First, GD is my favorite registrar so far.

Second, they do have bunch of bugs and the fact that they don't go away for months and years while new ones pop up regularly just baffles me.

Anyway, in this thread I will be posting the issues I am having and hopefully with the help of the magnificent @Joe Styler something starts happening.

So, the fresh one:

For about one week now, in the GD new interface, I select certain sorting of the names (let's say by appraised value) and it shows me first 500 names, then if I click the arrow for the next page, it gives me the rotating circle saying "loading" that won't go away for hours (yes, I have tested, while doing something else).

What worries me is that the new interface will become the only one, while it still lacks most of the functionality of the old one, but that is another thing for now.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

It would appear that is only possible for 12 days after the expiry date because it says during the grace period, and implies that is 30 days:
If your domain name has expired, you can still transfer it to another registrar during the renewal grace period.

If your expired domain has Private Registration enabled, you will not be able to transfer it. Privacy cannot be removed from an expired domain.

You must complete the transfer during its grace period before the domain name falls into "redemption," which is when the domain name begins its transfer back to the registry for someone else to register it. The length of the grace period differs by domain name extension. Most general top-level domain name extensions (gTLDs) like .com and .net have a 30-day grace period between expiration and redemption.

But an email from GD about an expired domain says the grace period is now just 12 days:
If you do not renew your domain(s) during the 12-day Renewal Grace Period, you
will incur a fee of $80.00 USD in addition to the domain renewal fee.

It appears that GD no more allows expired domain transfers (and maybe renewals with or without $80 fee) if the domain received a bid on expired auctions. Which is logical. Earlier, some folks were trying to obtain domains cheaper, so, even with limited whois, they emailed all known (as per historical whois) emails trying to contact the owner - I experienced this myself (one of my buyers allowed his domain to expire, the domain appeared on GD auctions and, since my email was admin contact at some point of time, I received a number of solicitations to sell this domain *which I no more owned for a long time* right after if was shown on expired auctions with active bidding).
I am unsure is it currently possible to renew or transferaway expired GD domain in other cases (no auction bids, not purchased as closeout).

GD give the various time periods that apply here:
https://uk.godaddy.com/help/renewing-my-expired-domain-name-609

It contradicts what the GD email I quoted above says. That email said 12 days, GD website says19 after expiry until redemption fee ($80) applies for renewing at GD:

Day 19 Domain remains on hold but becomes subject to redemption fee. DNS is interrupted.

and:
Day 26 Domain is put up for domain name auction. You can manually recover your expired domain name or place a bid on the domain name through auction.
Day 30 Domain is no longer available to renew or recover in your account. You can place a bid on the domain name through auction.

So in the first four days of the auction you can still renew the domain, but the somewhat contradictory GD info supplied implies you cannot transfer it after day 12 or day 19 after expiry.

If they gave us privacy (which, for those of you that may not know costs them nothing)
Being the largest registrar they make tons of money with private registration.
But for those with Discount club, they could make an exception and give us free privacy.
@Joe Styler you guys really could.

The various dates people are referring to are for different reasons and are correct. But different things happen on the dates, like, you get charged more to renew, or the DNS is locked and changed to alert the domain owner that he domain expired, etc.

Bottom line is the emails all say if you don't renew your domain you will lose it after it expires. All the other things we put out there are various other things that happen post expiration.

As far as the time frame, well that varies by tld but for .com, and most other domains, you have up to 30 days to renew it. You can renew it without additional cost up to day 19 post expiration.

You can transfer it out until day 30, follow the link I posted above for the help article on how to do this.

Joe - wouldn't it make sense to renew up to day 30 without $80 fee to retain customers? Rather than push your customers to another registrar, where they can pay $8 - $10 for the transfer?

Ok thanks. This could be cleared up for all users by just amending the terminology to read "renewal grace period" and "transfer grace period" as they are do different things and have different values.

Yesterday I posted about declined terms for transfers not being concrete enough, see #109. So the following discussion moved around time limits and could not solve my problem.

In the old domain management you could go into "Expired Domains" and transfer out names in the status "Expired - Recoverable", if you had the relevant authcodes offline because Godaddy would no more send them. You had to unlock the domain as always when transfering which was possible.

In the new domain domain management you can no more unlock recoverable domains and so no more transfer them out. It does seem as if you could unlock, but if you try you receive an error message "There was an error processing your request ...". Bug or intent?

Well, if I remember correctly! But I did so several times just to save some money avoiding their $80 recover fees. Can members confirm my description?

I forget the exact number because it's been a while but it is something like an extremely small number of people who renew later than 7 days after expiration, and it tapers down from there as well even smaller. Most people who want to keep their domain renew before there is any redemption fee added.

In the new view there is a bug when doing it in bulk. That is being fixed soon. You can do it for one domain.

Joe, There's always a "bug"...Have you realized this yet?

