quality of your portfolio and get some better names. Get some good sales under your belt then worry about your "marketplace"

I like NicTraders and I think having an exact match to a NamePros username is a definite plus. Traders has a positive feel to me, and like the shortness of Nic. I don't like most of the brandable choices, but Namrs would be strong if you wanted to go that way. Best of luck whatever you choose!

I'de like to suggest, in addition to avoiding a hyphenated domain name for your site as mentioned above, avoid using a domain name that requires a pronunciation guide to communicate it's meaning,

Thanks Giles. I appreciate the input. I did ask about one of the names a while back and the owner has no intention of selling, ever. I'm not a huge fan of brandables for my own use. As you can see, I'd prefer a domain that just says what it is that I do.

None of the above.. Surely you can come up with something good available I know I could.
Well I guess I couldn't. But I think you can tell the sort of name I'd prefer - my preference is not for a brandable, but if the community here happened to love one listed above I might have been swayed.

I understand what you're saying garptrader, though for a domain name the beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. Just because you (and others) don't like what I might use for my own marketplace does not at all mean that I don't possess domains which are of value to others. I even hold other domains which would be highly suitable for a domaining business but they are just not ones that I want to use for myself. I also included some in this lit that I don't want to use - but they were there to make up the numbers and just on the off-chance people took a liking. The funny thing is - I see plenty of people on NP with marketplaces that I think have very poor names - but the name means something to them, and that's what matters really.

With respect barman, you have absolutely no idea about the quality of my portfolio, nor about my sales. I am conducting a poll on a possible name for my own marketplace, not looking for a critique on a portfolio which you've never seen. Not for one minute did I say these are valuable names. In fact I would never expect to sell a bunch of these names which I just hand-reg'd today for the purpose of the poll, as opposed to my portfolio which I intend to sell (and I very rarely hand reg for resale).

Thanks Bob. I reg'd it a couple of years back. My main concern with NicTraders is whether end users know what a 'Nic' is. A reasonable amount (though not all) know what a domain is, but a Nic - I'm not so sure. Oh, I also get really sick of people referring to me as Nic all the time. I reckon 90% of PM's I receive on here address me in that manner and that's just not my name! In any case I'd look to change my NP username to match whatever I choose for the marketplace.

It is interesting that people here assume I have rubbish domains because of the names in this poll. I am well aware of the quality (or lack thereof) of some of these names. I just wanted some feedback on people's preference from what was listed. Let's suppose a certain registrar held a poll when they were starting and said do you prefer CheapNames, CheapName or NameCheap - back then everyone would have said NameCheap is dreadful since it's just plain bad grammar. But because it's a brand that we are all familiar with most people now would say it's just fine. Often times the name gains meaning/value because of what you turn it into.

To be honest I wondered if your name was Nic :xf.cool:
I agree that most will not know NIC as meaning Network Information Center or what that is, but the idea of having a common first name makes sense - like I think DAN is a smart acronym for them. I had forgotten that it was easy to change your username here at NPs, and think a match makes sense. Most domain investors don't seem to indicate on their web pages that they are a NamePros member, I suppose that is because they don't want potential end users following this site, but nevertheless I think it is wise to use the same name for both.

To some degree I might make your site match the type of domain you plan to emphasize. So if that is made up word brandable, I would choose one of those. But if it is mainly two or three word com I would do that. Those who sell mainly new extensions should brand on one, in my humble opinion. Those who plan to sell mainly cute names should have one, while those who plan on only business sales for serious purposes should not.

Have a good day, Nic :-P (sorry could not resist)

Winning combination:

No hyphen.
5L pronounceable.
+ quality domain portfolio.

Good luck!

You're not willing to pay more than $10 for your brands domain name?

Hopefully you don't expect others to pay more than reg fee to acquire your names either.

Indeed Nic can stand for that (and a few other things) though I was actually thinking of it in terms of being short for nickname or internet handle. A handle is a name online, just as a domain name is a name online. Thus the thought behind it is that it still means NameTraders. But at the end of the day end users won't have any idea - it would just become a brand regardless.

