Huge News here:

ICANN has switched around its line up of emergency registry providers, swapping out CORE Association for CIRA.

The organization last night announced that its three newly contracted Emergency Back-End Registry Operators are Nominet, CNNIC, and CIRA.

EBEROs are failsafe registries that will take over any gTLD that has failed or is on the verge of failing outright, putting its customers domains at risk.

The EBERO is responsible for winding down these gTLDs in an orderly fashion, giving registrants the chance to migrate to a different TLD.

That should satisfy a lot of people around the world because like Switzerland Canada is pretty neutral.

Not sure if aquire is the right term, I think they just host it until all the decisions of what to do are made.
So basically an emergency backup from a neutral country.

This could be big news for the Neutrality of Canada.
As more countries are looking for a neutral place to put servers Canada might just be the ideal place for some companies.

Like MapleDots already said, CIRA would not really acquire the failed registry, but rather get paid by ICANN to continue to operate it.

Interesting news - thanks for drawing it to our attention. CIRA already operate at least one other (.kiwi) registry backend so clearly feel they can secure economies from using their technology more broadly.

I believe it is true that so far EBERO has only needed to be enacted once, at least for a new gTLD, and that was for the unusual case of .wed who went to market with no major registrars handling it, had a crazy third year pricing, and after never reaching 400 regs surprisingly (not) had operating issues. The fact they were competing with two other wedding extensions did not help.

Yep, the pricing of .wed domains was structured in such a way that people were discouraged from keeping their domains for more than two years or so and then they were supposed to move to a sub domain. The founder was from outside the domain industry.