Do you understand that other registrars don't have these "bugs", like Godaddy does?

Godaddy chat has been offline for 24 hours
https://www.godaddy.com/help/contact-us
It says it is available there 24/7 but always just says "Chat Loading" even if you refresh the page, try later, try different browser.

New bug with transfers. Normally you can complete a transfer out in under 15 minutes by following these GD instructions https://uk.godaddy.com/help/accept-or-decline-a-transfer-away-from-godaddy-6040
But now after doing that it just says "Your transfer is pending." Then next day you get an email to the registrant email address saying transfer will take place in five days, if you want to speed it up please reply to this email. Bizarre, not working as usual or as described in GD's instructions.

Some domains that are flagged as high risk are pulled manually to be checked. We have a pretty robust system in place to stop theft. Something on this transfer must have triggered that. You can reply and they will release it right away.
I'll look into the chat being down, where were trying to access it from?

@Joe Styler

First, thank you for your continued support for the issues the community is having.

Second, I still cannot reverse sort my domains by expiration date. It just does the permanent wheel circling.

I cannot sort by listed for sale... It becomes nightmare to look through which names are not listed, when you have 3100 names. When I try to go page by page, and select some, I spend hours doing it and when I try to list on marketplace after this, then it just gives me error message.

And, for names that were 3-4 days late and were already taken from Afternic (by the way, afternic does this only to GD names and not to other registrars), relisting after renewal gives "compliance error" that stays like that forever.

As a part of normal daily activities, I have to peform both transfer-ins and transfer-outs.
I saw this extra verification in 1Q 2018. Each and every transferaway was flagged, but promptly processed after I responded to a separate email. To the best of my knowledge, there was nothing special - those were not "million dollar" domains, I did not have failed logins, or lost password requests etc. At some point of time in 2019, all returned to normal - no emails, just online transfer acceptance - so the transfers were almost instant. Now, something is changed again. Requested a transfer on Friday. Approved it as usual. Still pending. Extra email received on Sunday (+2 days). Responded immediately. Domain released earlier today.

... where I noticed another bug. In pending transfers out section, it showed domain creation date in "Date Initiated" column.

Saw that too, on all "flagged" domains. I have never had this "flag" problem before and am using 2FA so it baffles me that I have such a delay in transferring out my own domains.

On Aug 13th I PMed a message with a screenshot about this issue to Joe.

They still seem to work on it.

The first one about reverse sorting by expiration date should be released in the next week or so, the development work was completed on it.

The sorting by which names are listed is more complex because of where that data lives but there is a ticket for it with the developers. In the meantime they are also working on adding that to the exportable list option so there is a way to see that data until the other fix takes place. We also discussed them adding in a for sale price in the export that shows what you listed the domain name for sale at if it is listed.

This would allow you to with a few quick clicks to get everything sorted as you want it. You could also copy and paste the data onto a spreadsheet from Afternic.com and upload it there with any updates you wanted to make to the listings in bulk. You could also reconcile the listings that way by comparing the lists.

Either way you will be able to sort by both, (and the rest of the columns on there), but the expiration date one will be the soonest.

On the removal from AN names that is the first I heard of it giving an compliance error. I will check into that. I also can set you up with someone who can do those things for you on the back end if you get stuck with it a lot so you don't have to worry about the error. Just PM me and I will have someone reach out.

That is not a bug that is a feature :) There are some domain transfers that trigger a manual look before the domain is released. Over the years we have caught some high value domains this way that were attempted thefts.
It is a small percentage of domains that trigger this which is why you have probably not noticed it before. We have had this in place for years. The last I checked, since we implemented this (knock on wood) we have not had a domain that was compromised leave GoDaddy which makes returning it to the rightful owner an easy task. Recovering a domain once it goes to another registrar is certainly possible but often time consuming and costly for the original registrant and may involve going to a court.
It is just another layer of security we offer our customers. Even with 2fa if you have a 7 figure name thieves can find ways to convince the phone provider to port your phone number to them, etc.
We try and strike a balance between ease of use and protecting our customers and we have iterated on this over the time it has been in use to help reduce the overall time frame we hold domains up for and the amount of false positives we generate. We don't want to stop anyone from moving a domain or make it hard for them, but we also don't want anyone to have their domain names stolen. It is a balance.

We have a ticket in on this with the developers.

Hi Joe thanks for the info, and I guess I should feel flattered that a few unloved domains bought at closeouts were valued highly enough by GD to trigger a security alert on exiting.

But communication could be improved here and save time and money when this happens by a) saying right away what is happening and b) explaining, as you have, that it is intended to protect the customer. Otherwise we are left in the dark and end up contacting support or believing the bugs are multiplying even more.

I went to pay for an expired auction and it wouldn't let me add it to the basket. Tried this on 2 different devices, 4 different browsers. The basket was simply empty every time it redirected to the checkout.
