information .Loan loses 1 million registrations in ~4 months of 2019 dropping to #4 among ntlds

Cheap promo registrations have fueled the rise of many new extensions but when the renewal rates are much higher, there tends to be a pullback in registration volume. Several registrars do seem to be currently offering initial .Loan registrations under $5 but for whatever reason .Loan buyers seem fatigued. With the loss of about one million registrations since January 2019, .Loan falls from a solid #3 ranking down to #4. At the current rate of decline, .Loan may fall a couple more spots in the coming weeks to #6. Source Namestat.org

Jan 15, 2019 - 2,170,517 registrations
May 13, 2019 - 1,126,804 registrations

Hahaha... I think it's normally that .Loan loses 1 Million registrations because Loan is not something too much good :)

I can think of several combinations which make sense and could potentially be used for promoting a business...

Home.Loan
Auto.Loan
Student.Loan
Boat.Loan
Car.Loan
Business.loan
Personal.loan

I guess as well any bank with operations in an English-speaking country could register their trademark + .Loan as brand protection even if they do not use it...

Chase.Loan
WellsFargo.Loan
CItigroup.Loan
etc

but I do not quite understand where a million plus registrations would come from.

Probably most of the new TLD's are owned by domain speculators, it's not hard to see why a decline like this would be.

There are only so many companies specialized in loans. Now take the total amount of .loan registrations and divide by the number of companies offering loans.

Unless you go super premium as specified in your post the rest of the domains are pretty well worthless. That goes for almost all of the new TLD's. You either go super premium one words or you go home. There is no money to be made on non premiums.

So most of the new TLD's being similar one only has to figure out how many super premium words there are in the english language and the writing is on the wall, you generally won't go higher.

Then we have not even addresses the language barrier... why the heck would someone in Germany want an English extension?

There are so many reasons not to invest overly heavy into the new TLD's it's not even funny.
Dabble, sure but don't use it as your main income group.

At least another million to go. Most of the ex-Famous Four NGTs went to full wholesale fee last year (new registry operation decided to clean house) and new registrations and renewals collapsed. This is a massive Junk Dump of heavily discounted registrations. There are some real on-topic sites in the .LOAN NGT.

A month later and now .LOAN is down to about 802k registrations dropping to number 8 among the newer extensions. Any guess where .LOAN is headed by the end of 2019?

It was a bad idea by the registry to provide an unsecured .loan

A lot of these new (or old) extensions sound good in combination with certain words but not many are selling well. Certainly none is selling as well as dot com.

It will be lucky to come out with around 20K registrations. The biggest drops are going to happen over the next six months.

So if an extension can lose 2 million registrations or more than 90% of its registration base in seven months, which new tld is next?

This is part of a clean-out of the ex Famous Four NGTs. Famous Four Media was replaced last year and the new management increased the wholesale registration fee on the TLDs. Most of these registrations were heavily discounted and were not going to renew.

There are some other NGTs which have also used heavy discounting to drive registration volume and they too will lose a lot of these registrations when they come up for renewal.

For some reason there was a huge influx out of China on this extension, I never understood why?

They weren't developed websites. The majority were either adult affiliate sites or gambling affiliate sites. There was very little real development activity in the NGT. That kind of templated content depends on cheap or nearly free registration fees. PPC parking happens but a lot of heavily discounted Chinese registrations appear as gambling (lottery, poker, casino and sports betting) affiliate sites. What is amazing is the availability of web development software that scrapes blogs, search engines and other sites to generate thousands of these landers at a time. I don't speak or read any Chinese but I had to learn the terms and characters for writing web usage measurement parsers. The Chinese NGTs are a completely different landscape to Western dominated NGTs.

There was a time many extensions were announcing multi million dollar PR deals out of China like .club, .link etc, no way those deals stood up. .wine was another one that had a lot of China based registrants.

Don't think that .WINE ever had that kind of Chinese registration volume. It also was quite expensive from what I remember. XYZ kicked off the discounting in the NGTs but others took it up without quite the same success. The .PARTY and .SCIENCE were the first major examples of the boom and bust of discounting. Basically the original business models did not work after XYZ had shown the way, the others followed.

Per Namestat, .Loan just dropped under 100 thousand registrations- a loss of more than 95% of its registration base in January 2019. Which "new" tld is next?

All the ex-Famous Four NGTs are losing registration volume. The latest web usage survey for .LOAN (August 2019) shows it at approximately 0.25% content. There are more deletions in .LOAN to come.