Yeah that's a fair call. I mainly prefer 2 word domains and own a fair few, thus the 2-word style sort of works for my marketplace name. Though I have heaps of other stuff like brandable 5L.com's so it's not the be-all and end-all.

Thanks Mr Eagles. Hope you have a nice day too. ;) (Sorry, it's the best I could do!)

Of the selections, my vote went to "TheNameTraders.com"

My second choice would be "branding myself" (forum name)..

Of, course, the toughest part would be developing traffic..

Yeah, for sure. I don't expect to get piles of traffic. Names will be in the major marketplaces anyway. It's more just a presence and a central repository for all my names which I can link to from a couple of other sites.

..and what was the name of your marketing site again? 😉
It is an astute comment @hawkeye (y) . I often don't take my own advice :xf.eek:

Not wanting to send this off topic, but to briefly respond. To the degree possible I have tried to integrate both my real identity and the most important thing I focus on in selling domain names (domain names that serve as phrases so match across the dot effectively). I chose a website name that is a phrase, but on my website first page I have (at bottom as well as on the contact and about pages) who I am including my NamePros handle. On NamePros signature I have the link to my site, and on social media I have both my name (the one I use on NamePros) and also a link to my site. To the degree possible I have tried to have an integrated personal brand.

I am a big believer in tiny businesses using a domain name that gives an idea of what it is that you do. That is why I never considered for example using my name as my domain site. That said, I am also a big believer in transparency and openness, so do clearly state that it is a one person site and who I am.

If I was starting over I probably would have made a different choice (a one word match across the dot) but at this point I have no intentions to rebrand. It has taken awhile to gradually build traffic and search ranking and don't want to do anything to negatively impact that.

But it is a clever comment, and thank you. By the way I might have taken your username if you had not had it long before I joined NamePros!

Have a nice day everyone.

Bob

There are some other options out there if you wait. I had these 2 GoDaddy expiring names in my newsletter today:

IncredibleDomain.com
OptimumNames.com (sold at 10am)

I probably see 1-2 decent domain portfolio domains come through in the expired lists each month. It was an anomaly to see 2 in 1 day.

I went to the bottom of the thread without reading others posts as to avoid any influence...my choice from those offered would be: Name Nirvana / / com

I too am looking to decide a name for my marketplace and may borrow your idea and run a poll. I'm getting disillusioned with parking (low click thru rate and revenue reduction) and may just have to build a simple site to allow for contact/offers. Commissions have become ridiculous on some platforms so it's time to start kicking them to the curb. Best of luck with your choice!

Why not ask how much they want for DomainDealer.com, its for sale.

Yeah, I may wait. I'm not in a hurry specifically. Just got to do it sometime and have been sitting on it for a year or so. At some stage you just have to make it happen (something I'm not always good at)!

Thanks. Yeah, I think a poll is a good way, though you need to be prepared for a bunch of people to add their critique as well. Next time I would ask the question differently. The fact is I know that some of those names are pretty much garbage (eg. I knew the hyphens would not go down well) but I wanted to test a theory. I'll share that later. So far the results have been interesting.

Why not ask how much they want for DomainDealer.com, its for sale.
Yeah, I will. I guess I'm just used to domainers expecting to get xx,xxx for every domain they own - and that's not a figure I'm prepared to pay.

I'd be interested to know if people are voting for NicTraders because they like the name or just because it matches my forum username...

It had my vote because I think it looks and sounds best of the bunch, from what you provided. Looks professional, has a personal touch, and flows nicely when spoken.

That being said, it is a different kind of name, and from seeing you on the forum has made it more recognizable, so that probably played a part. Also you mentioned the portfolio name being a central, accessible hub for all your domains while 3rd party marketplaces being the main source of sales, so why not take a leap into something less generic?

I really connected with your comment
Often times the name gains meaning/value because of what you turn it into
because this is an aspect that is often overlooked when building a portfolio site, where the focus is on the amount of dollars we go and spend on a single aftermarket name domain. Its easy to spend money, doesn't take much brains to do that. But creating your own solution and turning it into something memorable is commendable.
